I-Day celebrations at Red Road, Chief Minister wants more participation from masses

West Bengal will see a new Independence Day this year. For the first time on the behest of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee`s initiative State government has decided to shift the Independence Day programme from Writers` Buildings to Red Road deviating from a 64-year-old tradition. Chief Minister took this initiative to ensure that masses may join in the celebration and make this a colorful event rather than conventional programme.
Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee will be given a guard of honour by different units of Kolkata Police, who will inspect a parade down the road on the lines of the celebrations that takes place on Republic Day. Nearly 12-tableaux will roll down the road. The main programme which will be an hour-long programme will begin at 10.30 am with the hoisting of flag.
Ms. Mamata Banerjee had adhered to conventions last year but this year she had decided to make Independence Day celebrations a mass affair and shift the venue from BBD Bag to Red Road. All consulates in the city have been invited for the programme as well as the city's who's who and people from the world of culture.
