WB CM inaugurates Bhasha Shahid Smarak
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee inaugurated the Bhasha Shahid Smarak today at the Ekushe Udyan park, opposite MP Birla Planetarium in Kolkata. The inauguration happened at 5.30 pm.
The ‘swarak’ or ‘memorial’ is in memory of the martyrs of the Language Movement or Bhasha Andolan in Bangladesh, who gave their lives for the cause of Bengali to be made the national language, on February 21, 1952.
February 21 is now celebrated as International Mother Language Day, after being recognised as such by UNESCO in 1999, and later by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008. The day promotes awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity and multilingualism.
The memorial comprises of a statue of a woman with long braided hair, holding a dead man on her lap. The woman symbolises ‘Mother Language’ and the dead man, the martyrs who gave their lives for the cause of their language.
On the pedestal is etched the famous lines ‘Aamar bhai-er rakte rangano Ekushe February/ Ami ki bhulite pari,’ and ’21 February, Antarjatik Matribhasha Dibas’ below it, all in Bengali.
ভাষা শহীদ স্মারক এর উদ্বোধন করলেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী
আজ মাতৃভাষা দিবস উপলক্ষে ভাষা শহীদ স্মারক এর আবরণ উন্মোচন করলেন মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী শ্রীমতী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। আজ বিকাল সাড়ে পাঁচটায় বিড়লা প্ল্যানেটোরিয়ামের বিপরীতে ‘২১শে উদ্যানে’ এই অনুষ্ঠান হল।
২১ শে ফেব্রুয়ারি আন্তর্জাতিক মাতৃভাষা দিবস হিসেবে পালিত হয়।
তথ্য ও সংস্কৃতি দপ্তর ও কলকাতা পুরসভার যৌথ উদ্যোগে তৈরি হয়েছি এই স্মারকটি। মার্বেলের এই স্মারকটিতে একজন মহিলা ও একজন মৃত মানুষের ফলক রয়েছে। ওই মহিলা হলেন মাতৃভাষার প্রতীক এবং ওই মৃত মানুষটি হলেন শহীদদের প্রতীক।
স্মারকের নীচে লেখা “আমার ভাইয়ের রক্তে রাঙানো একুশে ফেব্রুয়ারি, আমি কি ভুলতে পারি”।
