Didi visits INTTUC hunger strike mancha

Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee today visited the protest mancha where INTTUC activists are staging a hunger strike. The hunger strike is being staged at the foot of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue on Mayo Road from August 16 to protest against the Central Government’s decision to disinvest 42 public sector companies.

The Trinamool Chairperson met the trade union activists at the mancha and spoke with them.

The protest is being led by INTTUC’s senior leader and Trinamool’s Rajya Sabha MP, Dola Sen.

It may be recalled that Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee staged a 26-day hunger strike to protest against the illegal acquisition of farm land in Singur.

Break down the walls that are trying to crush your dreams: Didi to students

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Mamata Banerjee today addressed students at Dharmatala in Kolkata on the occasion of the foundation day of Trinamool Chhatra Parishad (TMCP), the students’ wing of Trinamool Congress.

She gave a rousing speech, asking the students to break down all the walls that are trying to crush your dreams. She asked them to never bow their head to the atrocities and fear tactics of the BJP.

Mamata Banerjee also announced a two-day-long interactive session with students leaders of the TMCP from across all the districts on November 14 and 15. Through the interactive sessions, she said, she would select the next level leadership of the party.

Highlights of her speech:

Bangla is the land of the strong, the land of culture, the land of history. Bangla will show the way to the future

We never bow our heads in defeat, we never give up

Some people are trying to scare us, people who are new in the political field. They don’t know what fighting political fights really means. It is we who have fought our way to reach where we are today

Trinamool Congress has achieved what it has after a lot of struggle

The BJP has bought off the country. On the one hand, they have taken over all the media channels, all the newspapers. That’s why there is only the BJP’s news that you read about and only their leaders that you see

And on the other hand, they are continuously sending advisories to us. The word ‘advisory’ has become their favourite word

People in the country cannot speak up anymore. The duty of students is to speak up, to protest against the wrongs

Partha Chatterjee will tell you when the student union elections will be held

The BJP is using religion to create an atmosphere of fear and hate in the country

Look at the country’s state of economy. The government has brought together a group of retired people – bureaucrats and others – and it is they who have advised the RBI to give away its emergency reserves to the Centre. This is deplorable

Also look at Kashmir. They have shut off the media. They have shut everybody off using the power of the gun

The CPI(M) had come out on the streets of Kolkata once protesting against the war in Vietnam, shouting the slogan, ‘Amar naam tomar naam Vietnam’. And now they have come together with the BJP. They are scared of the BJP

The BJP is scaring our ministers, other ex-ministers and politicians using Central agencies

They are asking the Election Commission (EC) to send letters to political parties saying there is discrepancy in the latter’s accounts

The country is moving towards a presidential form of government – one election, one party, one emergency. There is an emergency situation

Our freedom fighters fought against British for their atrocities. Now the time has come to fight once again.

The BJP is indulging in horse trading; they are buying off politicians

The BJP is after Bangla because we are putting up resistance against them. I am ready to go to jail but will not give in to the BJP’s demands

There is a tough fight going on, and more is to come. I exhort you all, the students, to fight for two more years, and then Bangla will fight for you for the next 50 years

Regarding Kashmir, we never said that you cannot take a decision, but should have taken it after consultation with everybody. You have forced the decision on Kashmir on everyone.

You learnt about Goddess Durga from us, and now you are using the issue of worshipping Durga against us. We worship all gods and goddesses. You worship the evil Ravana

You try to decide who will eat what and who will wear what

IAS officers are leaving their jobs because of the way the BJP is running the country

After independence, Mahatma Gandhi sat in protest in Beleghata. Vidyasagar, who fought for the remarriage of widows and who wrote books to teach us our language, was from Bangla

This year is Mahatma Gandhi’150th birth anniversary, Vidyasagar’s 200th birth anniversary and the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre’s 100th anniversary

I will request Partha Chatterjee to organise celebrations of these anniversaries in colleges across the State

We should never forget history. The BJP is trying to change history

Our forebears fought for freedom. The people who ultimately went on to form the BJP and who influenced many to join the latter, on the other hand, supported the British, and not the freedom fighters

On Nov 14 and 15, we will organise interactive sessions with all the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad units from all colleges and universities, interactive sessions with college and university teachers too

Student leaders of the future will come out of those sessions. I will select people who have the potential to stand up strongly to the BJP. I will create the next level of leadership from among those students across the districts

I want people who will wholeheartedly work with me. I want a list of such people, and I will work with them

The leadership I will create will scare the BJP, with their evil intentions, to keep away from Bangla for the next 50 years

From 12 universities in 2011 we have set up 38 universities. We have set up 50 colleges. We give scholarships to all female students through the Kanyashree Scheme and to everyone else through the Swami Vivekananda Merit-cum-Means Scholarship Scheme. Through the Sikshashree Scheme, we give scholarships to students belonging to SC and ST communities

Unemployment in the country is at a 45-year high, while we in Bangla have decreased unemployment by 40 per cent

We still give pension to State Government employees, something which others have stopped giving; and this despite the huge debt we have

For the last 13 days, we are leading a hunger strike against the Centre’s decision to divest from 42 PSUs, which will lead to large-scale employment. I request all of you to go meet the protesters after this rally gets over to give them encouragement and the strength to carry on with their struggle

We are beside all workers of all PSUs, here and elsewhere

The BJP Government does not even want us to change the name of our State. They can’t tolerate even the name of our State. Actually they can’t tolerate our intelligence, our ability to stand up against their atrocities

They are trying to crush our bones, crush our strengths. But they won’t succeed

This is political vendetta. The BJP is demanding cut money in exchange for giving houses through their schemes

You are concerned about the prices of diamonds, and not potatoes because you are not concerned about the poor of the country,

Where did you get so much money that you spent during the general elections?

