Bengal Finance and Industries Minister Dr Amit Mitra made a major announcement yesterday from the UK, where he has gone as part of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s entourage for meeting potential investors for Bengal as well as for inviting prominent industrialists to the upcoming Bengal Global Business Summit.

He announced that Mitsubishi Chemicals is going to set up a large-capacity plant for manufacturing components required in the textile industry.

Explaining the process, he said that the PTA (purified terephthalic acid) made by the company would be converted through the process of continuous polymerisation in the plant to fibre, which would then be converted by spinning mills into the textile components.

The plant is going to provide employment opportunities for 50,000 to 1 lakh people. This number would be gradually upped to 5 lakh. The minister said that work is going to start on a priority basis.

The initial investment amount would be Rs 5,000 crore, which would be scaled up to Rs 10,000 crore in due course.

Dr Mitra said that Bengal would soon be at the forefront of the textile sector in the country.

রাজ্যের বস্ত্রশিল্পে এবার বিনিয়োগ আসছে মিৎসুবিশির হাত ধরে। এ বার রাজ্যে পলিয়েস্টার ফ্যাব্রিক তৈরি করবে মিৎসুবিশি। এর জন্য ৫ হাজার কোটি টাকা বিনিয়োগ করবে তারা। ফলে ৫০ হাজার থেকে ১ লক্ষ কর্মসংস্থান তৈরি হবে।

মিৎসুবিশি কেমিক্যাল কর্পোরেশন ইন্ডিয়া এই প্রথম একটি বাইপ্রডোক্ট তৈরি করবে। নাম পিটিএ অর্থাৎ পিউরিফায়েড টেরিপ্যাথিলিক অ্যাসিড। এই বাইপ্রোডাক্ট থেকেই পলিয়েস্টার ফ্যাব্রিক তৈরি করা যাবে।

এতদিন রাজ্যে এধরনের ফ্যাব্রিক তৈরি হত না। মিৎসুবিসি তা তৈরি করা শুরু করলে বাংলাদেশে রফতানিও বিপুল বাড়বে বলে আশাবাদী শিল্পমন্ত্রী। রাজ্যে বস্ত্রশিল্পের নবদিগন্ত খুলতে চলেছে।

মঙ্গলবার রাতে লন্ডনে বৈঠক সেরে ট্রেনে করে এডিনবরার উদ্দেশে রওনা দেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী।বৃহস্পতিবার এডিনবরায় বসছে রাজ্যের বাণিজ্য সম্মেলন। সেখানে বাংলার সাম্প্রতিক উন্নয়নের খতিয়ান শিল্পপতিদের জানানো হবে।

তার আগে মিৎসুবিসির এই বিনিয়োগের আশ্বাস রাজ্যের বাড়তি পাওনা বলেই মনে করছে শিল্পমহলের একাংশ।

Whiff of Japanese investment in cold chain logistics — a crucial sector where Bengal has long yearned for investments — has livened up the air before the inauguration of the Bengal Global Business Summit and the first beneficiary is likely to be Singur. Announcement regarding the same was made at Bengal Global Business Summit, 2016.

Kawasaki-Rikuso Transportation Company ( KRT), a Japanese logistics giant is to set up a cold warehousing facility in Singur. It is one of the potato hubs of the state and the farmers suffer whenever there is bumper crop due to lack of modern and adequate storage facilities.

It will be the first Japanese investment in Bengal 19 years after Mitsubishi Chemicals, a Fortune 500 giant, selected Haldia in 1997 to locate its factory in India.

The KRT all set to set up such units across the state if the pilot runs to its satisfaction.

Such chains consist of cold warehousing facilities of perishable food items and even packaging and labeling services. It also has refrigerated trucks carrying the perishable commodities from one spot to another.

The 92-year-old company may bring excellent skills and proverbial Japanese adherence to quality to the state.

The selection of Singur for the pilot also makes sense as MK Jalan is trying to set up a food park at nearby Dunkuni. Another food processing park is also close by at Sankrail in Howrah district where Frito Lays (a division of Pepsico) is running its factory for the past several years.

Cold chains are important in the development of food processing industry that holds immense potential in Bengal. Thanks to the fertile lower Gangetic plains, the state grows a lot of fruits and vegetables. From guavas of South 24 Parganas to pineapples of Siliguri, the state offers a variety of fruit to be processed.
