Courage to be the sole criteria for getting a job in the police force: WB CM
Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee Friday said jobs would be available for those locals who come forward to help disaster management teams, the fire department, and police during times of distress.
She instructed the DGP, Mr GMP Reddy, Home Secretary Mr Basudeb Banerjee, and Chief Secretary Mr Sanjay Mitra to frame a policy so that those who fought bravely and helped disaster management teams in times of emergency get a job as early as possible.
The individual departments – the state home department, the state fire and emergency service department and the disaster management service – will provide the jobs.
Today, the Chief Minister`s gallantry award was given to four people who had helped police in various districts.
She maintained that the criteria for getting these jobs would be `courage`. “When I was the rail minister, I declared that the youths who will help the government railway police (GRP) to prevent railway sabotage would be given jobs in the Railways and we received appropriate response,” she said.
She instructed all police officers to be active and instructed DGPs to visit the police station on a routine basis.
According to Ms. Banerjee, crimes are committed more in deserted places and she hence instructed all the Officers-in-Charge (OC) of each police station to prepare a map for them to identify such localities easily. She added that the state government has already given government jobs to football players, archery players of Jangalmahal and North Bengal and instructed all the superintendents of police (SP) to give locals a chance to help police in times of need.
Regarding incidents of crime against women in the state, WB CM declared that 10 more womens` police station will be set up at Suri, Burdwan, Serampore, Englishbazaar in Malda, Diamond Harbour, Barrackpore, Darjeeling, and Midnapore.
Already there are 65 womens`police stations in different districts of the state. This year, around 59 police officers were awarded at the Investiture Ceremony of the West Bengal Police under different heads.
Apart from these, a few more projects under the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) were inaugurated by her at the same programme. They include renovation of Nimtala-Biswarjan Ghat, and construction of flyover connecting Jinjira Bazzar and Batanagar.
She also announced that the state government will disburse funds for tours that will be organised for the city`s cops and their families, once a year.
