The Bangla Government is contemplating global promotion of muslin and other handicraft products.

While saying this recently, the State Finance and MSME Minister Dr Amit Mitra mentioned that the visits made by approximately 1.2 lakh international tourists to various handicraft hubs across 15 districts had given a tremendous boost to the village economy.

The Biswa Bangla outlet set up at the Kolkata airport has also been attracting a lot of buyers; foreigners who are buying the products at this outlet may feel the need of having such items in their countries and thereby contributing to the export automatically. We have specific plans to increase the export of muslin through various phases, elaborated the Minister.

Muslin products sold via Biswa Bangla store outlets are hugely popular and in great demand. Bangla had been one of the largest exporters of muslin sarees during the pre-colonial era.

The Government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the UNESCO in 2013 for the enhancement of soft skills of artisans, through which they have immensely benefited. It has helped the artisans not only raise their incomes but also uplift their social status.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has taken a special interest in bringing back the golden days for weavers. There are more than 300 families that are associated with the production of muslin sarees. The programme began with 3,000 artisans. Today, around 25,000 artisans are involved with the programme. Their income has increased from Rs 500 a month to Rs 7,500 while a few of them are even earning up to Rs 12,000 a month.

The West Bengal Khadi & Village Industries Board, under the Micro, Small & Medium enterprises and Textiles Department, has made significant progress in helping artisans across Bengal get access to proper, organised forums.

This has helped them in getting a respectable livelihood by using skills, many of which are handed down from generation to generation.

  • 8.5 times increase in number of khadi artisans between financial years (FY) 2011-12 and 2017-18
  • Over 29 times increase in sales of khadi products between FYs 2011-12 and 2017-18 to Rs 96.8 crore
  • Project Muslin being implemented, covering 3,000 muslin weavers
  • Project Saal Leaf launched involving 1,800 self-help groups (SHG), with a Centre of Excellence established in Jhargram
  • Project Mat launched, benefitting 2,500 mat artisans

Due to the sustained effort of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her Trinamool Congress Government, muslin is gaining popularity again. This is evident from the fact that the sale of muslin products at Biswa Bangla outlets – in Bengal and Delhi – has been rising steadily.

Having its origin in Dhaka, and hence called ‘Dhakai muslin’ in Bengali, the fabric is the pride of Bengal, when it comes to handmade fabrics. Muslin is made from the finest cotton, weaved into a glossy and a very light fabric, and hence an embodiment of royalty and luxury.

The muslin products sold through Biswa Bangla outlets are in high demand – sarees, handkerchiefs and jewellery for women, and shirts for men. The glossy jewellery and sarees are quick attraction-grabbers for the eyes of customers.

After coming to power in 2011, Mamata Banerjee had taken a special initiative to organise the weavers of muslin. There are around 300 families who are associated with the production of muslin sarees. They have been given training by experts to bring their designs and production techniques up-to-date and a Muslin Hub has come up in the district of Nadia, the traditional centre for muslin in the State. An exclusive outlet named Club Muslin has also been opened at the Dakshinapan shopping complex in Kolkata.

In keeping with the times, along with sarees, the weavers are also manufacturing kurta, pyjama, kurti, handkerchief, bed linen and costume jewellery. Kurta, pyjama and kurti are available in different colours.

Muslin-khadi material produced by weavers of Howrah has received widespread accolades from fashion designers and connoisseurs from the country. West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board (WBKVIB) has tied up with Udaynarayanpur Pancharul North Harishchandrapur Khadi and Village Development Organisation to unite the weavers.

After coming to power in 2011, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took initiatives to revive muslin and those weavers whose financial condition had gone from bad to worse. After the revival of muslin, the weavers were given training.

Accordingly, the weavers of Udaynarayanpur began to carry out experiments with khadi and muslin respectively. It is for the first time in the state when the unique muslin-khadi material is being produced in the state for the first time and probably in the country.

The muslin produced by the weavers has received international appreciation. Apart from sarees, shirts, kurtas, kurtis and bed linen and pillow covers made of muslin are being sold through different outlets of Biswa Bangla. Even costume jewellery made of muslin has received appreciation from the buyers from abroad.

