Massive clean-up launched post-July 21 rally

Immediately after Trinamool’s Ekushe July rally yesterday at Esplanade ended, workers of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), assisted by workers appointed through the 100 Days’ Work Scheme, launched a massive clean-up operation, both at the site and the adjoining places where crowds had gathered to listen. The mayor was in charge of the operation.

The clean-up at the venue was over in just 45 minutes. To make it quicker, cleaners at Chittaranjan Avenue, Lenin Sarani, SN Banerjee Road, Bentinck Street and their adjoining lanes started their work just as Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s speech ended. At the venue, the operation began after the crowds left.

About 200 workers of the Solid Waste Management Department were on hand with brooms and buckets. On hand too were two mechanical sweepers, 12 movable compactors, 45 auto dippers and 12 big garbage trucks. Helping clean up all the garbage were 150 workers employed under the 100 Days’ Work Scheme to.

The party had already made people aware of the necessity of not throwing garbage anywhere and everywhere. So, for example, thermocol plates were dumped at specific sites. For this reason, the cleaning up was easier.

After cleaning up the main sites, KMC officers led parties of workers to various places across Kolkata, along which workers went in processions or gathered, and where food had been cooked for the rally attendees. By the evening, every place where people had gathered had been made free of garbage.

It may be mentioned that Trinamool Congress has always ensured that meeting grounds are cleaned up and restored to the original state immediately after rallies, be it July 21 rallies or Brigade Parade Ground rallies or at any other places.

Trinamool calls for ousting BJP from power at Centre

From the stage of the July 21 mega-rally in Kolkata (Ekushe July Shahid Dibas), leader after senior leader of Trinamool Congress gave calls to take strong measures to unseat the BJP from power.

Given below are the gists of what the senior leaders spoke.

Abhishek Banerjee

I salute and welcome those who have come here today. I am here today to take directions from our Chairperson, Mamata Banerjee. People have come to Dharmatala from various places far and wide. We congregate here every year. July 21 is not a mere date; neither is it just a date for deciding on action. July 21 is an emotion, a sign of pride, the identity of Trinamool. Those who are not aware of July 21 have no right to work for Trinamool.

Last year during the July 21 rally, we had taken a pledge to win the zilla parishad seats during the panchayat elections, and we had kept our promise by winning the 20 zilla parishads.

Today we have to take another pledge – to decimate the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. If so needed we are ready to give our lives but we’ll never tolerate insult. Trinamool cannot be scared using the CBI and ED. If people are hurt, we’ll never keep quite.

The Prime Minister had come to Bengal sometime back. He supposed addressed a Krishi Kalyan rally but even with a microscope one wouldn’t have been able to discern a single farmer at the meeting.

A pandal broke down at their rally of a mere ten to twelve thousand people. They can’t even take proper care of such a small rally, how will they take care of Bengal? A pandal broke down in 2018, in 2019, their Government will break into pieces.

Partha Chatterjee

There are no parallels to the way Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has stood up against every form of injustice – from snatching away people’s precious savings to rising prices. Today we will hear from her the future course of Trinamool Congress.

Sudip Bandyopadhyay

The country’s politics is going through a torrid phase. If there is any Chief Minister at present capable of ruling keeping communal harmony and unity in place, that person is Mamata Banerjee. This has been endorsed by other Chief Minister of the country.

Subrata Bakshi

This rally is being watched not only by people in Bengal but all across the country. It would send the message everywhere that there is no other party in India so organised as Trinamool Congress.

Suvendu Adhikari

Like every year this year too we are paying our respects to the martyrs and their families. All around is a sea of heads. Whatever direction Mamata Banerjee will give, we will follow. During the elections many media outlets and Opposition parties had said a lot of negative things about Trinamool Congress, but the soil of Bengal is the secure base of Trinamool Congress. Trinamool cannot be stopped by threats. Congress is now with CPI(M) and another party is just interested in killing and destroying. The members of these parties are the worst kind of people. We are vowing to defeat them 42-0 at the next Lok Sabha elections. Remove BJP and save the country.

