PWD to start mega construction drive in Kolkata

The state PWD is going for a major construction drive in the city and for that a meeting was held at Nabanna on Thursday.

Chief minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee`s pet project `Dhana Dhanye cultural complex`, which will come up at Alipore Women`s jail, was also discussed, though it will be set up through consultants but PWD engineers will be co-coordinating with them regularly, as the CM wants to get this complex ready within two years. There will be an open air theatre and next to that, there will be a rooftop cafeteria on a three-tier car parking lot.

The PWD engineers will also carry out constructions at the SSKM Hospital as an academic building was planned in the meeting. The eight storeyed academy building of the Institute of Post Graduate Medical Education and Research (IPGMER) will be housing an auditorium with a seating capacity of 550. Adjoining it, a new hostel for PG students is being planned, which will also be eight storeyed. Also, a six storeyed building is planned to house a hospital for newborn babies that will include a neonatal ward.

The RG Kar Hospital and Medical College will also witness some major extensions as the health officials are planning new beds. A ten storeyed building for MR Bangur Hospital is also under consideration for providing quarters to doctors and for shelter facilities for patients` relatives.

The School of Tropical Medicine may have a new academy building with six floors. Talks of a seminar room, lecture halls and an auditorium, are also doing the rounds.

The Technician Studio, which was ravaged in a fire, is being renovated now. It will cost over Rs 4 crore for the entire renovation.

Moreover, the PWD is going to set up a judicial academy at Rajarhat for which a ten storey building will be constructed. “There will be special training for judicial officials as well as for the district judge level officers. Even there will be an auditorium for conferences of the judges and judicial officials.“

Also, the PWD officials plan to set up a new B Ed college on AJC Bose Road. The officials also discussed about a new Aliah University complex near Park Circus where already a four storeyed building has come up. The PWD is going to add six more floors to the building so that the university can start operating from here.
