Kolkata Municipal Corporation officials along with officials of other civic bodies are taking all measures to keep the environment clean post-immersion of the Durga idols.
As soon as civic workers immersed the idol into the Hooghly, a crane moved into action. Before the colourful countenance could disappear under water, the machine retrieved and moved it to an isolated corner. As the crane retreated, a large vehicle picked it up and loaded it onto a lorry.
The same sequence played out several hundred times throughout Thursday at Baje Kadamtala Ghat on Strand Road, where the immersions were on. The elaborate logistical arrangements that included a proper plan, several heavy vehicles, police deployment and co-operation from organizers ensured that the immersion of idols did not pollute the river.
Since morning, even before the immersions started, close to 50 KMC lorries lined up along Strand Road. A barge-mounted crane was stationed close to the ghat to chip in during emergencies. Eight cranes and six payloaders worked round the clock, picking up idols from the river and putting them on the lorries. Close to 200 civic workers were also present.
A MMIC who visited the ghats in the morning said the civic body has made adequate arrangements to expedite the immersion process without causing any pollution to the river. The idols are being retrieved as soon as they are immersed. Civic workers and divers are keeping an eye on them so that idols do not drift away, he said.
The civic body enforced rules strictly this time. Whenever a vehicle stopped at the road leading to Baje Kadamtala Ghat, a group of men rushed to the dismounted the idol. It was taken to a spot where leaves, flowers, garlands, earthenware and other accessories were dumped in an isolated area away from the river.

কলকাতা পৌরসভা ও অন্যান্য পৌরসভার অধিকর্তারা সব ধরণের প্রস্তুতি নিয়েছে যাতে দূর্গা প্রতিমা বিসর্জনের জন্য পরিবেশ কোনো ভাবে দূষিত না হয়।
নাগরিক সমিতি হুগলি নদীতে প্রতিমা বিসর্জনের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে একটি বিশাল ক্রেন ওই মূর্তিটিকে তুলে একটি কোনে রাখবে যাতে কোনো ভাবেই প্রতিমার গায়ের রঙ জলে না মিশে যায়, ওই কোন থেকে পেলোয়াডর্স-এর মাধ্যমে প্রতিমাটিকে তুলে লরিতে বোঝাই করা হবে।
বাজে কদমতলা ঘাটে গতকাল কয়েকশো বার এই পুরো প্রক্রিয়াটি করা হয়েছে কারণ কাল ওই ঘাটে বিসর্জন হয়েছে বহু প্রতিমা।
এই সুবিশাল পরিকল্পনাটি নিশ্চিত করেছে যে এই বিসর্জন থেকে কোনো ভাবেই পরিবেশ দূষণ হবে না।
সকালে বিসর্জনের বহু আগে থেকে কর্পোরেশনের ৫০টি লরি স্ট্র্যান্ড রোডে মজুদ ছিল। আপত্কালীন ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে আরেকটি ক্রেন রাখা হয়েছে যেটি একটি বড় বজরাতে লাগানো থাকবে। আটটি ক্রেন, ছয়টি পেলোয়াডর্স ও ২০০জন পুরকর্মী ওখানে সর্বক্ষণ প্রস্তুত থাকবে।
একজন এমএমআইসি যিনি সকালবেলা ঘাট পরিদর্শন করেন তিনি জানান নাগরিক সমিতির এবারের যা প্রস্তুতি তাতে কোনো ভাবেই বিসর্জনের ফলে কোনো পরিবেশ দূষণ হবে না।
এবারে পৌরসভা খুব সক্রিয়, যে মুহূর্তে কোনো গাড়ি ঘাটে এসে দাঁড়াচ্ছে, পূরকর্মীরা ওখানে গিয়ে সঙ্গে সঙ্গে প্রতিমা নামিয়ে নিচ্ছে ও ফুল, পাতা ও অন্যান্য সামগ্রী যা বিসর্জন করা হয়ে থাকে, সেগুলোকে গঙ্গা থেকে একটু দূরে একটা জায়গায় জমা করা হচ্ছে।
