The Bengal Government is ready with the second phase of its highly successful scheme, Bonyo22pran Sathi (Honorary Wildlife Volunteer Service Programme), which offers wildlife enthusiasts the opportunity to venture into core areas of forests, especially in north Bengal and the Sundarbans, to get real-life experiences on how to deal with animals and in the process, learn about them through hands-on experience.

Interested participants for this study-cum-adventure programme of the Forest Department have to submit a form, the last date for which is June 30.

Those who will go into the forests will go as conservationists and not merely as tourists, said the Forest Minister while announcing the dates and other details. He said that this is one-of-a-kind scheme in the country.

After the completion of the programme, the enthusiasts will be expected to spread the message of wildlife protection and environmental conservation in their localities.

As part of the programme, visitors will stay with forest guards in camps, which will also give them the experience of keeping guard in a forest. Before a tour starts, the visitors will be provided a day-long training on how to behave if they come close to animals like tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, etc. during their adventure. A team will be accompanied by two Forest Department officials, who will be experts in handling wild animals.

The first phase drew applications from a lot of enthusiasts, and so has the second phase. Applications have already come from a diverse range of people like school teachers, professors, retired Army personnel and businessmen.

There are six national parks and 15 wildlife sanctuaries in Bengal.

Bengal Forest Department, in a first-of-its-kind experiment with leopards in the state, has radio-collared and released two of them in the wild. This will help officials and experts get crucial information about the animals’ behavior, and consequently, about the behavior of leopards in general, and thus, among other things, prevent human-leopard conflicts in north Bengal in the long run. It is a fact that leopards mostly attack humans in self-defence.

Earlier, the Bengal Government has successfully radio-collared tigers and elephants, gleaning crucial information about these animals.

According to a senior Forest Department official, this experiment is much more important as leopards stay closest to humans, with the territories of both often overlapping. At least 60-70 human injuries are reported every year in north Bengal because of leopard attacks.

Significantly, therefore, the two leopards (both males, with one being a sub-adult and the other, an adult) radio-collared, according to the chief wildlife warden of Bengal, are from two human-dominated areas near Jaldapara National Park and Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary. One of them was captured from a place close to Dalgaon tea estate near Jaldapara and the other from a private tea estate in Sukna, near Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary.

Officials want to track the cats’ movement and behavior, and the strategies they take to avoid direct contact with people when they sneak into human-dominated areas. The collars will also work as an early-warning system for man-animal conflict. Additionally, the animals’ movement pattern will help to form an idea about their habitats, which can later be scanned for scat samples; and analysis of these samples can reveal their food habits.

The chief wildlife warden has said they have plans to collar more leopards to get an idea about the leopard population.

 

জলদাপাড়ায় চিতাবাঘের গলায় পরানো হচ্ছে রেডিও কলার

চিতাবাঘের গলায় রেডিও কলার পরানোর সিদ্ধান্ত নিল জলদাপাড়া জাতীয় উদ্যান কর্তৃপক্ষ। চিতাবাঘের গতিবিধি জানতে পরানো হবে এই রেডিও কলার। বারবার জঙ্গল থেকে বাঘ বেরিয়ে আসার কারণেই এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হয়েছে।

কয়েক সপ্তাহ আগে জলদাপাড়ার জঙ্গল থেকে ফালাকাটার ডালিমপুর গ্রামে ঢুকে পড়েছিল একটি চিতাবাঘ। বাড়ির উঠোনে চিতাবাঘ দেখে খাবারের থালা ফেলে প্রাণে বাঁচে মামা, ভাগ্নে। পরে বনবিভাগের কর্মীরা এসে চিতাবাঘটিকে ঘুমপাড়ানি গুলি করে কাবু করে। পরে চিতাবাঘটিকে সুস্থ করে রেডিও কলার পরিয়ে জলদাপাড়া জঙ্গলে ছেড়ে দেওয়া হয়।

বনবিভাগ সূত্রে খবর, জলদাপাড়া জাতীয় উদ্যানে প্রায় ২০০ চিতাবাঘ রয়েছে। প্রাথমিকভাবে ফালাকাটার ডালিমপুর গ্রামে বেরিয়ে পড়া চিতাবাঘের গলায় রেডিও কলার লাগিয়ে জঙ্গলে ছাড়া হয়েছে। ধাপে ধাপে আরও বেশ কয়েকটি চিতাবাঘকে একই কায়দায় রেডিও কলার পরিয়ে জঙ্গলে ছাড়া হবে।

After a successful launch in north Bengal, the Bonyopran Sathi Scheme, aimed at education on wildlife through jungle-camping-cum-safari, has been launched for south Bengal. The scheme was launched on November 25 at Gorumara in Jalpaiguri district.

