Education makes one a real human being: Mamata Banerjee
Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the new campus of St Xavier’s University today. She gave a speech after the inauguration.
Salient points from her speech:
I believe this university would prove itself to be number one in the future.
I believe in dreams – without dreams one cannot afford to survive.
The standard of education at St Xavier’s is very high. We have given 70 acres to this university. I attend their programmes every year.
During the last six years, we have set up 17 universities and 47 colleges, as a result of which the number of seats in institutions of higher education have increased by 4.5 lakh.
We have also set up 6,000 schools, 300 industrial training institutes (ITIs), polytechnic colleges and medical colleges.
We are proud of our Kanyashree girls. This scheme has bagged the first prize at the United Nations Public Forum Awards recently. As a result of Kanyashree, the number girl students leaving schools midway and child marriages have come down.
We have started scholarship schemes like Shikshashree, Yuvashree and Vivekananda Merit Scholarship, meant for all categories, including OBC and general.
I feel people are known by the education that they acquire; education makes one a real human being. Minority institutions have a very vital and important role. Christian institutions, Ramakrishna Mission are known for the quality of learning and education that they impart.
All missionary schools and colleges, including St Xavier’s, provide good education. We are for all those who believe in human values. I believe, in three to four years, St Xavier’s would be able to compete with institutions like Harvard and Oxford.
শিক্ষা মানুষকে মানুষ তৈরী করে: মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়
আজ সেন্ট জেভিয়ার্স কলেজের নতুন ক্যাম্পাসের উদ্বোধন করলেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। এদিনের অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখার সময় তিনি বলেন, তাঁর বিশ্বাস এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় আগামী দিনে নিজেদের ১ নম্বর প্রমাণ করবে।
তাঁর বক্তব্যের কিছু বিষয়ঃ
আমি স্বপ্ন দেখতে ভালোবাসি, স্বপ্ন ছাড়া মানুষ বাঁচতে পারে না।
সেন্ট জেভিয়ার্স এর পড়ানোর স্ট্যান্ডার্ড খুব ভালো। আমরা এই বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়কে ৭০ একর জমি দিয়েছি। আমি প্রতি বছর এদের অনুষ্ঠানে আসি।
আমরা গত ৬ বছরে ১৭ টি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় করেছি। গত ৬ বছরে ৪৭ টি নতুন কলেজ, ৬০০০ নতুন স্কুল, ৩০০ আই টি আই ছাড়াও অনেকগুলি পলিটেকনিক কলেজ, মেডিকেল কলেজ তৈরী হয়েছে।
‘কন্যাশ্রী’ মেয়েদের জন্য আমরা গর্বিত। UN এ ১ নম্বর হয়েছে বাংলার কন্যাশ্রী। মেয়েদের স্কুল ছুটের হার, বাল্যবিবাহের হার কমে গেছে।
সংখ্যালঘু এবং সাধারণ ছাত্রছাত্রী সকলের জন্য শিক্ষাশ্রী, যুবশ্রী, বিবেকানন্দ মেরিট স্কলারশিপ সহ আরও অনেক স্কলারশিপ চালু করা হয়েছে।
আমি মনে করি একটা জাতি বেঁচে থাকে তার শিক্ষার জন্য, শিক্ষা মানুষকে মানুষ তৈরী করে। সব খ্রিষ্টান স্কুল, কলেজ, মিশনারিজ ওরা আমাদের ভালো শিক্ষা দেয়। রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন আমাদের ভালো শিক্ষা দেয়।
যারা মানুষ তৈরী করে তাদের জন্য আমরা আছি, থাকব। আমি বিশ্বাস করি ৩-৪ বছরের মধ্যে সেন্ট জেভিয়ার্স বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় হার্ভার্ড, অক্সফোর্ড এর সঙ্গে প্রতিযোগিতা করবে।