Subrata Mukherjee

We had removed corruption from Bengal, now another party has come to corrupt the State. We will defend Bengal with our last drop of blood. Today the country is directionless. The Prime Minister has not delivered on any of his promises. The poor are spending sleepless nights. After the setting of the sun of CPI(M), it is the turn of the BJP now. A new sun will rise over the country.

Chandrima Bhatrtacharya

Our leader Mamata Banerjee has shown how to give respect to women. We are simply her soldiers. The belief of the people on Mamata Banerjee has increased manifold, so we could win many more seats in 2016 than in 2011. A party which has so many women as leaders cannot be defeated. Today is a day for making a new pledge – we will become a stronger party in the future, this is our pledge.

10 points Mamata Banerjee said at the July 21 Shahid Dibas rally

1. We will launch ‘BJP Bharat Chharo Andolan’ from August 9, and will continue at block level till August 30. 18 Opposition parties have come together. We will have a bigger alliance in future. Political arithmetic says Modi Babu will not get even 30% votes in 2019. BJP will not get any seat in Bengal. Saradha or Narada will not be able to save ‘Barda’ (the BJP) in 2019. We have had a history of struggle. We fought against the CPI(M) and drove them out of power. Bengal is with Sonia ji, Lalu ji, Omar Abdullah and everyone who is fighting against the BJP.

We are like royal Bengal tigers. Trinamool must inspire all of India. Let’s show India the way. We will fight for our nation and speak up strongly. ‘Karenge ya Marenge’ – We will save Bengal from BJP. We will fight against the dangabaaz. We will throw the party of rioters out of Bengal. This is our challenge.

2. July 21 is the day we decide our future course of action. 2018 will be the 25th anniversary of July 21 Shahid Dibas. We will observe it as ‘Angikaar Dibas’ which will stand for hope, struggle for existence of all people, the tribals and marginalised. The day stands for democracy and the rights of the downtrodden. The Judicial Commission report says July 21 was a conspiracy in which 13 people were killed in police firing and thousands injured. We will take action against those who fired bullets on that day. All cases lodged against youth activists by the then CPI(M) Govt in July 1993 will be withdrawn. We believe in political courtesy. We will not touch Jyoti Babu or Buddha Babu. Fresh compensation of Rs 2 lakh will be paid to every shahid family.

3. We are not sure if the rights of the people will be secure under this govt at the Centre. Who are they to decide on what one can eat? They are telling pregnant women not to eat non-veg. In the name of gau-raksha, a gau-rakshas has been unleashed on the country. They want Aadhaar even before kids are born. They are depriving students of mid-day meals for Aadhaar. Now should we also need Aadhaar for bathing and getting married? The Centre is bulldozing everyone. What is happening to the right to privacy? They even want to link Aadhaar with mobile numbers.

4. Counter BJP on social media. Bring all fake news to our notice. Complain to the police. Photos of Comilla (Bangladesh), Gujarat riots and even a Bhojpuri film clip are being shared as those of violence in Bengal. Cyber crime is a big crime, we are monitoring such posts. We respect Facebook, not ‘Fakebook’.

5. We will celebrate Sampriti Dibas on August 7 (Rakhee Bandhan). The Bengal Govt will also observe Sampriti Dibas on that day. Police will form ‘Shanti Vahini’ in every area. Do not allow the BJP to incite riots. True Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians do not riot. A few goons with ulterior motives do that. Trinamool workers must take a pledge today to thwart any attempts to foment communal tension in Bengal. Let’s take a solemn pledge today to stop any form of communal hostility.

6. Trinamool is the most vocal party against the Centre. So we are targeted the most. But Chorer maayer boro gola. No CBI probe into the corruption in Rajasthan, on Vyapam in MP or on the Reddy brothers in Karnataka. Why is there no CBI probe into the petroleum scam in Gujarat? Trinamool spoke out against demonetisation, so they unleashed the CBI. We spoke against the GST, and they sent the ED. Trinamool does not need character certificate from the BJP. Saradha chit fund was formed during the CPI(M) rule. Has any CPI(M) leader been arrested?

