Trinamool candidates file nominations for Rajya Sabha elections

Celebrated painter Jogen Chowdhury, actor Mithun Chakraborty, social activist KD Singh and editor of a Bengali daily Ahmed Hassan Imran filed their nominations for Rajya Sabha at West Bengal Assembly as candidates of the Trinamool Congress.

KD Singh, who is a Trinamool MP from Jharkhand, has another 18 months left for his term to end, but chose to contest polls from Bengal. Mithun Chakraborty`s nomination was announced by the Chairperson herself on Facebook. Regarding the nominations for Rajya Sabha, WB CM said that it was a tradition that eminent artists and social activists are nominated for Rajya Sabha, which the Trinamool followed.

28 January is the last date for filing Rajya Sabha nominations. The election will be held on 7 February. The support of 49 MLAs is needed for a candidate to win. Trinamool has the support of 193 MLAs, good enough to ensure three candidates and another 46 to back the fourth candidate, Ahmed Hassan Imran.
