Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while replying to questions during a press conference at Nabanna, spoke on the riot which broke out in Baduria, Basirhat.

We support and respect social networks. They help to educate people on many things.

However, the ruling party at the Centre has an agenda – sometimes it is beating people in the name of ‘gau raksha’, sometimes it is about creating hate groups on Facebook by spreading rumours and creating trouble. An example is the incident which took place yesterday.

Some fake pictures are being put up, which have no relation with what has actually happened.

I would like to tell the people who are indulging in these that they are not doing the right thing.

The man who did this was arrested by the police. Logically, the situation should have been under control. But what we saw was that another group did something to flare up the situation into a communal issue.

We couldn’t sleep the whole night. I regret to say that this trouble between a group of HIndus and a group of Muslims, resulting from a Facebook post, is very regretful.

How many Facebook and Twitter posts can you stop? Lakhs and lakhs of people post on Facebook. If a certain Facebook post can set up a riot, then there cannot be a worse situation for the country.

I totally condemn the incident. Even after arresting the man, the way a group of people set up a blockade and created chaos, I am sure that they are not really acting in favour of the state.

I do not want to create any communal tension. I would appeal to both the groups to not to create communal tension. If the BJP is instigating you, why should you fall into the trap?

BJP is intent on instigation. But if this can lead to tension anywhere, I would not hold back in taking action.

As long as I am in this chair, all are equal. I respect all communities. Like the BJP, I do not set one community against the other. Be it Hindu or Muslim, if anything happens to any community, it would affect me.

Some religious leaders are igniting situations and burning property in exchange for money. Do not play with fire. Those destroying property will have to pay for it. Those fomenting trouble will not be pardoned. We have a list of all such people.

Today, the Governor has said a lot of things. I have been highly insulted.

I have a lot of respect for the Governor, which is a constitutional post. He has to work as per the Constitution, just as I have to.

I have not come to power because of the kindness of the Governor. I have been elected by the people. The Governor is nominated by the Central Government. The way he spoke today, favouring the BJP while humiliating me is very bad.

The community that has started all this trouble yesterday, I must tell them that we have had to hear a lot of things today. A person was arrested by the police after what he posted on Facebook. So where is my fault in this? Where is my government’s fault?

The Maa-Mati-Manush Government has given a lot of protection to you. But if you think that you can target me on the basis of partiality, then remember, Mamata Banerjee is not in favour of any one person or community – she is in favour of the people.

I have told the Honourable Governor that you cannot talk to me like this. The way the Governor is speaking, it seems that the BJP block president is speaking.

Why should such a thing happen. We are not his servants. I am occupying this post because the people have voted me to run this government, I am not here because of any particular group – neither the BJP, nor the CPI(M), nor the Congress. If the people don’t want me, I will leave this post.

After this insult, I had myself thought that I would resign. I have never been insulted in this way in my whole life.

The Governor cannot threaten me. He has threatened me today after calling me on my phone.

He is trying to teach me law and order. Why should he take only one side? Why can’t he be impartial?

These days, whenever something happens, the BJP goes and meets the Governor and hands him a paper, and then he starts saying whatever comes to his mind.

He should understand the fact that he is a nominated person. His is a constitutional position, and so I respect him. But at the same time, he should maintain his self-respect too.

The police are also to blame in some cases. Whatever I do, I do impartially. I have been telling the police from yesterday to control this. They should have immediately blocked the Facebook account.

But how many accounts can you block? This is being done by design, these posts have become a phenomenon. First they are putting up a story on Facebook, then fomenting trouble based on that.

I would say, why don’t the others counter the posts rather than becoming embroiled in the riots?

If the police had opened fire, many would have been killed. So they cannot do that. My aim is to make the communities understand rather than to open fire and harm people. That is why I am being patient. But let no one take my patience to be my weakness.

I am sternly telling the leaders of both the communities – we have had to hear a lot of things because of you. Do not indulge in such things.

I am not here just to be a chief minister. This is a chair of the people. I will not tolerate such goondaism. And I would appeal to the Governor not to behave like this.

