IIM students make a beeline for internship with Trinamool
IIM Calcutta students, Hariharan and Mansha Tandon from the Class of 2011, were chosen to do internship with All India Trinamool Congress before the 2011 state Assembly Election. Three years later, 31 students of IIM Calcutta aspire to be in the party`s Lok Sabha war room ahead of a boardroom. Two students will be chosen to intern with Trinamool in the election year and be a part of a unique learning process.
Trinamool Congress had specified that it wanted candidates from the second-year batch, but that didn`t deter 17 first-year students from applying for the two slots. The remaining 14 applicants automatically made it to the shortlist.
Trinamool Congress Rajya Sabha Chief Whip Mr. Derek O`Brien had announced the internship opportunity while delivering a lecture on leadership at Intaglio 2014, IIM Calcutta`s annual international B-school summit. At the end of the session, Mr. O`Brien was swamped by students eager to grab the chance.
The 14 shortlisted applicants would need to sit for a group discussion conducted by five core members of the party and then appear for a personal interview. The internship will be during the months of April and May, just before the students take up jobs.
“The interns will work on implementing the communication strategy of the party, which has already been drawn up,” Mr. O`Brien said. “We are humbled by the response and we hope to include more people from other institutes to strengthen the backroom operations of the party. We want to give them the opportunity to be a part of the festival of democracy in this country.”

প্রথমে শূন্য পদের ঘোষণা। তার পরে প্রথা মেনে আবেদনকারীদের দরখাস্ত। এ বার তার মধ্যে থেকে ঝাড়াই–বাছাই করে এবং ইন্টারভিউ মারফত যোগ্য প্রার্থী বেছে নেওয়ার পর্ব। লোকসভা ভোটের আগে পুরোদস্তুর পেশাদারি কায়দায় নতুন প্রজন্মের সঙ্গে সংযোগ স্থাপনে নেমে পড়ল তৃণমূল।
বস্তুত, এই প্রক্রিয়ার সূত্রপাত তিন বছর আগে বিধানসভা ভোটের সময়। এ বারও তৃণমূলের আবেদনে সাড়া দিয়ে লোকসভা ভোটের আগে রাজ্যের শাসক দলের কমিউনিকেশন সেলে পরীক্ষামূলক ভাবে কাজ করতে চেয়েছেন ম্যানেজমেন্ট পড়ুয়ারা। তবে এ বারের উৎসাহ আগের চেয়ে বেশি। ইন্টার্ন হিসাবে নতুন প্রজন্মের এই প্রতিনিধিদের মধ্যে থেকে কাদের কী ভাবে কাজে লাগানো যায়, ঠিক করতে শীঘ্রই বৈঠকে বসছে তৃণমূলের একটি কোর কমিটি।
আবেদনকারীরা সকলে কলকাতার আইআইএম–এর ম্যানেজমেন্ট শিক্ষার্থী। তৃণমূলের সঙ্গে তাঁদের যোগাযোগের সেতু দলের জাতীয় মুখপাত্র তথা রাজ্যসভার সচেতক ডেরেক ও`ব্রায়েন। কিছু দিন আগেই জোকায় আইআইএম ক্যাম্পাসে ছাত্র–ছাত্রীদের সঙ্গে মুখোমুখি আসরে গিয়ে ডেরেক জানিয়েছিলেন, লোকসভা ভোটের আগে যোগাযোগ এবং তথ্যপ্রযুক্তি নির্ভর কাজ করার জন্য শিক্ষানবিশ মুখ খুঁজছেন তাঁরা। সুযোগ দেওয়া হবে দু`জনকে। ঠিক যে ভাবে বিধানসভা ভোটের আগে তৃণমূলের কন্ট্রোল রুমে কাজ করেছিলেন দুই ম্যানেজমেন্ট পড়ুয়া।
ডেরেকের ওই ঘোষণা শুনেই ৩১ জন পড়ুয়া আবেদন করেছিলেন। কিন্তু নীতিগত ভাবে পড়াশোনার ক্ষতির কথা ভেবে প্রথম বর্ষের পড়ুয়াদের ওই কাজে ব্যবহার করতে চায় না তৃণমূল। তাই প্রথম বর্ষের ১৭ জনকে বাদ দিয়ে বাকি ১৪ জনকে তালিকাভুক্ত করা হয়েছে। যাঁদের সঙ্গে গ্রুপ ডিসকাশনে বসবে তৃণমূলের পাঁচ সদস্যের একটি কোর কমিটি। নেওয়া হবে এক এক জনের ইন্টারভিউও। সেই প্রক্রিয়া থেকেই দু`জনকে বেছে নেওয়া হবে তৃণমূলে দু`মাসের শিক্ষানবিশির জন্য।
আইআইএম থেকে এমন সাড়া পেয়ে স্বভাবতই অভিভূত তৃণমূল নেতৃত্ব। ডেরেকের কথায়, “সমাজের সর্ব স্তরের মানুষের সঙ্গে কী ভাবে আরও নিখুঁত যোগাযোগ গড়ে তোলা যায়, তার কৌশল দল ঠিক করেছে। এঁদের কাজ হবে সেই কৌশল বাস্তবে রূপায়ণ করা। আমরা চাই শুধু ম্যানেজমেন্ট নয়, অন্যান্য শাখার ছাত্র–ছাত্রীরাও এই উদ্যোগে সামিল হতে এগিয়ে আসুন।“
পশ্চিমবঙ্গের গ্রামে–শহরে নবীন প্রজন্মের মধ্যে মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় সম্পর্কে আগ্রহের প্রমাণ সাম্প্রতিক কালে তৃণমূল নেতৃত্ব বারেবারেই পেয়েছেন নানা ভোটের ফলে। এ বারের তাৎপর্যপূর্ণ ঘটনা, আবেদনকারীদের মধ্যে সিংহ ভাগই অ–বাংলাভাষী এবং ভিন্ রাজ্যের। তাঁদের মধ্যে তৃণমূল সম্পর্কে উৎসাহ দেখে বাড়তি উৎসাহিত দলের নেতৃত্ব।