In view of the success of muslin, it is hoped that the mixed material will have a very good market both in the country and abroad, said a senior state government official. Various schemes taken up by the state government have helped over 6,000 weavers in Howrah district to become financially stable. Artisan Welfare Trust has been set up to look after the interests of the weavers.

Under Janashree scheme, children of the weavers studying in Classes IX and X are getting a monthly stipend of Rs 1,200. The family of the weavers who die while working get Rs 3,000. The weavers can also take loans from the trust in times of need. As the financial condition of the weavers has improved manifold, they are working hard to improve the quality of their produce.

 

 

ফ্যাশন প্রেমীরা বাংলার মসলিন-খাদি মিশ্রিত বস্ত্রের প্রশংসায় পঞ্চমুখ

দেশের ফ্যাশন ডিজাইনার ও ফ্যাশন প্রেমীদের প্রশংসা পাচ্ছে হাওড়া জেলার মসলিন-খাদি বস্ত্রের শিল্পীরা।

২০১১ সালে ক্ষমতায় এসে মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় উদ্যোগ নেন মসলিন শিল্প পুনরুজ্জীবিত করার। শিল্পীদের দেওয়া হয় প্রশিক্ষণ। উদয়নারায়নপুরের শিল্পীরা এখন খাদি ও মসলিন নিয়ে বিভিন্ন পরীক্ষামূলক কাজ করছে। সম্ভবত দেশে এই প্রথম খাদি-মসলিন মিশ্রিত বস্ত্র তৈরি হয়েছে।

মসলিন শিল্পীরা পেয়েছে আন্তর্জাতিক প্রশংসা। মসলিনের তৈরি শাড়ি, শার্ট, কুর্তা, কুর্তি, বিছানার চাদর, বালিশের ওয়াড় বিশ্ব বাংলার অনেক দোকানে পাওয়া যায়। এমনকি মসলিনের তৈরি গয়নাও প্রশংসা পেয়েছে বিদেশে।

মসলিনের এই জনপ্রিয়তা দেখে আশা করা যায় মসলিন-খাদি মিশ্রিত বস্ত্রও জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করবে বিশ্বজুড়ে।

হাওড়ার ৬০০০ শিল্পীদের আর্থিকভাবে সহায়তা করতে রাজ্য সরকার চালু করেছে একাধিক প্রকল্প। আর্টিসান ওয়েলফেয়ার ট্রাস্ট তৈরি করা হয়েছে শিল্পীদের সাহায্যার্থে।

যেসকল শিল্পীদের সন্তান অষ্টম থেকে দ্বাদশ শ্রেণীতে পাঠ্যরত তাদের সরকারের তরফে দেওয়া হয় মাসিক ১২০০ টাকা। এই প্রকল্পের নাম জনশ্রী। প্রয়াত শিল্পীদের পরিবারদের দেওয়া হয় ৩০০০ টাকা। শিল্পীরা নিজেদের প্রয়োজনে ওই ট্রাস্ট থেকে ঋণ নিতে পারেন।

যেহেতু আগের তুলনায় শিল্পীদের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নতি হয়েছে, তারা আরও ভালো মানের কাজ করতে চেষ্টা করছেন।

The state government is going to set up a Biswa Bangla outlet at Kunming Changshui International Airport in China this July. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in this regard was signed recently in the state administrative headquarters at Nabanna.

A Chinese delegation had attended the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) held in January and expressed its willingness to invest in Bengal. After BGBS, a Chinese had come to the city and held talks with businessmen and senior officials of the Industry department. Senior state government officials felt that opening of the stall would start a new chapter and would showcase some of the typical products from Bengal.

It may be recalled that after coming to power in 2011, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took special measures to revive the nearly-forgotten products like Muslim and sital pati along with utensils made of bell-metal. The mask industry of Purulia and South Dinajpur also witnessed a revival. The artisans were looked after. The weavers who produced Muslins for generations were not only taken care of but also given elaborate training by reputed fashion designers.

Now, along with Muslin sarees, kurtas, pyjamas, tops for women, pillow covers and bed linens have become immensely popular.

