Mother Dairy Calcutta launches vitamin A & D-enriched milk

Mother Dairy Calcutta has started selling milk fortified with vitamins A and D. The milk is being sold under the ‘Maa Shakti’ brand. Till date, the Maa Shakti brand of milk was fortified with vitamin A only.

Besides general health benefits, vitamin A and D can specifically lead to eradication of night-blindness (nyctalopia) and malnutrition, respectively.

The project was launched recently by the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) and Textiles Departments at the company’s Dankuni unit (near Kolkata). Mother Dairy Calcutta is a State Government-owned company. It was at the behest of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee that the Government had taken over the company.

At present, Mother Dairy Calcutta sells around 2.15 lakh litres of milk and 6,000kg of milk products (including buttermilk, yoghurt, paneer, mango pudding and ice-cream) per day, manufactured at its units across Bangla. To cater to the people of north Bengal, Mother Dairy Calcutta had started production and distribution of milk at its Matigara unit in Siliguri.

Bangla Govt to develop fireworks manufacturing as a viable industry

With a view to developing the manufacturing of fireworks as a major industry and control illegal manufacturing, the Bengal Government has decided set up fireworks manufacturing clusters across the State.

There are many villages where manufacturing firecrackers is the source of livelihood for many. The new policy would put a proper structure in place.

Manufacturing of fireworks is a recognised small-scale industry in the State, but it needs more organisation. Hence the Micro, Small & Medium Enterprise and Textiles Department is coming up with the policy of setting up manufacturing clusters.

The Government has roped in Fireworks Research and Development Centre (FRDC) to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) to set up a cluster of fireworks factories on 50 acres at Baruipur in South 24 Parganas.

Based on the DPR, manufacturing clusters will be set up in the districts of Hooghly, Howrah, Murshidabad and Purba Bardhaman.

The policy would ensure a single-window opportunity for acquiring license and environment certificate by interested manufacturers.

It would ensure that the families involved in the manufacturing of firecrackers get to work in a better, safe and hazard-free environment. The clusters will have facilities for testing of materials to ensure quality control. The processes for manufacturing would be standardised.

There will be separate entry and exit points at each of the units in a cluster and those will have proper working conditions like adequate light, air, safety measures, etc. Moreover, warehouses for storing highly inflammable materials will be properly planned.

Bengal Govt setting up cooperatives to help farmers process spices, herbs

The State Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Department has started a major project in the Hills region of setting up cooperatives, comprising local farmers, for processing and packaging locally-grown herbs and spices.

The Department has been working for the past six months to rope in local farmers for the cooperatives. They mainly grow cardamom, basil (tulsi), turmeric and ginger.

The farmers will be provided with necessary machines and gadgets for processing and packaging herbs and spices. The products will be sold by the cooperatives themselves, so that the profits go back to them.

This venture will be one of the highlights of the Hill Business Summit to be held on March 13 and 14, which will be inaugurated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Top entrepreneurs are going to attend the summit.

The summit is expected to give a major boost to the economy of the region. It is for the first time that the people of the Hills will be exposed to such a big platform that is intended to showcase the potential of the region. Highlighting the forming of industrial cooperatives for the farmers in the Hills will help them get business.

According to a senior official of the MSME Department, there are a lot of forest and agro-based resources in the Hills. The project was taken after a market study revealed that there is a great demand for products like large cardamom, ginger, turmeric and basil.

Citing an example, the official said there is a huge demand for basil extract (‘tulsi arak’ in Bengali and ‘tulsi ark’ in Hindi), as it has high medicinal value. Suppose there are 100 families involved in growing basil plants in the Hills. They will be brought under the cooperatives and will be provided with machinery for processing and packaging the same, he said.

At the same time, dairy products of Kalimpong, the famous orchids grown in the region, local dresses and handicraft goods will also be highlighted at the business summit.

Handicraft artisans witness marked growth under the Trinamool Congress Govt

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s zeal for taking Bengal back to its glory days is bearing fruit. Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME) Department recently said that the Trinamool Congress Government has brought about a marked growth in the socio-economic condition of handicrafts artisans in the rural reaches of the state by giving them platforms to sell their items. He was speaking at the prize-distribution ceremony of the State Handicrafts Expo in New Town.

As many as 40 handicrafts and handloom fairs are organised by the Trinamool Congress Government at various locations every year. During the previous Left Front Government, only 12 such fairs used to be held.

The minister followed it up with another comparison – from the various fairs, handicraft items worth nearly Rs 40 crore are sold every year, compared to Rs 18 crore during the previous government’s rule. Not just that, many of the handicraft items have found a market abroad, courtesy again, the current State Government.

The government is also bearing the travel expense of the artisans who bring their products from far-off districts and showcase them at the fairs. To ensure that the artisans do not face any difficulties, the MSME Department is also waiving the entry fees for the participants.