I am in politics right from my younger days. I cannot tolerate the fact that now I have to hear such insults.

I’m really sorry if I have hurt anybody because of what I said. I apologise for that. But my conscience was extremely hurt today. I have not sat on this chair just for the sake of it. I work hard to accomplish whatever I can.

I do not respect religious leaders who can be swayed by such Facebook posts. I respect institutions like the Ramakrishna Mission and the Bharat Sevashram Sangha who work with responsibility. I do not respect the small fry who create such chaos in lieu of money. I condemn such people, like the person who posted on Facebook in the name of Hindu unity (‘samhati’) and Bajrang Dal. The BJP has such people in their ranks. Their leaders are indulging in this – it would be very evident if one checks their Facebook posts.

Some leaders are destroying the country and then going abroad to talk of unity. They are setting fire to the amity between communities and religions, and then indulging in sweet talk on religious unity in foreign lands.

Such things must be stopped; we will not tolerate such things. We do politics with dedication. We don’t indulge in dirty politics, our politics is for the good of the people.

Whatever decision I take next would depend on the situation. This is a very serious issue and I will handle it will utmost seriousness.

 

 

রাজ্যপালের নিরপেক্ষ থাকা উচিতঃ মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়

আজ নবান্নে মন্ত্রীসভার বৈঠকের পর সাংবাদিকদের মুখোমুখি হন মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। সেখানে বসিরহাটের প্রসঙ্গে সাংবাদিকদের প্রশ্নের উত্তরে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্ককে আমরা support করি, respect করি। সোশ্যাল নেটওয়ার্ক অনেককে অনেক কিছু জানতে শেখায়। কিন্তু কেন্দ্রের শাসকদলের একটা agenda আছে। তাদের agenda হল কখনো গোরক্ষার নামে পিটিয়ে মারা, কখনো একটা hatred group তৈরি করে উল্টোপাল্টা ফেসবুকে দিয়ে দাঙ্গা লাগানো।

কালকের যে ঘটনা ঘটেছে এরকমই দাঙ্গা এবং কিছু মিথ্যে মিথ্যে ছবি দেওয়া হচ্ছে যেগুলোর সাথে বাস্তবের কোন সম্পর্ক নেই। কিন্তু তাও আমি বলব যারা এগুলো করছেন তারা ঠিক করছেন না। যে ছেলেটি করেছে তাকে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পুলিশ গ্রেফতার করেছে। গ্রেফতার হওয়ার পর এটা কন্ট্রোল হয়ে যাওয়া উচিত ছিল। একটা ঘটনা ঘটেছে,অভিযোগ এসেছে, অভিযোগের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে পুলিশ action নিয়েছে।

কিন্তু আমরা আজ লক্ষ করলাম আর একটা গ্রুপ গিয়ে communally এটা flare up করেছে। কাল সারা রাত ঘুমোতে পারিনি।

খুব দুঃখের সাথে বলছি দিন রাত এত কাজ করার পরেও এই দুটো গ্রুপের মধ্যে কখনো হিন্দু কখনো মুসলমানের মধ্যে ফেসবুক থেকে একটা সাম্প্রদায়িক দাঙ্গা লাগিয়ে দিচ্ছে। কটা ফেসবুক, টুইটার আপনি আটকাবেন? লক্ষ লক্ষ লোক ফেসবুক করছে। ফেসবুকের একটা কথা থেকে যদি দাঙ্গা লাগাতে হয় তাহলে এর থেকে দুঃখজনক দিন আর আসবে না। আমি এটাকে totally condemn করি।

ছেলেটিকে গ্রেফতার করার পরেও যে পক্ষ কাল সকাল থেকে একটা গ্রুপ করে রাস্তা ব্লক করেছে তারা মোটেই রাজ্যের পক্ষে বলে আমার মনে হয় না। আমি communal tension ছড়াতে চাই না। আমি দু পক্ষের কাছেই আবেদন করব দাঙ্গা নিয়ে কেউ রাজনীতি করবেন না। বিজেপি প্ররোচনা দিচ্ছে বলে আপনারা সেই প্ররোচনায় পা দেবেন কেন? বিজেপি তো প্ররোচনা দেওয়ার জন্যই আছে।কিন্তু মনে রাখবেন বিজেপির এই প্ররোচনায় যদি অন্যের ঘরে আগুন জ্বলে আমি কিন্তু কাউকে ছেড়ে কথা বলব না।