The Centre spent so much money on the election yet is not able to give rations for the poor

I will create a core group for organising the November 14 and 15 interactions..

You should be proud of Bangla. Always remember, this is the land of your dreams, the land of your purposes

Break down all the walls that are trying to crush your dreams. Sing the song of life, sing the song of victory

RBI cash transfer to govt increases financial risk for nation

The Trinamool Congress Government has expressed grave concerns over the huge transfer of cash reserves from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to the Central Government.

The State Finance Minister, Dr Amit Mitra said yesterday in the Assembly that the Rs 1.76 lakh crore transferred from dividend and surplus reserves has increased the financial risk of the country, suffering already as it is due to the massive mismanagement of the economy by the BJP-led government.

Contrary to the general condition of the country, he said, Bangla was faring much better, its GDP growth rate in 2018-19 being the highest among all the States.

He said two past governors of the RBI have spoken on the issue of transfer of cash reserves. It is a question of the RBI’s autonomy, which is under a question mark now. There should be a discussion on this topic. This decision will not only affect the Central Government but also all the State governments.

Explaining the reasons behind the superior performance of Bangla among the general gloom, he said that because the State Government increased the planned expenditure and capital expenditure, and because private investments are pouring in as a result of the industrial policy of the State, there has been a rise in the GDP.

The planned expenditure was increased from Rs 57,779 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 71,113 crore in 2018-19, which is an increase of 23 per cent, while the capital expenditure was increased from Rs 19,085 crore in 2017-18 to Rs 23,787 crore in 2018-19, an increase of 25 per cent.

Nabadwip and Cooch Behar given heritage status

The towns of Nabadwip and Cooch Behar have been officially given heritage status by the State Government. The process was in the works for the last few months, and finally, recently, the announcement was officially made.

The decision regarding giving the status of heritage town has been taken by the State Government after detailed studies of the places by teams of multi-disciplinary experts from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur and the Indian Institute of Science and Technology, Shibpur.

Long and storied history

Both towns have a lot of history and culture entwined with them. Nabadwip is the birthplace of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, the 16th-century proponent of Gaudiya Vaishnavism.

Cooch Behar is well-known as the capital of the formerly princely state of the same name, and the royal palace there draws a lot of tourists. It is also famous as the site of a famous Ras Mela at the Madan Mohan Bari temple grounds.

The State Heritage Commission has brought out a detailed list of the heritage structures in the two towns. Nabadwip has 86 such structures and Cooch Behar has 155.

Preserving heritage

Being a heritage town comes with several restrictions aimed at preserving the heritage value of the place and keeping the place beautiful to draw tourists. And arrival of more tourists would naturally open up a lot of economic opportunities.

As part of the rules, putting up advertisement hoardings in and around the heritage structures is banned. There are strict rules regarding the sale, lease and renovation of properties and setting them up as lodges. Applications need to be sent to the relevant municipality or zilla parishad, or even to the State Heritage Commission, if required.

Bengalathon 2019: Focus on senior citizen support

The third edition of the highly popular annual hackathon organised by the State Information Technology and Electronics (IT&E) Department, Bengalathon, was launched yesterday, that is, August 15.

The focus this year is on harnessing technology for elderly care, said a senior official of the IT&E Department.

Innovative ideas are also being invited in the areas of face recognition, solid waste management, road safety, health, citizen feedback, water quality monitoring, smart water metering, soil productivity, quick accident response and open data platform.

An example of elderly care using technology is the app-based digital visitor control system that HIDCO is setting up at Snehodiya, the senior citizen’s home in New Town. This will enable security guards at the gate to monitor the entry and exit of all visitors electronically and notify the facility manager or resident by SMS.

Bengalathon is an India-wide competition meant to recognise and promote innovative ideas on tech-based interventions for a better life. Through this competition, the State Government is trying to position Bangla as the best in using emerging technologies to provide solutions for real-life challenges.

TiE, a non-profit organisation, helps in linking the winners to global enterprises, for funding and further technical support.

Mala Roy speaks on the incidents of suicide attempts in Kolkata Metro

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Hon’ble Speaker Sir, as you all know that Kolkata Metro started its operation in 1984 and is India’s oldest Metro service. During this period of time we have experienced many suicides and suicide attempts in the Metro premises.

A larger portion of the Kolkata Metro runs through our constituencies Kolkata Dakshin, Kolkata Uttar and Jadavpur etc. So, I would like to request the minister to look into this matter very seriously and take up immediate steps to introduce platform-screen doors in all Kolkata Metro stations to enhance the safety and security of the people.

Thank you.

Prasun Banerjee speaks on the need for alleviating traffic jams at several level crossings in his constituency

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Thank you Sir for the giving time to me to speak. Sir, I have been elected from the Howrah parliamentary constituency in West Bengal. Sir, I draw the kind attention of the Railway Minister through you that in spite of several attempts, South Eastern Railway authorities did not provide three railway crossings; number one Baksara railway crossing gate, L/06, number two Jaynagar level crossing S/S01 and lastly much more important Bator gate level crossing number SS 02 which is situated at having busy track and main lines.

Sir, I am demanding, through you, to provide suitable alternative in these three level crossings as the entire Baskara area undergoes daily pain due to the wastage of time at these crossings, when they go about their daily lives, schools, colleges and offices. This is not out of point to mention that on several occasions patients have died in ambulances, while waiting at these crossings.

Sir, my request is that the Railway Minister must look into the issue as quick as possible.
