Trinamool sweeps Rajya Sabha elections in Bengal

The elections for the 5 seats of the Rajya Sabha from Bengal, which will fall vacant in April this year, were held earlier today at the West Bengal Assembly. The polling started at 9 AM and continued till 4 PM.
Celebrated painter Jogen Chowdhury, actor Mithun Chakraborty, social activist KD Singh and editor of a Bengali daily Ahmed Hassan Imran had filed their nominations for Rajya Sabha at West Bengal Assembly as candidates of the Trinamool Congress.
Jogen Chowdhury received the support of 50 MLAs, Mithun Chakraborty and KD Singh got 49 votes each while Ahmed Hassan Imran got 47 votes.
Trinamool Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee dropped in at the State Assembly to congratulate the winning candidates. She dedicated the victory to the Maa, Mati, Manush of Bengal. She hoped the winners will pursue the cause of Bengal`s development in the Parliament.
“There was a time when we had only one representative in the Rajya Sabha. We have come a long way. I thank everyone who voted for our candidates”, remarked the Chairperson.
Veteran painter Jogen Chowdhury thanked Mamata Banerjee for reposing her faith on him. He said West Bengal CM had risen above party politics to take Bengal to new heights. Actor Mithun Chakraborty said he is a political novice and was here to learn. Ahmed Hassan Imran was confident that the surge of development under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee will soon be felt by the rest of India.
