A delegation of AITC Parliamentary Party, along with the family members of party workers killed by BJP in pre-poll violence, today called on the Hon’ble President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Every family member described in detail to the Hon’ble President the horrors unleashed upon them by the Opposition.

Reproduced below is the memorandum in full.

May 3, 2018

To
The Hon’ble President of India
Rashtrapati Bhavan
New Delhi

Respected President,

At the outset, we, the Members of the Parliament, belonging to the All India Trinamool Congress, would like to convey our highest regards to you.

We would like to apprise you of some issues which have been brought to your kind notice very recently by the Members of the Ruling political party at the Centre, which are distorted and misleading in nature.

Respected Sir, Panchayat election is a local election, where more than 58 thousand booths throughout West Bengal will go for the polls on 14 May 2018. At the time of filing nomination papers, the BJP started spreading rumours and misleading the people, saying that opposition parties are not being allowed to file nominations. This was spread through one particular ‘sponsored’ media group.

The fact that the Opposition has not been able to submit nominations is not at all true, as more than 96 thousand nominations have been filed by the Opposition parties. If they have not been allowed to file nomination papers, how is it possible that more than 2 lakh nominations in total have been filed? Out of these, more than 96 thousand are from the Opposition. During the period of filing nominations, the entire administration from district level to the block level, along with the police officials worked together for the common people.

Respected Sir, few incidents, however, did take place. These have been over-projected through one particular ‘sponsored’ media group to tarnish the image of the Government, which has worked wonders in West Bengal after being voted to power in 2011.

Before 2011, political violence was the maximum in West Bengal. In Jangal Mahal itself, more than 300 people were killed. At that time, man-days lost due to bandhs and strikes were about 78 lakh.

The picture changed dramatically after the All India Trinamool Congress Party came to power in 2011. While Darjeeling and Jangal Mahal are totally peaceful, there is zero man-days loss in the State of West Bengal.

Respected Sir, you would no doubt appreciate that West Bengal now has become Number One in the country in the spheres detailed below:

  • Number One in man-days generation and total expenditure under 100-Days’ Work
  • Number One in Bank Credit Flows to the MSME Sector
  • Number One in the Ease of Doing Business
  • Number One in Minority Scholarships
  • Number One in Minority Loans (for self-employment)
  • Number One in Rural Housing
  • Number One in Rural Connectivity
  • Number One in Skills
  • Number One in Transparency and e-Tendering

In order to tarnish the image of West Bengal and to mislead the people by citing some incidents, the BJP got themselves involved in lynching and killing by hiring people from outside the State and fomenting communal violence.

Respected Sir, you will be shocked and saddened to learn that 5 murder cases took place very recently and all the persons killed belong to the All India Trinamool Congress Party. The list of persons killed is given below:

  1. On 11.04.18, around 17.00 hrs, some supporters of TMC Party assembled near Beliaghata Bridge Party Office under Shasan Police Station, Basirhat Police District to celebrate the uncontested victory in c/w the Falti Beliaghata Gram Panchayat. During the celebration, one Rajab Ali of Uttar Falti stabbed one Saifar Rahaman of Dakshin Baidyapur and fled away. The said Saifar expired on the way to hospital.
  2. On 22.04.18, around 05.00 hrs, one Abdul Ali Mondal along with three others all of Nityananda Kati under Basirhat Police Station, North 24 Parganas allegedly murdered one Amirul Mollick of the same area by slashing the throat and dumped the body in the drain near his house. The deceased belongs to TMC Party.
  3. On 14.04.18, around 16.30 hrs, one Kala Das of Fulbari along with 15 others restrained and assaulted one Bablu Sarkar, member of TMC, of Kethi near Nabaganj Bazar under Ghoksadanga Police Station of Coochbehar district, with the intention to kill, while returning home riding a bike. He was taken to the nearest hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on 20.04.2018. Arrest-03.
  4. On 23.04.18, around 11.30 hrs., while one Dildar Khan along with his wife was proceeding towards Suri-I BDO Office under Suri Police Station, Birbhum for filing nomination in respect of his wife as a TMC candidate in c/w ensuring Panchayat Election 2018, some armed BJP supporters led by one Shyamsundar Lorain shot dead the said  Dildar Khan over political rivalry.
  5. On 19.04.18, one Ajit Debnath of Sundarpore Satberia, PS Gopalnagar was shot at night while at home; hesubsequently succumbed to his injuries in hospital on 22.04.18. His wife Padma was also injured in the attack; however, she survived.