আমি যখন এই চেয়ারে বসে আছি আমার কাছে all are equal. আমি কোন community করি না। আমি all community করি। আমি বিজেপির মত একটা communityর সাথে আর একটা community র আগুন জ্বালাই না। হিন্দুর গায়ে লাগলেও আমার গায়ে জ্বালা লাগবে, মুসলমানের গায়ে লাগলেও আমার গায়ে জ্বালা লাগবে। কয়েকজন ধর্মীয় নেতা টাকার বিনিময়ে আগুন জ্বালাচ্ছে। আগুন নিয়ে খেলবেন না। যে আগুন লাগাচ্ছে তাকেই টাকা দিতে হবে, আমার কাছে সব লিস্ট আছে, যে দাঙ্গা লাগাচ্ছে তাকেও ছাড়া হবে না। 

আজ আমায় Governor অনেক বড় বড় কথা বলেছেন।আজ আমি খুব অসম্মানিত হয়েছি। গভর্নর সাংবিধানিক পোস্ট। সংবিধান মেনে তাঁকে কাজ করতে হয়। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী ও সাংবিধানিক পোস্ট। আমি Governor এর দয়ায় এখানে ক্ষমতায় আসিনি, আমি মানুষের mandate এ ক্ষমতায় এসেছি। I am elected by the people. Governor nominated by the central government.

যে ভাষায় উনি আজ বিজেপির পক্ষ নিয়ে আমাকে অসম্মানিত অপমানিত করেছেন…

যে community এটা কাল থেকে শুরু করেছে আমি তাদের বলব আপনাদের জন্য আমাদের অনেক কথা শুনতে হয়েছে। কেউ একটা ফেসবুকে দিয়েছে পুলিশ গ্রেফতার করেছে, তাঁর জন্য আমার দোষ টা কোথায়? আমার সরকারের দোষ কোথায়?

মা মাটি মানুষের সরকার আপনাদের অনেক protection দিয়েছে, দিচ্ছে। তারপরেও যদি আপনারা মনে করেন আমার বুকে শেল মারবেন তাহলে জেনে রাখবেন মমতা ব্যানারজি কিন্তু কারও পক্ষে নয়, মানুষের পক্ষে।

আমি মাননীয় রাজ্যপালকে বলেছি আপনারা আমার সাথে এভাবে কথা বলতে পারেন না। রাজ্যপাল কথা বলছেন যেন মনে হচ্ছে বিজেপির ব্লক সভাপতি কথা বলছেন। কেন হবে এটা? আমরা কেউ চাকর বাকর নই। I am sorry. আমি এখানে সরকার চালাই, মানুষ আমায় এখানে পাঠিয়েছে বলে। আমি কারো দয়ায় আসিনি। আমি বিজেপি- সিপিএম-কংগ্রেসের দয়ায় আসিনি। আমি মানুষের দয়ায় এখানে এসেছি। মানুষ যদি চায় আমি চলে যাব।

আজকে অপমান করার পর আমি নিজেও ভেবেছিলাম আমি ছেড়ে দেব। এত অপমানিত আমি জীবনে হইনি। Governor আমাকে threat করতে পারে না। উনি আজ আমায় threat করেছেন। আমার ফোনে ফোন করে আমায় threat করেছেন। উনি আমাকে law and order দেখাচ্ছেন। উনি কেন একটা পক্ষ নেবেন? দুটো পক্ষ নিতে পারেন না?

