Youth must come forward and join politics: Mamata Banerjee at Belpahari

Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee today addressed a public meeting at Belpahari in Jhargram district. She urged the youth to come forward and join politics to serve the people.

Highlights of her speech:

The youth must come forward and carry the party’s mantle forward. I was a youth activist and a student leader too

Over the last few days, as we faced threat of a cyclone, we had set up a control room in Kharagpur and I was myself stationed there. Those who have suffered damages, do not worry. We are with you, the government is with you.

Jangalmahal is my favourite place. There was a time when people lived in fear here. Tourists were afraid to come to these areas.

We have not forgotten the state of neglect and apathy that Jangalmahal faced during the previous regime. There was no food, no work, no transport, no hospitals. In the last eight years almost, I have repeatedly visited these areas to ensure that development takes place in these regions.

Now there is peace in Jangalmahal. We are developing the infrastructure here. From multi gyms and indoor stadiums to the Jhargram stadium – a lot of work has been done in this district

Schools, colleges, roads, hospitals, hostels – we have done all we could for the development of the people

I have visited Jangalmahal very often. And then there are people who come here once in five years. Modi babu comes only at the time of elections.

This is not a panchayat or a state election; this is an election for the Centre. But in the last five years, what has Narendra Modi done? You have raised the prices of fuel, cooking gas, you have demonetised notes, leading to difficulties and deaths.

BJP is creating divisions within the society. They are creating hatred with false narratives. They are making false promises and misleading people with wrong statements.

They claim that no pujas are held in Bangla. Tell me, don’t you celebrate Durga Puja, Saraswati Puja and all other festivals?

The only thing that is not happening in Bangla is Modi. We must not let him or his party enter here. We have to preserve the communal harmony of the State
