Mamata Banerjee – A music connoisseur and a lyricist herself
Mamata Banerjee is a woman who dons many hats. She is the Chief Minister of West Bengal, the Chairperson of All India Trinamool Congress, an accomplished author, painter and also a songwriter. She has also published numerous poems and children’s rhymes. Her paintings are also well-known.
Didi is also a music connoisseur. After coming to power in 2011, she started the tradition of playing Rabindrasangeet at traffic signals. She instituted Sangeet Samman awards, to honour the music legends and talents who were neglected by the previous establishment. Sangeet Mela has become an important part of the festival calendar, giving opportunity to new talents to showcase their skills.
Mamata Banerjee brought back ‘Anurodher Ashor’ so that people could enjoy the gems of the golden era of music by legends like Dwijen Mukhopadhyay, Sandhya Mukherjee, and others.
Songs written by Mamata Banerjee have been published in albums and have been the theme songs of some of the famous Durga Pujas. They are also available online on YouTube and Facebook.