It is very unfortunate that we have to bring this to your kind attention that in each and every murder, as described above, the BJP is involved.

Respected Sir, we do sincerely hope and know that your high office would appreciate the true situation on the ground perpetrated by a section of political parties opposed to peaceful democratic processes in Bengal. We appeal to you in the best interest of peace and democracy, to outright reject their malicious campaign and unfounded allegations.

With regards,

Yours sincerely,

Members of Parliament
from All India Trinamool Congress Party

Abhishek Banerjee’s speech at United Nations General Assembly

Statement by Mr. Abhishek Banerjee, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, at the Thematic Debate on Other Weapons of Mass Destruction at the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly on October 22, 2015:

Mr. Chairman,

India associates itself with the statement delivered by Indonesia on behalf of the Non-Aligned Movement and that delivered by Russia on behalf of BRICS.

India attaches high importance to the two Conventions on Chemical and Biological Weapons as examples of non-discriminatory treaties in the field of disarmament for the total elimination of a specific type of weapons of mass destruction. The success of these Conventions can be a model for the future elimination of the other type of weapons of mass destruction- nuclear weapons.

As disarmament is a primary goal of the Chemical Weapons Convention, the remaining possessor States should fulfil their obligations within the shortest possible time. India completed the destruction of its chemical weapon stockpiles in 2009 within the stipulated time frame under the CWC. The provisions of the Convention should be implemented in a manner that does not hinder legitimate activities, especially in countries like India with a large and growing chemical industry. Universality is also fundamental to the success of the Convention.

The use of chemical weapons anywhere and by anyone must be condemned and the international norm against the use of chemical weapons must not be breached. India contributed to international efforts under the UN and the OPCW for the destruction of Syria’s declared chemical weapon stockpiles. The international community should continue to be vigilant on non-state actors and terrorist groups seeking or using chemical weapons.

Mr. Chairman,

India remains committed to improving the effectiveness of the BWC and strengthening its implementation and its universalization. India shares the widespread interest amongst States Parties to strengthen the effectiveness and improve the implementation of the Convention through the negotiation and conclusion of a Protocol for that purpose. We believe this is necessary in view of the new challenges to international peace and security emanating from proliferation trends, including the threat posed by terrorists or other non-state actors seeking access to biological agents or toxins for terrorist purposes.

We support a robust consultation process among all States Parties leading to the Eighth Review Conference next year, so as to contribute to its success through preparations on substantive and procedural issues. India is making substantive contributions in this regard. We have submitted a Joint Working Paper with France on measures to strengthen Assistance under Article VII of the Convention. We have tabled a Joint Working Paper with the United States on strengthening the implementation of Article III of the Convention. These demonstrate India’s contribution of concrete proposals on key aspects of the Convention and our willingness to work with partners to build broad based understandings and agreement that would benefit all State Parties to the Convention.

Mr. Chairman,

India is committed to maintaining the highest international standards with reference to control of nuclear, chemical, biological and toxin weapons and their means of delivery. In this regard, India has made considerable progress in its engagement with the relevant multilateral export control regimes with a view to seeking full membership. India has strong and law-based national export controls consistent with the highest international standards. India has filed reports to UNSCR 1540 and has provided the latest update this year.

A world without weapons of mass destruction would be a world without fear of instant annihilation. In conclusion I would like to quote Rabindranath Tagore – great son of India and a great poet of Bengal:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high
Where knowledge is free
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments
By narrow domestic walls
Where words come out from the depth of truth
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way
Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit
Where the mind is led forward by thee
Into ever-widening thought and action
Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake

Thank you.

