The private company that was given permit to facilitate the service decided to add more cars to its fleet before the Puja.

The state Transport Minister, had inaugurated the service on October 28. Within the past few days, all the cars have been booked and curiosity among people about the service has gone up.

The service was launched with a fleet of 15 cars of different classes. But with all the cars being booked from Shasthi onwards, the service provider has decided to add another 10 cars to their fleet.

Bengal Transport Dept ties up with Google to help commuters

Commuters can now plan their trip within Kolkata on Google maps on phone, thanks to State Transport Department. With all data of routes under State Transport utilities available on Google, one can touch and select the public transport bus or tram services one wants to avail to reach their destination.

The map suggests the best route to reach one’s destination, giving citizens a respite from rogue taxi or auto drivers who swindle passengers by taking winding routes to take them to their destinations. Now, one needs to put the origin and destination on the map. Google map will give options to reach the destination – multiple routes under different modes of transport on real-time basis. Google will also give the approximate time to be taken by each mode of transport.

For a tourist, the system will come very handy to reach any place of interest from any point of the city. For an office-goer, it will be only a matter of few seconds to know the route he must take to reach his or her office. Eventually , one can also locate the bus he needs to catch on the map.

Transport dept introduces Intelligent Transport System

The state transport minister inaugurated the vehicle tracking system and automated fare collection system on Friday. The introduction of the vehicle tracking system will help in monitoring movement of a bus from the command and control centre set up in the office building of CSTC.

The introduction of automated fare collection system at all the eleven depots will help in real time monitoring of revenue collection. From now onwards, fare collection will be done using Electronic Ticketing Machine (ETM). Conductors in buses will be carrying an ETM connected through GPRS with the control room.

Thus an operator sitting in the control room will get real time statics on the exact count of passengers travelling in a bus at a time as well as number of tickets issued in every trip. The same system will be implemented in buses run by other transport corporations as well for “strong vigilance on the fare collection process.

Smart cards will also be introduced for commuters soon. A passenger carrying a smart card just needs to press his or her card on the ETM with the conductor to get a ticket. Passengers who will not be having a smart card will get an ETM generated ticket after paying the fare in cash.

After introducing online tracking system for buses run by Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC), the state transport department is all set to introduce biometric attendance recording system in all its offices and depots with an objective to provide better service to people.

London-style transport coming to Kolkata soon

The London trip has inspired the Mamata Banerjee government to revolutionize public transport in Kolkata, starting with an Oyster-card type multi-access system.

The planned ‘Kolkata Transport Card’ (KTC) will be valid on all modes of mass transport in the city — private and state bus, tram, ferry and the Metro.

The transport department has already started working on the ‘integrated fare management and ticketing system’ that will champion public transport and ease congestion.

Chief minister Mamata Banerjee has put this on her priority list and the first technology exploration meeting will be held at Netaji Indoor Stadium at 5 pm on Friday.

The transport department is exploring the PPP mode with a revenue sharing model, say sources.

What is KTC?

  • The KTC would be a credit-card-sized stored value smartcard that can hold single tickets or period tickets.
  • Unlike London, where you have to buy separate Oyster cards for river transport and land transport, KTC will be valid for all modes of travel, said an official.
  • Like the Metro smartcard, passengers will have to touch it on an electronic reader while entering and leaving a bus, tram or ferry in order to validate a journey.
  • Cards can be topped-up by cash payment or online. The transport department aims to encourage its use by offering some free rides.
  • It will reduce the number of transactions at ticket counters and do away with paper tickets.
  • Since people won’t have to queue up for tickets, the card will lead to faster dispersal of commuters.
  • It will also improve revenue transparency as the fare automatically goes through a payment gateway and gets credited in the bus/tram/ferry-operator’s account.
  • It will also help you track bus arrival times through the same technology used by app-cabs now.

Mayor promises taxi stands across Kolkata soon

Mayor Sovan Chatterjee has promised a taxi stand at every locality in Kolkata soon.

“Mamata Baner jee has asked us – Kolkata Municipal Corporation and Kolkata Police – to initiate efforts to ensure a taxi stand/bay at every nook and corner of the city. I have asked my officials and Kolkata Police to submit a report after joint inspection and survey of all parking areas in the city and make necessary arrangements to allow taxis to be parked in all such areas,” the Mayor told reporters on Tuesday after a high-level meeting at civic headquarters with police officials.

Debashis Kumar, member, mayor-in-council (parking, parks & squares, sports, advertisement) said KMC would submit Kolkata Police its survey report on parking lots across the city on Wednesday and a joint inspection, if required would be initiated to ensure space of parking taxis.

Apart from providing spaces for taxis in the parking lots, KMC would also initiate efforts to increase the number of private vehicles parked in the same parking area.

KMC is also initiating efforts to add new stretches of parking areas in the city. “With growing numbers of cars plying the streets of Kolkata the number of parking spaces too need to be increased and we are working on it,” the MMiC said.

GPS monitoring for CSTC Buses

The new CSTC buses will now be monitored by GPS. Out of 632 new buses, 234 are air-conditioned and the remaining 129 will be on the road by end of this month. CSTC is now running its buses in 29 routes. Now, for all these buses, software is being created for better turnaround time and to provide prompt and better service to the commuters.

Through this GPS based software, the CSTC officials will be able to monitor the buses in lag time. All maintenance related jobs, details of refuelling, speed and time taken and route monitoring can be scrutinized closely with the help of this technology.

In the near future a similar GPS related service will also be extended to the commuters.

CSTC is also set to launch ‘smart-card’ for the passengers to solve their problem of paying change every time they purchase tickets.

Last but not the least, after all these years of loss, CSTC has finally turned around and now is booking profit from June last year of about Rs One Crore per month. The no of commuter is expected to rise during summer months as more and more travellers prefer air-conditioned journeys.
