Fish farming in south Bengal gets a boost

The West Bengal Fisheries Department is going to farm boroli fish in ponds of South Bengal. The small-sized boroli, because of its taste, is regarded as the ‘king of fish’ in North Bengal, and is sold at Rs 400 a kg. Fish lovers of South Bengal often lament its unavailability there.

According to the Minister for Fisheries, Chandranath Singha, “After a person successfully cultivated boroli fish in his pond in Cooch Behar, we are planning to cultivate it in South Bengal too and plans in this regard are being chalked out.”

In North Bengal, boroli is a very popular fish and is found in most of the rivers. Tourists from the plains search for it when they visit North Bengal and it is a compulsion of every eatery owner in North Bengal to include the fish in their menus; some even display it at their eateries. The fish is found in the districts of Jalpaiguri (Siliguri is a big market), Cooch Behar and Alipurduar.

Work on to make Digha more attractive tourist destination: WB CM

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Tuesday said that the beach town Digha and its surrounding areas would soon appear as beautiful tourist attraction with the agencies working on it to give it a shape.

WB CM, who arrived here on Monday evening, walked along the beach, visited various spots and held an administrative meeting today with the officials in the district and local civic bodies to discuss about the development of this beach town as part of the coastal area development plan.

The chief minister also launched the helicopter service from Digha to Kolkata today before returning to Kolkata by helicopter.

The new helipad at Digha would allow chopper rides from Kolkata to Digha. Alongside a chopper ride, there would also be a ropeway launched at Amarbati Park in Digha for tourists.

The ropeway will move along the Lake in Amarabati Park. The length of the ropeway has been estimated to be of 150 to 200 meters and tourists would also be able to get a larger view of Digha from the ropeway.

The Government is in touch with the coastal zone authorities to work out the modalities of the bigger ropeway project, which would move over the beach between Old and New Digha.

The state government has been working to develop the coastal areas of Digha, Shankarpur, Tajpur and Mandarmani as attractive tourist destinations.

The chief minister also directed the officials in the district and local civic bodies to ensure that the roads were maintained, beaches kept clean, beautification schemes undertaken and solid waste management programme kept in place.

The Digha-Shankarpur Development Authority (DSDA) has already taken up overall civic infrastructure development of the entire area.

Foreign bloggers and travel writers soak in four-day festive spirit

They came not knowing what to expect. They returned overwhelmed.Travel writers, bloggers and documentary filmmakers from United States, Canada, France, Spain, Portugal and Argentina, arrived in Kolkata on the eve of Durga Puja and experienced all facets of the festival during their week-long stay.

From watching artisans craft clay idols to observing artists create gigantic pandals on streets, soaking in the festive spirit to watching the immersion of the idols, the group of 26 was privy to the many shades of one of India’s biggest festivals.

Soaking in the festivities

“That a festival celebrated on such a grand scale is still relatively unknown to the west is unthinkable. I believe Durga Puja can attract hordes of western visitors because it is a truly unique experience, very different from what one can experience back home,“ said Dominick A Merle, co-founder of International Food, Wine & Travel Writers Association and International Travel Writers Alliance. Merle intends to write about Durga Puja when he is back home, so the world knows what it has been missing.

French journalist and travel writer Julie Olagnol is convinced Durga Puja can become one of the biggest attractions for western tourists. “In my home town Lyon, we have a light festival for four days in December. I remember how it was a small affair when I was a child and how it evolved into a huge event that now attracts tourists from all over the world. I believe that it will be the same for Durga Puja, maybe even bigger, because this seems to be the world’s biggest open art gallery ,“ she said.

A unique experience

The team that did rounds of several Pujas, including Sovabazar Rajbari, loved the intricate artwork at 41 Palli and found the girl child theme at Kashi Bose Lane the most interesting. If the variety of art and craft on display impressed them, it was the spirit of the people that took their breath away .

“Apart from the religious and spiritual meaning that the festival holds for Bengalis, Durga Puja appears to bring people together. During a previous visit to the city, I had stayed with a Muslim family and they told me how much Durga Puja meant to them. They didn’t follow the religion, but contributed to it in a myriad ways. I learned that thousands earn their livelihood from crafting the decorations, which at times take up to a year,“ said Olagnol.

Wowed by Kolkata’s spirit

Merle too was struck by the harmony during the festival. “Durga Puga, I discovered, is a religious festival with added parts of party, passion and peace, where Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jews and even atheists can put aside their differences for four days of festivities,“ he said.

Among his unforgettable moments were visiting the Dominique Lapierre Home for handicapped, abused, abandoned or lost children and watching them perform at their own Puja and seeing a rickshaw-puller tie his vehicle to a pole and join a long queue to a pandal.

The immersion touched a chord with Olagnol. “I’ve realized what ephemeral means. People were sad after the end of the festival, in which they had put in so much work. Yet all of this will return next year with even greater vigour and splendour,“ she added.

WB CM names Gajoldoba tourist hotspot ‘Bhorer Aalo’

The state government is setting up a tourist hotspot at Gajoldoba in North Bengal to be named ‘Bhorer Aalo’.

The spot, identified by Mamata Banerjee during her election campaign in 2011, is located near Teesta Barrage in Jalpaiguri district. The seven reserve forests are an hour’s drive from there.

Sprawling over 210 acres of government land, the spot is encircled by the Teesta barrage catchment on one side and a bird sanctuary on the other where over 15,000 birds come annually.

“For the last two years, we have been developing the infrastructure of the area with PWD constructing three connecting roads of 31 km, 9 km and 7 km to the spot. A power sub-station has been set up and two huge water tanks are there,” Dr Amit Mitra, State Finance Minister, told reporters.

Several star category hotels, including three, four and five star, would come up along with two budget hotels for the middle class. A nine-hole golf course, too, would come up.

“We would set up a golf training centre and small cottages at the golf course,” Mitra added.

Sterling Holiday Resorts, in joint venture with Thomas Cook, had won the bid for the three-star hotel, while Summit Group, which owns Darjeeling’s Swiss Hotel and Seal Group, that promotes tea tourism in North Bengal, had won bids for two budget hotels.

“One lakh tourists can be served by these three hotels annually and around 1,000 people would get job opportunities,” the finance minister said.

The government would be earning Rs 4.5 crore as annual lease rental and Rs 3.5-4 crore as luxury tax from these hotels.

A crafts and ayurveda village, too, are under construction in the area, Dr Mitra added.
