Bengal Govt coming up with scheme for employment of urban youths
After notifying a scheme for ensuring employment of one crore rural youths at a cost of Rs 300 crore, the State Cooperation Department will notify another scheme – this time for employment of youths in urban areas.
This was conveyed by the Cooperation Minister recently. He said that youths associated with self-help groups (SHG) would be made a part of this new scheme. While training in animal husbandry is going to be given stress on for rural youths, for urban youths, setting up businesses like cyber cafes and computer centres, and other avenues, are being thought of.
Going by the current number of members of urban SHGs, about a lakh youths would benefitted through this scheme. Each SHG has at least 20 members.
Since more money is required for setting up a business in an urban area, about Rs 400 crore will be allocated for this scheme. Considering a lakh youths, that amounts to the State Government spending Rs 40,000 per person.
According an official of the Cooperation Department, the Government would try to ensure that youths who set up businesses earn at least Rs 8,000 to 9,000 per month.
