West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee inaugurated a slew of new projects for the development of North Bengal at a programme at Matigara, Siliguri. She addresses a huge gathering of people who turned up braving the torrential downpour.
WB CM Mamata Banerjee also distributed land pattas and cheques to the poor people under the `Amar Bari` scheme. Kisan credit cards were distributed to farmers. CM disbursed financial allowance and cycle to poor students.
Excerpts from the Chief Minster`s speech:
“Tourism is the basic and main source of revenue in North Bengal so we have planned many projects to boost tourism in the region. Gazaldoba Tourism Hub project has been inaugurated today; I also have plans for a film city in the region. We want to launch `tea tourism`.
Our government is also concerned about lifting the standards of education. In the last 2 years we have established 35 new primary schools and 28 primary schools have been upgraded to higher secondary schools. We have set up an engineering college at Tagda; general degree colleges, model schools, ITIs, polytechnic colleges are coming up at various locations in North Bengal.
A new ESI hospital is to be set up in Siliguri, for which land has already been allotted. Government hospitals are being mordernised and renovated; a nutrition centre will be established for the children; we have also constructed several fair price medicine shops in North Bengal.
The thrust of the government is on small-scale industry, as that will fetch employment and revenue. We have also sanctioned a huge amount for a power plant project for the region.
North Bengal will get its new secretariat soon; we will fulfil this long pending demand of the people. We have also established a Regional Disaster Management Center has.
We have launched Kanyashree and Yuvashree schemes for girls and the youth. The youth is tomorrow`s asset; they have to be educated and independent. I will work for the betterment of the people till I am alive. If the people are happy, I am happy and satisfied.“