It was launched on December 4 with the selection of ten people for the first safari in the Sunderbans. They will be camping in groups with forest rangers to get a first-hand account of how animals are dealt with and their habits, and how guarding of forests is carried out.

The participants will also learn about human-animal conflicts and how to prevent them.

According to a senior official of the Forest Department, which is conducting these trips, 124 people had submitted applications for participating, out of which 47 were shortlisted. From these, in the first batches, 13 have been selected for north Bengal and 10 for south Bengal. The rest will be accommodated in successive batches.

এবার দক্ষিণবঙ্গেও চালু হল ‘বন্যপ্রাণ সাথী’ প্রকল্প। প্রথম ব্যাচে ১০জন নির্বাচিত হয়েছেন। তাঁরা সুন্দরবনের বিভিন্ন জায়গায় বনদপ্তরের একেবারে ফিল্ড পর্যায়ের কর্মীদের সঙ্গে থেকে বন্যপ্রাণ সংরক্ষণের বিভিন্ন কাজ দেখবেন এবং শিখবেন।

প্রসঙ্গত, এই প্রকল্পের আওতায় বন ও বন্যপ্রাণীদের যাঁরা ভালোবাসেন, তাঁদের বনের সংরক্ষিত এলাকায় গিয়ে দিনরাত থেকে বন দপ্তরের কাজ দেখা এবং শেখারও সুযোগ করেছে রাজ্য।

গত ২৫ নভেম্বর উত্তরবঙ্গে প্রকল্পের প্রথম পর্যায়ের উদ্বোধন হয়েছিল। প্রথম পর্যায়ে উত্তরবঙ্গের ব্যাচে মোট ১৩ জন গত ২৬-৩০ নভেম্বর বনকর্মীদের সঙ্গে জঙ্গলে থেকে সব কাজ হাতে-কলমে দেখেছেন। ৯ ডিসেম্বর পর্যন্ত সুন্দরবনের দোবাঁকি, বুড়িরডাবরি, খাটুয়াঝুড়ি, হরিখালি প্রভৃতি এলাকায় এঁরা বনকর্মীদের সঙ্গে ঘোরেন।

কীভাবে জঙ্গলের ভিতরে বনকর্মীরা কাজ করেন, বিশেষ করে রাতের নিরাপত্তা টহলদারি সহ সীমান্ত (ভারত-বাংলাদেশ) এলাকার নজরদারির কাজ দেখবেন এই ব্যাচের সদস্যরা। বনমন্ত্রী বলেন, পরবর্তী পর্যায়ে মূলত বন্যপ্রাণ সচেতনতায় এঁদের কাজে লাগানো হবে। বিশেষ করে বন সংলগ্ন গ্রাম এলাকায় বন্যপ্রাণী ঢুকে পড়ার ঘটনা ঘটলে বিপুল সমস্যা হয়। মানুষ-বন্যপ্রাণ সংঘাত কমানো, বন্যপ্রাণীদের উপর হামলা রোধ সহ বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে কীভাবে সচেতনতা গড়ে তোলা যায়, তাতে এই প্রশিক্ষণ প্রাপ্তদের কাজে লাগানোরও পরিকল্পনা রয়েছে বনদপ্তরের।

বন্যপ্রাণ শাখার এক আধিকারিকের কথায়, মোট ১২৪জন আবেদন জমা দিয়েছিলেন। যার মধ্যে ৪৭জনকে বেছে নেওয়া হয়েছে। এদের মধ্যে উত্তরবঙ্গের ব্যাচে ১৩জন এবং দক্ষিণবঙ্গের ব্যাচে ১০জন আপাতত জঙ্গলে গিয়ে বনকর্মীদের সঙ্গে থাকা এবং কাজ করার সুযোগ পাচ্ছেন। পরবর্তী বছরে ধাপে ধাপে বাকিরাও এই সুযোগ পাবেন।

The Bengal Government’s Forest Department, in a unique bid to garner public support for wildlife conservation, has launched a project, Bonyopran Sathi (Honorary Wildlife Volunteer Service Programme), that offers wildlife enthusiasts to venture into core areas of forests, especially in north Bengal and the Sundarbans, to get real-life experiences on how to deal with animals.

