As lakhs of pilgrims will take the holy dip on ‘Makar Sankranti’ on Saturday, Bengal PHE and Panchayat & Rural Development Minister Subrata Mukherjee on Friday said this year’s Gangasagar Mela is declared as ‘Green Mela’ and efforts are on make it plastic waste-free.
“Altogether 8,200 toilets have been set up by the district administration as the Gangasagar Mela, 2017 has been declared as ‘Green Mela’ this year and efforts are made to make it plastic waste-free,” the Minister said.
Speaking about the final arrangements, the Minister said the State Government was providing all kinds of support to people coming to attend the Mela from across the country. “State administration is always active to tackle any untoward incident,” he said.
He also said six lakh people have visited the Mela so far and around 15 to 16 lakh people were likely to attend it till Sunday. A total of 40 ambulances have been kept ready for providing medical assistance to the pilgrims, besides deployment of security personnel in large number, he said. Altogether 155 CCTV cameras have been installed and a drone was also in action to maintain security at the fairgrounds, the Minister added.

আজ মকর সংক্রান্তি উপলক্ষে লক্ষ লক্ষ তীর্থযাত্রীর আগমন হয়েছে গঙ্গাসাগর মেলায়। রাজ্যের জন স্বাস্থ্য কারিগরি, পঞ্চায়েত ও গ্রামোন্নয়ন মন্ত্রী সুব্রত মুখোপাধ্যায় গতকাল জানান, “এবছরের গঙ্গাসাগর মেলাকে ‘সবুজ মেলা’ ঘোষণা করা হয়েছে এবং মেলাকে প্লাস্টিকজাত বর্জ্য পদার্থ মুক্ত রাখার জন্য সব ধরনের ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে। মোট ৮,২০০টি শৌচাগার তৈরি করেছে জেলা প্রশাসন”।
মন্ত্রী বলেন, “দেশের বিভিন্ন প্রান্ত থেকে আসা সকল তীর্থযাত্রীদের সবরকমভাবে সাহায্য করছে রাজ্য সরকার। তাদের নিরাপত্তার জন্যও যথেষ্ট ব্যবস্থা নেওয়া হয়েছে। রাজ্য প্রশাসন যে কোন রকম দুর্ঘটনার মোকাবিলা করতে প্রস্তুত।”
তিনি আরও জানান, “এখনও পর্যন্ত ৬ লাখ মানুষ উপস্থিত হয়েছেন মেলা প্রাঙ্গনে ও আগামী রবিবারের মধ্যে আনুমানিক ১৫ থেকে ১৬ লাখ মানুষ গঙ্গাসাগরে উপস্থিত হবেন। ৪০টি অ্যাম্বুলেন্স রাখা হয়েছে তীর্থযাত্রীদের চিকিৎসার সহায়তার জন্য। প্রচুর সংখ্যায় নিরাপত্তা কর্মী মোতায়েনের পাশাপাশি ১৫৫টি সিসিটিভি ক্যামেরাও লাগানো হয়েছে সঙ্গে একটি ড্রোনও থাকছে নজর রাখতে”।
