Digital library on Kazi Nazrul at Nazrul Tirtha

A digital library on Kazi Nazrul Islam at Nazrul Tirtha in New Town was inaugurated on December 20 by the State Urban Development Minister. It will be extremely beneficial to those carrying out research on Nazrul.

The digital library will be the first-of-its-kind in Bengal. Initially, all the books of Nazrul that have become out-of-print and are lying in different libraries in Kolkata have been digitised. The library will have the first prints of Nazrul’s own books, manuscripts, notations of Nazrul’s songs, advertisements, booklets and photos of his vinyl records, and interviews of Nazrul scholars.

There will also be scripts of plays where Nazrul’s songs have been used, copies of Betar Jagat, the magazine of All India Radio (AIR) for which he worked and magazines edited by Nazrul.

It may be recalled that after coming to power in 2011, Mamata Banerjee laid the foundation stone of a university named after Nazrul, Kazi Nazrul University in Asansol. Nazrul Tirtha was set up to carry out research on him. Cultural shows, seminars and symposia on his life and works are organised to celebrate the birth anniversary of the poet all over the state.

Though Nazrul did not have any formal education, he became famous as a poet at the age of 20 and was known as the ‘Bidrohi Kobi, or ‘Rebel Poet’. He was imprisoned for his criticism of the British rule and many of his poetry books like Agnibina and Bisher Bashi were banned by the British colonial rulers.

Nazrul was also a brilliant music teacher, composer and singer. The 78 rpm discs of Nazrul’s songs by Megaphone Records and Hindusthan Records recorded the highest sales between 1935 and 1939. Many revolutionaries sang his songs which criticised the oppression of British rule.

Importantly for today’s times, his criticism of communalism was reflected in his poems, songs and essays. In fact, he composed many Shyama Sangeets (songs dedicated to the goddess Kali) which are immensely popular.

Bengal Govt to return land to 52 owners in Kawakhali

After the Mamata Banerjee government’s immense success in returning land to farmers in Singur, it has decided to return the same to 52 families in Kawakhali who had their lands seized by the then-Left Front government to set up a residential township at Kawakhali in Siliguri.

It may be recalled that the Left Front government had acquired plots in the Kawakhali, Purajhar and Tikulikatha areas for the township. Despite opposition, the acquisition process continued till 2007. Most people who lost their land, were owners of small plots and they had raised slogans against the then-Chief Minister and the then-Urban Development minister.

Recollecting the days when land was “forcibly” acquired by the erstwhile Left Front government, State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Partha Chatterjee said: “There was protest against land acquisition in Kawakhali. We had raised our voices against it and faced several hurdles when we went to Siliguri at that time. Now, we are returning the land. They will be getting the land in the area under the jurisdiction of Siliguri Jalpaiguri Development Authority (SJDA).”

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had kept her word of returning land to the farmers in Singur as it was forcefully acquired by the Left Front government “going against the will of land owners”. It was in September 2016 that the Supreme Court had directed the state government to return the land to the farmers after returning to its earlier condition. The apex court had observed the land acquisition as a “farce”.

Within the time set by the Supreme Court, the Mamata Banerjee government had once again turned the land to its previous condition and distributed it to its actual owners. The Chief Minister had said that Singur would be a model in the agriculture sector of the world. The people of Kawakhali have appreciated the move of the state government to return the land to those who had lost them to “forceful” acquisition.

Bengal Govt plans underground network for cable TV lines

The Bengal Government is planning to construct an underground network of cable TV lines in an effort to keep the city clean, state Urban Development Minister said on Wednesday.

“In New Town, we have done it and will start soon in Bidhannagar. In Kolkata, we will soon start a pilot project for underground laying of cable TV lines,” he said at the inauguration of ‘Cable TV Show’.

He said this is part of a plan by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee who wants the city to look more beautiful without wires hanging from every nook and corner. According to the minister, this would also give jobs to many unemployed youth in the city.

The move would minimise chances of any outside disturbances in connectivity as sometimes wires get damaged during cyclones, felling of trees and other similar instances.

