Bengal Govt’s fourth open-air correctional home coming up in Medinipur
The Bengal Government has decided to set up the state’s fourth open-air correctional home beside the Medinipur Correctional Home. The three existing are in Lalgola, Raiganj and Durgapur.
Initially, 50 inmates will be kept at the two-storied correctional home. Each room will house two to three people. Eleven people are being hired to look after the place. The three open correctional homes currently house 200 inmates in all; the latest one would add another 50 initially.
According to the Minister for Correctional Administration, moving inmates to open correctional homes is part of the reforms process. Staying there increases their chances of getting reformed and being able to lead a good life after release. Another essential aspect of the reforms process is for inmates to be able to stay with their families, which would be allowed at the open-air correctional home later on.
The Bengal Government puts in a lot of efforts towards the welfare of correctional home inmates. From organising cultural programmes and allowing inmates to perform outside for the general public to teaching them to make items of handicrafts and other things like sanitary napkins to organising food festivals, the reforms process has been a big hit among the inmates.

রাজ্যে চতুর্থ ‘মুক্ত সংশোধনাগার’ মেদিনীপুরে
রাজ্যে আরও একটি মুক্ত সংশোধনাগার গড়ার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে রাজ্যের কারা দফতর। সেটি তৈরি হচ্ছে মেদিনীপুর সেন্ট্রাল জেলের পাশেই। রাজ্য মন্ত্রিসভার ৮ সেপ্টেম্বরের বৈঠকে এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে। আগে তিনটি মুক্ত সংশোধনাগার খোলা হয়েছে লালগোলা, রায়গঞ্জ ও দুর্গাপুরে, সেখানে বন্দিদের সংখ্যা প্রায় ২০০।
কারা দফতর সূত্রের খবর, নতুন মুক্ত সংশোধনাগারে প্রথম দিকে ৫০ জন বন্দি থাকবেন। বাড়িটি হবে দোতলা। এক-একটি ঘরে দু’তিন জন থাকবেন। এটি দেখভালের জন্য ১১ জন কর্মী নিয়োগ করা হচ্ছে।
মুক্ত সংশোধনাগার কি?
‘মুক্ত জেলে বন্দিদের বন্দিদশা অনেকটাই চলে যায়, সাধারণ জেলের বন্দিরা বাইরে যাওয়ার সুযোগ পান না। মুক্ত জেলের আবাসিকেরা চাইলে জেলের বাইরে কাজে যেতে পারেন। তবে সন্ধ্যা ৬টার মধ্যে তাঁদের জেলে ফিরে আসতে হয়।
সাধারণ জেলে নতুন ও পুরনো সব বন্দিই থাকেন। কিন্তু ১৫ বছর ধরে জেলে থাকলে তবেই মুক্ত সংশোধনাগারে থাকার অনুমতি পাওয়া যায়। সাধারণ জেলে বন্দিরা কোনও নিকটজনকে সঙ্গে নিতে পারেন না। অনেক মুক্ত জেলেই পরিবার নিয়ে থাকার সুযোগ দেওয়া হয় আবাসিকদের।
মুক্ত সংশোধনাগারে থাকার সুযোগ পেলে তবেই হাতের কাজ করে উপার্জন করা যায়। অনেক বন্দি হাতের কাজ গান, ছবি আঁকা, নাটকে শিখছেন। মুক্ত জেল সংশোধন প্রক্রিয়ারই একটি অঙ্গ। যত বেশি মুক্ত জেল তৈরি হবে, বন্দিদের সংশোধিত হয়ে ওঠার সুযোগ তত বাড়বে।