The initiative was kicked off in north Bengal on November 26, in which 13 persons are being allowed to spend nights in as many as six core areas in the forests of Jaldapara, Gorumara and Buxa.

Visitors will be taken in small groups of 10 to 15 to six earmarked core areas of forests in north Bengal forest and the Sundarbans.

The visitors will stay with forest guards in camps, which will also give them the experience of keeping guard in the forest. Before a tour starts, they will be provided a day-long training on how to behave if they come close to an elephant, a leopard or a deer during their adventure. A team will be accompanied by two Forest Department officials, who will be experts in handling wild animals.

The programme, which was announced some months back, has already attracted a lot of wildlife enthusiasts, with the Forest Department website receiving as many as 128 applications. The programme is open only to residents of Bengal over the age of 18.

গরুমারা জাতীয় উদ্যানে শুরু দেশের প্রথম বণ্যপ্রাণ সাথী প্রকল্প

গরুমারা জাতীয় উদ্যানে শুরু হল দেশের মধ্যে প্রথম বন্যপ্রাণ সাথী প্রকল্প, উদ্বোধন করলেন বনমন্ত্রী। বন কর্মীদের সঙ্গে ঘন জঙ্গলে থাকতে হবে। কাজ করতে হবে বন কর্মীদের সঙ্গে। এক কথায় অভূতপূর্ব অভিজ্ঞতার সুযোগ। প্রথম পর্যায়ে ডুয়ার্সের একাধিক জঙ্গলে কাজ করবেন ১৩ জন বন্যপ্রাণ সাথী। সুন্দরবনেও চালু হবে এই প্রকল্প।

জঙ্গলের নিস্তব্ধতায় হঠাৎ চিতাবাঘের গর্জন। খুব কাছ থেকে হাতির দলের যাতায়াত। বাইসনের দৌড়। নাম না জানা পাখিদের কলবর। শহুরে জীবন থেকে একেবারে অন্য জগতে কয়েকটা দিন-রাত। পরিবেশ প্রেমীদের জন্য সেই সুযোগ করে দিয়েছে বন দফতরের বন্যপ্রাণ সাথী প্রকল্প।

বন্যপ্রাণ সাথী প্রকল্পে অংশ নিতে ১২৮টি আবেদন জমা পড়ে, তার মধ্যে ১৩ জন বন্যপ্রাণ সাথীকে বাছাই করা হয়েছে। ১৩ জনের মধ্যে দু’জন মহিলাও রয়েছেন। বনকর্মীদের সঙ্গে সবসময় জঙ্গলে থাকবেন তাঁরা। রাতে পাহাড়ার দায়িত্বেও থাকবেন বন্যপ্রাণ সাথীরা।

বন দপ্তরের এই উদ্যোগে খুশি পরিবেশ প্রেমিরা।

The Wildlife Wing of Forest Department manages 4692 sq km of protected area network, i.e., 5.28% of geographical area of state (as of 2015), up from 4.56% prior to 2013. The Bengal Government is committed to the conservation and protection of wildlife in the State and has taken several initiatives for the same.

The Wildlife Wing has achieved great success in the conservation of Rhino and Elephant habitat. The population of Rhinos touched 236 and Elephants touched 647 in 2015, the highest in the last few decades. Recent ‘Camera Trap’ technology showed healthy population of tigers in the wild and for the first time, a census of crocodiles was done in 2012 in state.

The most notable initiatives of West Bengal Zoo Authority are starting of works of Sunderban Wild Animal Park at Jharkhali and North Bengal wild Animal Park at Siliguri. Padmaza Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling now acquired the status of best zoological park in the country.

A new wildlife sanctuary, Pakhi Bitan, was notified at Gajoldoba in North Bengal for conserving the habitat and protecting populations of migratory birds.

Bengal Safari Park, spread over 297 hectares of natural forest land consisting of sal and other trees, was inaugurated by the Chief Minister in January, 2016. The park has a mixed herbivore and a tiger safari was recently inaugurated. Lesser cats, fresh water crocodile and gharial and representative birds of North Bengal are displayed in large enclosures in the park.