The work is in the final stages and last minute touches are being given. Once these 283 parks are completed and are thrown opened to the public it will cover 470 acre of new green space in urban areas.

E-Governance: WB Govt to introduce ‘zero visitors’ system

In an initiative to develop smart governance, the state urban development department is planning to introduce `zero visitors’ system in which all civic services will be provided online or through mobile applications.

Urban development department officials held a meeting recently with representatives of WEBEL to discuss on how to go about it.

Topics like m-governance (mobile governance) solutions, online applications, self-correcting modules to prevent any incomplete application, generating unique application number and sending SMS alerts were discussed at length in the meeting.

Once in place, the new system will spare citizens the pain of doing the rounds of municipal offices. Not only will it enable a taxpayer apply for a number of services, they will also be able track the progress online and lodge a complaint. Instructions have already been given to officials to shortlist requirements of tax-payers. The concept was discussed by state urban development secretary a few days back at the Administrative Training Institute (ATI) with IAS officers from 11 states. The necessity of visiting government offices should be reduced as much as possible using m-governance and that this should be developed as a policy goal.

Singapore team shows interest in New Town smart city project

A seven-member team from Singapore met state urban development officials recently and showed interest in various smart city projects, especially that of New Town.

The state government has asked the delegation to see if they could form a consortium to assist the government for the smart city projects.

The state is also planning to stage a road show in Singapore to promote the smart city projects.

The delegation from Singapore consisted of Grace Chiew, Wong So San, Khor Aik Lan, Amita Mehta, Tay Lian Cheu, Uma Maheswaran and Nirup Jayanth.

The delegates expressed interest mainly in urban planning and mobility and development of parks, leisure centres and other facilities.

New Kolkata flyover will change the way the city commutes

Kolkata is set to get its longest flyover today when the Park Circus-Parama Island flyover will  be inaugurated by West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee after her historic visit from Bhutan. The inauguration will take place at 12 Noon.

Longest flyover

It is the longest flyover of the state. Vehicles will start plying immediately. The flyover will ease traffic movement to and from the airport to a great extent.

While the main flyover is 4.3 km, the total length, including the flanks and the ramps, is more than 9 km. The flyover will allow one to reach EM Bypass from Howrah in a seamless movement across three flyovers, covering only 300 metres on the ground — near Park Circus Maidan — and 500 metres between the Police Training School and the second Hooghly bridge.

The ground distance will be reduced further once a flank connecting the Parama Island- Park Circus flyover with the AJC Bose Road flyover is finished. Work on this project will start immediately after October 9.

Route

The flyover will take off and also get down near the Park Circus seven-point crossing on its western end. On the eastern end, there is one flank near PC Chandra Garden for vehicles headed to and coming from the Ruby rotary, and another near The Spring Club.

Biswa Bangla

A revolving Biswa Bangla logo will also be inaugurated at the Science City crossing on the EM Bypass on Thursday. The revolving logo — a globe with the Bengali letter ‘’ on it — will rotate twice every minute. There will be fountains in three colours surrounding the 16ft-diameter globe. A 13.5metre pool has also been built around it.

Bengal Govt plans to launch mono rail in New Town

The state government is planning to introduce mono rail in New Town and to connect it with Metro Rail to improve transport system in the city, said State Urban Development Minister Firhad Hakim.

The minister said this while announcing that Kolkata has joined the league of “C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group”, which is a global network of cities tackling climate change and driving urban action that reduces both green house gas emission and climate risks.

He said that this was a huge opportunity for the city and would open new avenues for Kolkata to develop it as a modern city.

He added that since this was a huge opportunity to interact with experts from other global cities to upgrade civic facilities, the state government would focus more on upgrading the city’s transport system.

“The state government is keen to revive the entire transport system. As part of this initiative we are planning to introduce mono rail in Salta Lake Sector-V and New Town. The idea is to connect the mono rail with the Metro Rail so that people can enjoy a world class transport system,” the minister said.

“The planning is there and we are in the process of implementing the project. We have to wait a little bit as the population of New Town is yet to achieve its potential. For the survival of such projects there needs to be enough users,” Firhad Hakim added.
