Now, KMC to collect garbage four times a day

From August 15, Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) will introduce the system of collecting garbage during the evenings too. This will be a major step towards better solid waste management in the city.

With this routine in place, daily garbage collection will increase from three times to four.

KMC will set up three groups of people for each borough, who will keep an eye on garbage accumulation from 12 noon till 9 pm. Each group will have a supervisor. The groups will inform the Solid Waste Management Department of the corporation at which places garbage has accumulated and from where KMC’s vehicles may collect the same from.

Waste amounting to 4,500 metric tonnes is generated per day in Kolkata, which the KMC handles, while the total municipal waste generation in Bengal stands at 14,000 metric tonne per day.

The Bengal Government’s Solid Waste Management Rules 2016 categorises solid waste into six broad categories – industrial hazardous waste, healthcare or biomedical waste, solid waste (waste from houses, schools, offices, etc.), plastic waste, electronic or e-waste and construction or demolition waste. The Government is working upon classifying solid waste under three subcategories – biodegradable waste, recyclable waste and inert waste.

Haldia Petrochemicals has regained health: Amit Mitra

State Industry and Finance Minister Dr Amit Mitra Friday said health has returned to Haldia Petrochemicals Limited, which was going through a crisis sometimes back.

Speaking at Petrochem 2015, organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Dr Mitra said: ” I feel proud to say that today Haldia Petrochemicals Limited is functioning at 95 percent of its capacity, which is a record. The company is getting orders from states like Delhi, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu and is creating around 3,500 direct and indirect jobs, while number of jobs downstream is close to 3 lakhs. This means health has returned”.

The minister also said that the state is number one in reforms. “We have been rewarded by the Centre for reforms, which shows we are progressing”.

Dr Mitra urged industries to come forward and invest in the petrochemical sectors. “The per capita manufacturing capacity in the state for processed plastic is just 2.8 kgs while per capita consumption is nine kgs. So there is demand and I urge you to bridge this gap”.

The minister also appealed to industries to come up with a proposal and DPR for a petrochem cluster and assured all kinds of support for making the project a reality.

” You send us a proposal and we will consider it seriously”. trying to establish that land is not an issue in the state,the minister said we have around 4500 acres of land under WBIDC and also creating necessary infrastructures on another 4,400 acres. So getting land for setting up your unit won’t be a problem”.

Bengal receives investment proposal worth Rs 1000 crore for Plastic Park

West Bengal Government has received a proposal to set up a Rs 1000 crore Plastic Park in the State.

A 50 acre plot in Uluberia has been earmarked for a new plastic park in PPP model in collaboration with the MSME Department of the State Government.

At the moment the plastic market in the country is worth Rs 1.7 lakh crores with a growth rate of 14%. Keeping in view of such a huge demand, the Plastic Federation is eager to invest and the WB Government is ready to provide all help. Uluberia is well connected with National Highway and has good infra-structure facilities.

The state already has two such parks in operation; one in Sankrail, Howrah in collaboration with WBIDC which has about 42 manufacturing units in operation and the second in Kharagpur Industrial Estate.