 

বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষণে দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ রাজ্য সরকার

বন্যপ্রাণী সংরক্ষন ও নিরাপত্তায় বদ্ধপরিকর রাজ্য সরকার; এই উদ্দেশ্যে অনেক পদক্ষেপ গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে।

রাজ্য বনদপ্তরের অন্তর্গত বন্যপ্রাণী বিভাগ রাজ্যের ৪৬৯২ বর্গ কিঃ মিঃ অঞ্চলকে নিয়ন্ত্রন করে। এই অঞ্চলটির আয়তন গোটা রাজ্যের আয়তনের ৫.২৮ শতাংশ (২০১৫ সাল পর্যন্ত), যা ২০১৩ সাল অবধি ৪.৫৬ শতাংশ ছিল।

গণ্ডার ও হাতি’র সংরক্ষনে ইতিমধ্যেই সাফল্য অর্জন করেছে বন্যপ্রাণী বিভাগ। গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা ২৩৬ ও হাতির সংখ্যা ৬৪৭ হয়েছে ২০১৫ সালের গণনা অনুযায়ী। অত্যাধুনিক “ক্যামেরা ট্র্যাপ” প্রযুক্তিতে দেখা গেছে বাঘেদের জনসংখ্যাও বেশ ভাল। ২০১২ সালে রাজ্যে প্রথমবার কুমিরের গণনা করা হয়।

West Bengal Zoo Authority-র উল্লেখযোগ্য পদক্ষেপ হিসেবে বলা যেতে পারে, ঝড়খালিতে ‘সুন্দরবন ওয়াইল্ডলাইফ পার্ক ও শিলিগুড়িতে ‘উত্তরবঙ্গ বন্য প্রাণী পার্ক তৈরী। দার্জিলিঙের ‘পদ্মজা নাইডু হিমালয়ান জুলজিকাল পার্ক’ দেশের সেরা চিড়িয়াখানা হিসেবে স্বীকৃত।

পরিযায়ী পাখিদের সংরক্ষন ও নিরাপত্তা প্রদানের উদ্দেশ্যে নির্মিত উত্তরবঙ্গের গাজলডোবার “পাখি বিতান” হল একটি নতুন উদ্যোগ।

২৯৭ হেক্টর জমিতে তৈরী বেঙ্গল সাফারি পার্ক উদ্বোধন করেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় ২০১৬ সালের জানুয়ারি মাসে। ওই পার্কে কিছুদিন আগেই টাইগার সাফারির উদ্বোধন করা হয়। কুমির ও ঘড়িয়ালের পাশাপাশি উত্তরবঙ্গের কিছু পরিচিত পাখিও প্রচুর সংখ্যায় দেখা যাবে এখানে।

Tourists visiting the Hills this April or May will get to walk through the original forest area of Darjeeling.. The wildlife division is set to revive four popular trekking routes that have now become mostly unused.

An initiative of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, the wildlife division is working on a project to renovate the Nature Interpretation Center (NIC) at Tiger Hill and revive the four trekking paths.

The trekking routes to be revived are:

  • 5.5 km Tiger Hill-Rambhi path, which is one of the oldest of the region,
  • 7 km Tiger Hill-Chatakpur,
  • 6 km 3rd Mile-Dabaipani and
  • Keventer’s Road-Tiger Hill, butterfly trail.

 

The routes offer birding experience and, if lucky, one can catch glimpses of wild animals too. The wildlife division has started training locals as guides to help tourists with the trails that will officially be open to the public from May.

 

রাজ্য সরকারের উদ্যোগে দার্জিলিঙে পুনরুজ্জীবিত হতে চলেছে ট্রেকিং

পর্যটকদের জন্য সুখবর। এবছরের মে মাস থেকে দার্জিলিঙে থাকছে নতুন চমক। এবার থেকে পর্যটকরা ঘন জঙ্গলের মধ্যে দিয়ে ট্রেকিং করতে পারবেন। বন্যপ্রাণ বিভাগ ৪টি প্রায় অবলুপ্ত ট্রেকিং রুটকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করতে চলেছেন।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর অনুপ্রেরণায় বন্যপ্রাণ বিভাগ টাইগার হিলের নেচার ইন্টারপ্রিটেশান সেন্টারের সংস্কারের কাজ ইতিমধ্যেই শুরু করেছে।

