The State Government has decided to run extra buses during Durga Puja for the convenience of commuters. Nearly 500 extra buses will be run daily during the festive season. Enough buses will be made available to commuters from afternoon till evening in Kolkata and suburbs. Even the night bus service will be augmented.

The State Transport Department will run 1200 buses daily from Chaturthi till Nabami. A control room will also be set up to help commuters in distress. Apart from metro and railway stations, shuttle services will be set up at major intersections of the city.

Shuttle services will be run on Garia-Gariahat, Howrah-Sealdah, Shyambazar-Barrackpore, Karunamoyee-Sealdah, Tollygunge-Thakurpukur, Tollygunge-Behala routes, among others. Trams will be run at night too.

It may be mentioned that the department has launched a special ‘all day ticket’ for commuters for the festive season. Valid for 24 hours, this ticket will enable commuters to undertale any number of rides on buses, trams, vessels that day from Barrackpore-Barasat in the north to Thakurpurkur-Baruipur in the south and Newtown in the east till Howrah in the west. Tickets will be valid on vessel rides between Ariadaha to Millennium Park jetties.

Biswa Bangla logo will now be the of Calcutta State Transport Corporation (CSTC), which has been renamed West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC), the unified entity of three state transport undertakings — CSTC, Calcutta Tram Corporation (CTC) and West Bengal Surface Transport Corporation (WBSTC).

THe branding of unified STUs as WBTC has already started. All buses, trams and vessels will carry this symbol. The process of sharing logistics — like depot and maintenance has also started. This will help in utilizing the workforce far more efficiently to provide better and consistent services.

Already, depots like Santragachhi, airport, Nabanna, Howrah, Sealdah and Joka are being shared among buses on the basis of routes. Gradually, all other depots will follow suit. This will help to rationalize manpower. Like CTC may lack engineers, but WBSTC has them in abundance. So the shortage can be met effectively, now. The three corporations together have over 2,500 buses, 300 trams and over 100 vessels.

Route overlapping that caused unnecessary bleeding of the STUs can be done away with. According to transport officials, clear-cut routes and well-spaced-out timings needed to be worked out so that buses are evenly distributed and they get adequate passengers.

এবার থেকে বিশ্ব বাংলা লোগো থাকবে পশ্চিম বঙ্গ পরিবহন সংস্থার যানবাহনগুলিতে। কলকাতা রাষ্ট্রীয় পরিবহন সংস্থা, কলকাতা ট্রাম কোম্পানি ও পশ্চিমবঙ্গ ভূতল পরিবহন সংস্থাকে একজোট করে পশ্চিমবঙ্গ পরিবহন সংস্থা তৈরী করা হয়েছে।

সবকটি সংস্থা একছাতার তলায় এসে কাজ করা শুরু করে দিয়েছে। সব ধরনের পরিবহন মাধ্যমে এই লোগো থাকবে। ডিপো ও রক্ষণাবেক্ষণও ভাগাভাগি করে কাজ শুরু করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। এর ফলে উন্নত মানের পরিষেবা দেওয়া সম্ভব।

ইতিমধ্যেই সাঁতরাগাছি, বিমানবন্দর, নবান্ন, হাওড়া, শিয়ালদহ ও জোকার ডিপোগুলো রুট ভিত্তিক ভাগাভাগি করে কাজ শুরু করে দেওয়া হয়েছে। এর ফলে লোকবল ভালোভাবে ভাগাভাগি হবে। যেমন কলকাতা ট্রাম কোম্পানিতে ইঞ্জিনিয়ারের সংখ্যা কম থাকলেও পশ্চিম বঙ্গ পরিবহন সংস্থায় সেই সংখ্যাটি যথেষ্ট। এই তিন সংস্থা মিলিয়ে মোট ২৫০০ বাস, ৩০০ ট্রাম ও ১০০টি জাহাজ আছে।

একই রুটে অধিক বাস যাওয়ার ফলে যে অসুবিধা হচ্ছিল, সেটাও এবার কমবে। পরিবহন আধিকারিকরা বলেছেন, নির্দিষ্ট রুট ও নির্দিষ্ট সময়ের ব্যাবধানের ফলে বাসগুলি সমানভাবে বণ্টন হবে ও যথেষ্ট যাত্রী পাওয়া যাবে।