 

বিদেশের মাটিতে এই প্রথম বিশ্ববাংলা বিপণি

এই প্রথম দেশের বাইরে চালু হতে চলেছে বিশ্ববাংলা স্টল। এবার বিশ্ববাংলা স্টল জায়গা পাচ্ছে কমিউনিস্ট চিনে।ইতিমধ্যে রাজ্য সরকারের সঙ্গে চিনের একটি মউ চুক্তি স্বাক্ষরও হয়েছে।

আগামী জুলাই মাসের মধ্যেই চিনের মাটিতে বিশ্ববাংলার স্টল তৈরির কাজ শেষ হবে।  চিনের কানমিং চাংশুই আন্তর্জাতিক বিমানবন্দরে তৈরি হচ্ছে বিশ্ববাংলা স্টল।

পুরুলিয়ার মুখোশ কোচবিহারে শীতলপাটি ,ডোকরা, বাংলার মসলিন শাড়ি, কাঁসার বাসন থেকে বর্ধমানের মিহিদানা, সীতাভোগ এবার জায়গা পাবে সুদূর চিনে।  মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর বিশ্ববাংলা ব্র্যান্ড এবার সত্যিই পৌঁছচ্ছে বিশ্বের দরবারে।  বাংলার শিল্প সংস্কৃতি থেকে খাদ্য সম্ভার এবার জায়গা করে নেবে কমিউনিস্ট চিনে।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রীর উদ্দেশ্য ছিল বিশ্ববাংলা ব্র্যান্ডের মধ্যে দিয়ে রাজ্যের হারিয়ে যেতে বসা হস্তশিল্পকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করা ও এই পণ্যগুলোকে বিশ্বের দরবারে তুলে ধরা। পাশাপাশি এই শিল্পের সঙ্গে জড়িত শিল্পীরাও যাতে উপকৃত হয় সেইদিকেও নজর রাখা।

কলকাতায় দমদম  বিমানবন্দর ,ঢাকুরিয়া ,দক্ষিণাপণে এবং বাগডোগরায় রয়েছে বিশ্ববাংলা স্টল।

Bengal is now all set to claim patents over their sweet dishes Sarpuria and Sarbhaja, asserting that these humble delicacies originated in the state’s Krishnanagar.

They also want to secure the state’s rights over another famous sweet delicacy ‘Sandesh’, made of molasses (called Nalen Gur in Bengali).

Bengal government is likely to apply for the GI (Geographical Indication) of these delicacies. GI tag is like a brand name granted to a product because of its geographical uniqueness.

Bengal will also claim Muslin clothes as its own. Similarly, the govt wants to claim patent for Ghurni clay dolls of Krishnanagar.

 

বাঙালি মিষ্টি ও হস্তশিল্পের জন্য জিআই ট্যাগ পেতে উদ্যোগ রাজ্যের

বাংলা এখন কৃষ্ণনগরের বিখ্যাত মিষ্টি সরপুরিয়া ও সরভাজার ওপর জি আই ট্যাগের দাবি পেশ করতে চলেছে – যা পেটেন্টের সমতুল্য।

এছাড়া বাংলার বিখ্যাত মিষ্টি নলেন গুড়ের সন্দেশের জন্য জি আই ট্যাগের জন্য আবেদন করবে।

বাংলার সরকার এই সুস্বাদু খাবার গুলির জন্য জি আই ট্যাগের আবেদন করবে। কোন জিনিসের অনন্যতার পরিচয় এই জি আই ট্যাগ।

এছাড়া বাংলা তাঁর নিজস্ব মসলিনের কাপড় এবং তাঁর  সঙ্গে কৃষ্ণনগরের হস্তশিল্প মাটির পুতুলের জন্য জি আই ট্যাগের দাবি করবে বাংলা।

The centuries-old fabric of muslin is now going overseas – to Rome and Milan, to be specific. After getting a lot of attention and appreciation all across the country, following the ardent efforts of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in reviving the making of this fine cloth, muslin is now going to capture hearts abroad.

The West Bengal Khadi & Village Industries Board has joined hands with the Italian Government to have some of the iconic traditional handloom and handicrafts of West Bengal exhibited in Rome and Milan this coming September.

Along with muslin sarees, baluchari sarees, and sitalpati and dokra artefacts would form part of a month-long exhibition spread across two of these biggest fashion markets in the world. The formalities for holding the exhibition were completed recently after the Italian consul-general in Kolkata met the chairman of the Khadi Board.