Abhishek Banerjee to represent Trinamool at UN

Trinamool Congress’ youngest MP Abhishek Banerjee is likely to be part of a delegation of Indian parliamentarians visiting the United Nations’ New York headquarters from October 19-30.

It is significant because soon after assuming power, the current Prime Minister had scrapped this practice, which has been a norm since Jawaharlal Nehru’s times. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had registered her protest forcing the Centre to rethink its decision.

Abhishek was named by Sudip Bandyopadhyay , Trinamool Congress leader in Lok Sabha.

“We nominated Abhishek because he is the youngest MP in the party . This delegation provides a rare insight into the workings of United Nations general assembly . It will help him,” he said.

Party MPs Derek O’ Brien, Nadimul Haque and Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar have been part of similar delegations. Abhishek Banerjee, National President of All India Trinamool Youth Congress, is the second youngest MP in Lok Sabha.

Abhishek Banerjee’s ‘Silent Revolution’

Trinamool Youth Congress National President and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee has published a booklet with the list of work done by him in the seven assembly segments under his parliamentary constituency in the last one year.

Abhishek Banerjee had taken oath as an MP on 5 June, 2014. To commemorate the first anniversary of the occasion, he addressed a public meeting at Amtala where this booklet was formally published.

Titled ‘Silent Revolution’, the book contains every detail of the initiatives and achievements of Abhishek Banerjee as an MP. Mayor of Kolkata Sovan Chatterjee, District President Shamima Sheikh, MLA Ashok Deb and other leaders were present on the occasion.

Speaking on the occasion, Abhishek said, “The booklet will become thicker as years pass. At the end of four years I will gift a thick book to the people of my constituency.” He added, “If the Opposition throws bouncers at us, we will reply with sixers across the boundary.”

Kalyan Banerjee raises security issues at MP residences in Delhi | Transcript

Full transcript:

Madam, I am raising an issue regarding burglary, thievery and insecurity of the MP flats at Delhi.

Madam, what has happened, our Leader Sudip Bandyopadhyay is ill and is in Kolkata. Last time also he could not attend the session.

On 7 March, 2015 from his residence at 80 Moulana Azad Road, everything was stolen including things from his puja room. His help who stays there lodged a FIR on that day itself, but the police did not take any step. Again yesterday evening, around 5 – 5.30 PM, an attempt of theft was made though it was thwarted.

Earlier the Chairman of the Housing Committee took up the general security issues in consultation with all the MPs, but no result is evident yet.

Madam, through you I am making a request, especially when the MPs are not there in the flat or bungalows, security must be extended in full.

Thank you.

TMC supports Citizenship (Amendment) Bill in LS but slams Centre for Ordinance route

Trinamool MPs today slammed the Centre in Lok Sabha for taking the ordinance route to the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2015. Although they support the Bill, they reject the approach to the amendment.

“This Government has brought six Ordinances and trying to run the country through an Ordinance Raj” said Saugata Roy in Lok Sabha.

Ratna De Nag also raised a concern about the same issue stating the “specific Amendment is expected to replace in Sec 5 of the Citizenship Act, instead of words ‘has been residing in India for one year’ with ‘is ordinarily resident in India for 12 months’. Likewise overseas citizen of India is substituted with overseas citizen of India card-holder. But I would like to put my objection to the way in which it was brought to the House through Ordinance. I object the Ordinance.”

Mamatabala Thakur takes oath as MP in Lok Sabha

Mamatabala Thakur, who recently won from Bongaon constituency, took oath today as Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha.

12 out of the 34 newly-elected Trinamool MPs in Lok Sabha are women; this constitutes about 35.2% of TMC MPs. Thus, Trinamool Congress is the only political party which has acted  for the empowerment of women in the country.

Trinamool Congress has the highest percentage of women MPs in the house. The 16th Lok Sabha has only 65 women members which is around 11% of total.

While others only talk of women empowerment, Trinamool’s actions speak louder than words.