আজ যে কোনো একটা ছোট ঘটনা ঘটলে বিজেপির লোকেরা গিয়ে ওনাকে একটা কাগজ দিয়ে আসেন, উনি যা ইচ্ছে তাই বলে বেড়ান। ওনার
বোঝা উচিত he is a nominated person. I respect him. He should maintain his respect also. পুলিশেরও কোথাও কোথাও ভুল আছে। আমি যখন যেটা করি impartially করি।

আমি তো বলি ফেসবুকে যদি কেউ কিছু বলেতুমি তার পাল্টা টা বল, তুমি সেটা কাউন্টার কর। কাউন্টার না করে তুমি কেন রাস্তায় নেমেছ? এবং কাল থেকে যারা এ কাজটা করেছে তাদের বারবার বোঝানো হয়েছে।

পুলিশ গুলি চালালে ১০০ জন মারা যেত। ৫ জন ১০ জন লোককে কন্ট্রোল করা যায়। যদি দুটি কমিউনিটি মিলে এক জায়গায় বসে থাকে
সেখানে গুলি চালাতে গেলে আমার ২০০ লোক মরে যাবে। কোনটা আমার কাছে কাম্য? আপাতত বুঝিয়ে শান্ত করা নাকি গুলি চালিয়ে দেওয়া? তাই আমার সময় লাগছে।আমার ধৈর্য যেন কেউ দুর্বলতা না ভাবে। আমি both কমিউনিটির নেতাদের কাছে বলছি আপনাদেরজন্য আমাদের অনেক কথা শুনতে হয়েছে। আমি কিন্তু মুখ্যমন্ত্রীত্ব করতে এই চেয়ারে আসিনি। আমি এই চেয়ারটাকে মানি না। আমি মানুষের চেয়ার মানি। আমার ছেড়ে দিতে এক সেকেন্ড লাগবে। আমি এসব hooliganism বরদাস্ত করব না আর রাজ্যপালের কাছে আমার আবেদন থাকবে dont behave like this. This is very insulting and humiliating.

আমি ১৩-১৪ বছর বয়স থেকে রাজনীতি করি, আজ এখানে এসে আমায় এত বড় বড় অসম্মানজনক কথা শুনতে হবে? I am really sorry. কিন্তু আজ আমার মনে খুব লেগেছে, বিবেকে আঘাত লেগেছে। আমি এখানে বসে থাকার জন্য আসিনি, আমি খেটে কাজ করি। ফেসবুকে একটা কমেন্ট থেকে যারা দাঙ্গা লাগায় সেই সব ধর্মীয় নেতাদের আমি ঘৃণা করি। আমি এইরকম মানসিকতাকে ধিক্কার জানাই।

আমি সম্মান জানাই রামকৃষ্ণ মিশন, ভারত সেবাশ্রমকে, কারণ তারা দায়িত্ব নিয়ে কাজ করে।

(কিছু নেতা) দেশকে নষ্ট করে দিয়ে বিদেশের মাটিতে ঐক্যের কথা বলছে। দেশটাকে পুরো ভেঙে দিয়ে, সব community তে আগুন লাগিয়ে দিয়ে, বাইরে গিয়ে মিষ্টি মিষ্টি কথা বলছে। বিদেশের মধ্যে ঐক্য চান আর দেশের মধ্যে আগুন চান। It must be stopped. না হলে আমাদের মত লোকেরা এসব জিনিস সহ্য করবে না। আমরা dedication নিয়ে রাজনীতি করি। সব politician খারাপ নয়। আমরা মানুষের রাজনীতি করি। এরপর আমি পরিস্থিতি দেখে সিদ্ধান্ত নেব।

Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has started a local outdoor monsoon forecast service. It was inaugurated last Friday by Mayor Sovan Chatterjee.

As a part of that, seven LED monopoles have been placed at seven strategic locations across the city – at Mallick Bazar, at the Park Circus seven-point crossing (in front of Islamia Hospital), in front of the National Library, near the Tollygunge metro station, beside E-Mall, on Park Street (in front of Allen Park) and in Kankurgachhi.

Among the information to be provided on the LED screens would be the day’s current temperature, amount of rainfall that has fallen, predictions on waterlogging and the timings of low and high tides in the Hooghly.

Another service to be provided by KMC, through the website www.weatherkolkata.in, is prediction of water-logging by compiling data from the Palmer Bridge, Ballygunge and Dhapa pumping stations, gathered between the last 15 minutes to the past 24 hours.