Since becoming Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee has been putting in unprecedented efforts towards revitalising the handlooms and handicrafts industry of the State. As a result, the industry is making good profit. About 11,000 people have been given loans to produce more and better goods. About 3,000 people have been engaged by the State Government to revive the muslin industry, specifically. All these efforts have enabled a lot of people become self-sufficient.

 

বাংলার মসলিন এবার যাচ্ছে রোম ও ইটালিতে

মসলিনের ঐতিহ্য ফেরাতে বিশেষ উদ্যোগ। এবার বিশ্বের দরবারে খাদি হস্তশিল্পকে তুলে ধরতে উদ্যোগী রাজ্য সরকার। মসলিনকে বিশ্বের দরবারে পৌছে দিতে রোমের সঙ্গে হাত মেলাল রাজ্য খাদি বোর্ড।

বিশ্ব আসরে মসলিনকে জনপ্রিয় করতে রোমে প্রদর্শনীর আয়োজন করা হচ্ছে।মসলিন নিয়ে সেপ্টেম্বরে একমাসব্যাপী প্রদর্শনী হবে রোম ও মিলান শহরে।

এ মাসেই মসলিন সহ বালুচরী, শীতলপাটি এবং ডোকরার জিনিসপত্র পাঠানো হবে রোম ও মিলান শহরে। রোম ট্রেন্ডি পোশাকের শহর – ঐতিহ্য ও আধুনিকতার চমত্কার মিশেল। এই শহরে প্রদর্শনী হলে মসলিনের প্রতি আগ্রহ আরও বাড়বে। সেই ভাবনা থেকেই এই পদক্ষেপ। মঙ্গলবার খাদি ভবনে এসে পুরো বিষয়টি পাকাপাকি করেন রোমের কনসুলেট জেনারেল।

উদ্যোক্তাদের আশা, মসলিন যেভাবে গোটা ভারতের মন জয় করেছে, তেমনই মন জয় করবে ইতালিরও। বিশ্বের দরবারে এভাবেই পৌছে গিয়ে ঐতিহ্য ফিরে আসবে বাংলার গর্বের মসলিনের।

মুখ্যমন্ত্রী হওয়ার পর থেকেই মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় তাঁত ও হস্তশিল্পের উন্নতির ওপর জোর দিয়েছেন। ফলস্বরূপ, শিল্প ভাল মুনাফা অর্জন করেছে। ভাল পন্য উতপাদনের জন্য ১১০০০ মানুষকে ঋণ দেওয়া হয়েছে। মসলিন শিল্পকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করার জন্য প্রায় ৩০০০ জনকে নিযুক্ত করেছে রাজ্য সরকার।  রাজ্য সরকারের এই উদ্যোগে অনেক মানুষ স্ব-নির্ভর হয়েছেন।

The West Bengal Handicrafts Development Corporation will inaugurate the country’s first genre-specific online store www.balucharisaree.inand soon an app, exclusively for Baluchari sarees.

Buyers can not only buy Baluchari sarees directly, they can give their design to the weavers and thus customise the product. Besides Baluchari sarees, bags, jackets and ties will also be available.

The demand of Baluchari sarees was going up fast, both in the country and abroad. Apart from the sarees, buyers are interested in various other Baluchari products such as Baluchari jackets and bags which are hand woven with Baluchari designs.

The State Government will encourage budding designers to direct the traditional weavers to make their products contemporary.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had emphasised on reviving Bengal’s traditional culture, which includes Baluchari and muslin. The weavers have been trained and cooperatives have been formed to look after them.

The Baluchari and muslin weavers, who were on the brink of extinction, have got a new lease of life. She has also stressed on the need to sell these products and has proposed to set up Biswa Bangal stalls abroad.

