Hearing Narendra Modi refer to Rishi Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay as “Bankim-da” left us stunned, embarrassed, and deeply angered. This casual, tea-stall tone coming from the country’s highest office is an insult Bengal will not forget.
The BJP’s contempt for Bengal has crossed every limit. A party that knows nothing of Bengal’s culture or intellectual heritage now feels entitled to address a literary emperor like Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay as if he were a neighbourhood acquaintance.
Bengal will simply not accept this disrespect towards its greatest minds.
