Giving much relief to potato cultivators, the state government has started procuring the staple food at the minimum support price from farmers in different potato cultivating areas.

It may be recalled that Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had extended all support so that farmers do not incur losses due to excessive production of potatoes. She had announced that the state government will buy potatoes at minimum support price from farmers for midday meals.

The process of procuring potatoes directly from farmers at minimum support price started on Sunday at areas including Tarakeswar, Balagarh, Polba and Dhaniakhali in Hooghly district which is the highest producer of potatoes in the state.

The state government has decided to buy a total of 28,000 metric tonne potato for midday meals. Potatoes will also be exported to Nepal and Bhutan. Some quantity of the staple food will also be sent to Assam and Odisha.

 

সহায়ক মূল্যে কৃষকদের থেকে আলু কিনছে রাজ্য

আলুচাষীদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়েছিলেন বাংলার মুখ্যমন্ত্রী। দিয়েছিলেন পাশে থাকার আশ্বাস। সেইমত পদক্ষেপ নিল সরকার। আলুচাষীদের কাছ থেকে শুরু হল সহায়ক মূল্যে আলু কেনার কাজ।

রবিবার হুগলির বলাগড়ে যান কলকাতার মিড ডে মিল বিভাগের আধিকারিকরা। সমবায় সমিতির মাধ্যমে চাষীদের কাছ থেকে আলু কেনা হয়।

ক’দিন আগে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী চাষীদের পাশে দাঁড়িয়ে ঘোষণা করেন, মিড ডে মিল সেন্টারের জন্য মাসে ২৮ হাজার মেট্রিক টন আলু লাগে। এই পরিমাণ আলু, সরাসরি চাষীদের থেকে, চার টাকা ষাট পয়সা কেজি দরে কিনবে সরকার।

এর পাশাপাশি, আলুর রপ্তানির জন্যও সরকার দেবে ভর্তুকি। রেলে কেজি পিছু পঞ্চাশ পয়সা এবং জাহাজে কেজি পিছু এক টাকা করে।

The Mamata Banerjee government will procure potatoes from farmers across the state.

“The government will directly purchase 28,000 tonnes from farmers at Rs 4.60 a kg for mid-day meal and Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS),“ the CM said on Tuesday.

The CM also announced a 50 paisa subsidy for every kilo of potato exported by railways and ship given the demand for Bengal potatoes in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh.

The government also said the government has provided soil health cards to 20 lakh farmers. “We test the soil to ascertain properties and give them to farmers so that they can choose the crops suitable for the soil of their land. This would also make optimum use of fertilizer and pesticides,“ the CM said.

 

আলু চাষিদের পাশে রাজ্য সরকার

আলু চাষিদের পাশে দাঁড়াতে উদ্যোগী হলো রাজ্য সরকার। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছেন যে এখন থেকে মিড ডে মিলের জন্য আলু সরাসরি কৃষকদের কাছ থেকে কিনবে সরকার। রাজ্যের বাইরে রপ্তানির ক্ষেত্রেও মিলবে সরকারি ভর্তুকি।

মিড ডে মিলের জন্য প্রয়োজনীয় আঠাশ হাজার মেট্রিক টন আলু সরাসরি কৃষকদের থেকে কিনে নেবে সরকার। সিদ্ধান্ত হয়েছে চার টাকা ষাট পয়সা কিলো দরে কেনা হবে এই আলু।

মাননীয়া মুখ্যমন্ত্রী আরও বলেন যে ২০ লক্ষ কৃষককে রাজ্যে ‘সয়েল হেলথ কার্ড’ দেওয়া হচ্ছে যার মাধ্যমে তারা মাটির গুণমান সম্বন্ধে অবগত হতে পারবেন। মাটি পরীক্ষা করে সেই মাটিতে কি কি চাষ করা যেতে পারে, এই তথ্যও পাওয়া যাবে এই কার্ডের মাধ্যমে।

Thank you very much Sir.

Potato growers in Bengal and some other States like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar are facing difficulties as their produce is sold at half the price. With the result they are incurring huge losses; they are not deriving any profit in spite of toiling in the farm to produce potatoes. There is an urgent need to provide subsidy to the potato growers as the Union Government extended subsidy to the rice growers.

To give an example how potato growers is undertaking hard times: 1 bigha of land = 1600 square yards; whatever they are spending they are not able earn profit. On the other hand they are losing Rs 2000 to Rs 10000. If efforts are not taken by the Central Government they would find it difficult to make both ends meet.

I would like to ask the Union Government to make measures to come to the rescue of the potato growers at this hour of despair and helplessness.