যে ৪টি ট্রেকিং রুট নতুন করে চালু হবে সেগুলি হলঃ-

  • ৫.৫ কিঃ মিঃ দীর্ঘ টাইগার হিল-রাম্ভি পথ
  • ৭ কিঃ মিঃ দীর্ঘ টাইগার হিল-চতকপুর
  • ৬ কিঃ মিঃ দীর্ঘ থার্ড মাইল-ডাবাইপানি
  • কেভেন্টার্স রোড-টাইগার হিল বাটারফ্লাই ট্রেল

 

এই রুটগুলিতে নানারকম পাখির পাশাপাশি বন্য প্রাণীরও দেখা মিলতে পারে। বন্যপ্রাণ বিভাগ ইতিমধ্যেই স্থানীয় লোকজনদের প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়ার কাজ শুরু করে দিয়েছে যাতে মে মাসে আনুষ্ঠানিকভাবে রুটগুলি চালু হলে তারা পর্যটকদের জন্য গাইডের কাজ করতে পারে।

The West Bengal Forest Department has launched an SMS-based early warning system to prevent elephant attacks.

Forest Department employees are being trained on how to identify rogue elephants and immobilise them when they start causing damage. These employees will act as the first line of defence before experts reach the spot.

The State is procuring at least 10 tranquilliser guns. Two rescue and rehabilitation centres are also coming up, one each in the northern and southern parts of the State.

An Elephant Movement Coordination Committee (EMCC) has been set up too, which is monitoring the daily movements of elephant herds as well as solitary elephants.

হাতির হানা রুখতে এস এম এসের মাধ্যমে সতর্কবার্তা পৌঁছে দেওয়ার পরিকল্পনা সরকারের

হাতির হানা রুখতে রাজ্য বন দপ্তর একটি নতুন উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে। এবার থেকে আগে থেকে এস এম এসের মাধ্যমে সতর্কবার্তা পৌঁছে দেওয়ার পরিকল্পনা করেছে বন বিভাগ।

একটি হাতি যখন ক্ষতি করছে তখন তাকে কিভাবে নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে হয় সে ব্যাপারে বন বিভাগের কর্মচারীদের প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া শুরু হয়েছে। বিশেষজ্ঞদের স্পটে পৌঁছাতে তারা একটি প্রতিরক্ষামূলক লাইন হিসেবে কাজ করবে।

রাজ্য কমপক্ষে ১০টি ঘুমের ওষুধের বন্দুকের ব্যবস্থা করেছে। উত্তর ও দক্ষিণবঙ্গে একটি করে উদ্ধারকারী ও পুনর্বাসন কেন্দ্র তৈরি করা হবে।

একটি এলিফ্যান্ট মুভমেন্ট কো-অর্ডিনেশন কমিটি তৈরি করা হবে। এই কমিটি হাতির দৈনন্দিন চলাফেরার ওপর নজর রাখবে।

Like every year, West Bengal Government is celebrating Wildlife Day on December 8 throughout the State.

Forests and wildlife are the assets of Bengal. Conservation of this spectacular bio-diversity is our responsibility.

West Bengal Government has been committed to protection of wildlife and conservation of forests over the last four years.

 

Here are the achievements of the Forest Department:

Conservation of biodiversity: With the co-operation of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), a project of Rs 406 crore has been taken up to conserve forests and wildlife.

Eco-tourism: With the help of West Bengal Forest Development Corporation Ltd., 17 eco-tourism projects in North Bengal and three in South Bengal have been taken up. Cottages are being constructed. The Lamahata project has already started.

West Bengal Wasteland Development Corporation Ltd: The West Bengal Wasteland Development Corporation Ltd. (WBWDCL)has been made functional. Under the aegis of WBWDCL, tree plantation has been carried out over 1260 acres.

Wildlife census: Census of wild animals have been performed, including those of rhinoceros, gaur (both in Gorumara National Park), Red Panda (Singalila National Park) and crocodile (in Sunderbans National Park).

Coastal Zone Management Project: A Coastal Zone Management Project has been started in Purba Medinipur district with the assistance of the World Bank.

West Bengal Zoo Authority: West Bengal Zoo Authority has become operational and 10 small zoos have been brought under its purview. A master plan is being prepared for all the small zoos in the state. Special steps have been taken to conserve endangered species.

Selling kendu leaves: Many people in the state are engaged in the plucking and selling ofkendu leaves. With a view to help such people with their livelihoods, the state government has increased the price at which they can sell the leaves from Rs 48 per chatta (contains 2000 leaves) to Rs 75 per chatta.