 

বাংলার বালুচরি শাড়ি এবার  পাওয়া যাবে অনলাইনে

পশ্চিমবঙ্গ হস্তশিল্প উন্নয়ন কর্পোরেশন বালুচরি শাড়ির জন্য দেশের মধ্যে অনলাইন ষ্টোরের www.balucharisaree.in জন্য প্রথম একটি অ্যাপও চালু করবে।

ক্রেতারা শুধুমাত্র সরাসরি বালুচরি শাড়ি কিনতে পারবেন তা নয় তারা তাঁতিদের নানারকম নকশাও দিতে পারেন। বালুচরি শাড়ির পাশাপাশি এখানে ব্যাগ, জ্যাকেট, টাইও পাওয়া যাবে।

দেশ-বিদেশে বালুচরি শাড়ির চাহিদা দ্রুত বাড়ছে। শাড়ি ছাড়াও বালুচরির অন্যান্য প্রোডাক্ট যেমন বালুচরি জ্যাকেট, বালুচরি ব্যাগ ইত্যাদির চাহিদা বেশি ক্রেতাদের মধ্যে।

আধুনিক মানের প্রোডাক্ট তৈরি করার জন্য রাজ্য সরকার উদীয়মান তাঁত শিল্পীদের উৎসাহিত করবে।

বাংলার ঐতিহ্যবাহী সংস্কৃতি বালুচরি এবং মসলিন শিল্পকে পুনরুজ্জীবিত করার উপর জোর দিয়েছেন পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা ব্যানার্জী। তাঁতিদের প্রশিক্ষণ দেওয়া হয়েছে এবং তাদের দেখাশোনা করার জন্য সমবায় গঠন করা হয়েছে।

বাংলার বালুচরি ও মসলিন তাঁতিরা যারা কিন্তু বিলুপ্ত হয়ে যাচ্ছিলেন তারা জীবনের এক নতুন ইজারা পেয়েছেন।

তিনি এই পণ্য বিক্রির ওপর গুরুত্বারোপ করেছে এবং বিদেশে বিশ্ববাংলা স্টলে এইসব পণ্য বিক্রি করার প্রস্তাব দিয়েছেন।

Exquisite artefacts from West Bengal with long histories such as ‘jamdani’, ‘muslin’, ‘kantha’ and ‘balaposh’ were a major draw in the London Design Festival.

The artefacts included the ‘Indo-Portuguese shawl’, which draws on a long history of colonialism in Bengal and a confluence of cultures. The seven artefacts displayed under the ‘Biswa Bangla’ initiative showcased the best of the state’s handloom and handicrafts sector.

“We got an excellent response. We tested the waters here, and received many inquiries for regular supplies. Biswa Bangla is now in the process of opening a store in Piccadilly to scale up our efforts,”, Rajiva Sinha, principal secretary of the state’s department of textiles said.

Described as an initiative that eliminates ‘middlemen’ and distributes all profits among traditional craftspersons associated with it, Biswa Bangla achieved a revenue of Rs 15 crore in its first year and is on target to achieve a revenue of Rs 25 crore with a larger pool of craftspersons.

Besides stores in West Bengal and New Delhi, it will be the first time that any state government will have such stores outside India, officials attending the London Design Festival said. Besides London, there are plans to open a store in China.

7,000 traditional craftspersons are associated with Biswa Bangla, producing 5,400 products, many of whom have long histories and were part of international trade during the colonial era. Some products are due to be displayed at the Victoria & Albert Museum next year.

The products on display included ‘patachitra’, or scrolls on which mythological or epic stories are painted in a sequence, and masks from south Dinajpur and Bankura, made from bamboo, wood and clay.

Now at a click of a mouse or a gentle tap on your smart phone you can choose a Jamdani, Tangail, handloom or silk printed saree from Tantuja.

Customers can go online shopping at Flipkart without jostling through the Puja crowd. With an increase in online shopping, the West Bengal State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society Limited also decided to go online with its handloom sarees.

Its premiun brand Tantuja’s Jamdani, printed silk, handloom sarees, self designed sarees of various ranges are available on online stores like Flipkart.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has always encouraged the growth of MSME. To showcase West Bengal’s handloom in other states and in London she has opened Biswa Bangla brand stores.

She has also instructed MSME minister Swapan Debnath to revive Muslin, an almost decaying fine handloom.

“The customers can avoid Puja rush and make their choice of sarees online. They will receive the delivery at their doorstep,” the minister said.

He said, “We are in the business for the past three and a half months and have made a business of Rs.10.5 lakh. Through stores like Flipkart it has become easier for NRIs and Bengali families living in other states to get Bengal handlooms at their doorstep”.
