After Kolkata, Asansol & Durgapur go for waste segregation at source

After Kolkata, the practice of segregating garbage at source has been started in the areas under the jurisdiction of Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA), that is, the cities of Asansol and Durgapur.

The State Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister recently inaugurated this upgraded solid waste management system in Asansol.

The practice implies households putting their waste into two dustbins according to whether they are dry or waste.

Household dry waste refers to all items – both recyclable and non-recyclable – that are not considered wet or soiled, including bottles, cans, clothing, plastic, wood, glass, metals and paper.

Household wet waste refers to all items that are organic, including food items, soiled food wrappers, hygiene products, tissues and wet towels, as well as any other item that would contaminate the recyclable wastes.

While inaugurating the project, the mayor said that this segregation at source will do away with the need of finding a trenching ground to dump everything. The wet waste can be turned into compost while the dry waste can be recycled separately.

The mayor also reminded the people that no project is successful if the participation of the people is poor and so the State Government does its best to involve people by making them aware of the benefits of a particular project.
