2017 Monsoon Session in Parliament: Trinamool actively involved in discussions on burning issues

The first week of the 2017 Monsoon Session of Parliament began with Derek O’Brien raising the issue of letting the 12 Notices given by the Opposition parties be allowed in. Since the issues were ones crucial to the country, like cow vigilantism, farmers’ suicides, etc., they needed to be discussed.
The second week of the 2017 Monsoon Session was marked by Trinamool Congress raising the issue of mob lynching across the country and the flood situation in the eastern region, including in Bengal, and the Centre’s repeated ignoring of requests for the dredging of the reservoirs of dams under the DVC because siltation has reduced the holding capacities of the dams. On July 27, there was a protest by MPs of Trinamool Congress, Congress and DMK against the nationwide NEET examination, as it is against the federal nature of the country.
During the third week, the party raised the issue of the gradual removal of subsidy and thus hiking of LPG price. On July 31, the Opposition, of which Trinamool is a crucial component, voted for and got passed an important amendment in The National Commission for Backward Classes (Repeal) Bill, 2017 – the commission should be a five-member body, of which one backward class representative should be woman and another, a person from a minority community.
The fourth week was marked by the party putting its views forward during discussion on the 75th anniversary of the Quit India Movement. Derek O’Brien gave farewell speeches for the Honourable Chairman of the Rajya Sabha and for three retiring members of the Rajya Sabha. On the last day of the Monsoon Session, Derek O’Brien spoke during the welcome of the new Honourable Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.
Several other important issues were also raised by the MPs in both Houses of Parliament.