7. The RBI has not yet been able to tell the nation how much black money has been recovered. To recover just Rs 11 crore, they imposed demonetisation. Now GST has ruined the textile industry. GDP growth has dipped. GVA growth in industry sector has come down. There have been job losses in 8 core sectors. Bank credit growth of 10% in 2015-16 has come down to 5% in 2016-17. Economy is on a downward spiral.

8. Over 12,000 farmers have committed suicide across the country. We have done away with tax on farm land. Modi Sarkar has failed on the economic front. Demonetisation was a huge scam. GST will give rise to corruption. Trade and industry have been affected; even the sweet industry is affected due GST. Gujarat’s heera (diamond) has 3% tax while Bengal’s jeera has 14% tax!

9. Dalits, Muslims, even Hindus who criticise the govt are being attacked. Journalists speaking out are losing their jobs. Media houses in Delhi have sold themselves out. They are doing dalali. One channel (beginning with R) has been started with the money from RAW. Amartya Sen is not safe under this regime in Delhi. Paranjoy Guhathakurta had to lose his job.

10. The Centre has soured relationships with all neighbouring countries. Bengal shares borders with Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh. Kalidas (referring to Centre) is cutting the branch he is sitting on. We fight like a royal Bengal tiger. It is not easy to defeat us. Hindus, Dalits, minorities, Advasis, the SC/ST, media, sportspersons, intellectuals, artistes are all safe in Bengal. Let them first challenge a July 21 turnout. Then come and challenge us. Arrest 30 lakh workers of Trinamool. If you arrest one of us, another worker will be born.

Slice of Bengal on display at Dharmatala on the occasion of Shahid Dibas

The July 21 mega-public meeting today on the occasion of Shahid Dibas turned into a display of a slice of Bengal.

The stage hosted stalwarts from various fields of arts, sports and culture. People from all walks of life came to the rally in huge numbers to pay tributes to the martyrs of the July 21, 1993 police firing.

Celebrity singers like Nachiketa, Kabir Suman and Indranil Sen enthralled the crowd with their patriotic songs. Several personalities from the Bengali film and television fraternity were present. The Trinamool Congress Chairperson, Mamata Banerjee spoke to each of them individually.

Near the main dais, there was a list of the 13 people who were martyred on July 21, 1993, even as LED screens displayed the proceedings on the dais for the huge gathering of supporters that stretched up to 2km from the venue. Medical camps were set up at various points.

People in all their colours were seen everywhere. From Cooch Behar to Jangalmahal, they came from every corner of Bengal to commemorate July 21.

The Esplanade East area saw colourful dance performances by the Tusu dancers of Jangalmahal, sakhi dancers of Mukutmanipur, tribal dancers of Bankura, chhau dancers of Purulia and dhakis. They won the hearts of the people through their performances.

There were tableaux depicting the history of July 21. People came adorned in the colours of the party – be it cutouts of the party symbol or tricolour shirts and kurtas or decorative headdresses. Teenagers to the elderly braved the possibility of showers to attend the meeting.

It was a spontaneous outpouring of the Maa-Mati-Manush of Bengal.

Turnout for this year’s July 21 will break all records: Abhishek Banerjee

National President of Trinamool Youth Congress, Abhishek Banerjee speaks to the press after overseeing the arrangements of 21 July Shahid Dibas rally:

Nearly 22,000-24,000 people have already arrived in Kolkata for the July 21 rally. We are making arrangements for them in our limited capacities. We have set up tents and made arrangements for food so that our workers do not face any problem. District presidents and MLAs who are in charge are present. We are all working unitedly.

Going by the response and enthusiasm of the people, we are expecting a record turnout for the rally. Every year the rally breaks the record of the previous year. 2014’s record was broken in 2015; the record turnout of 2015 was surpassed in 2016. Now, 2017 will break the record of 2016.

Despite the vilification campaign and propaganda, the popularity of Mamata Banerjee has not diminished by even one per cent. This proves that she enjoys the support of people. They continue to shower their love and blessings on her. People have time and again voted in favour of development and will continue to support Mamata Banerjee as long as she is there. The conspiracies of those who want to communally polarise Bengal stand defeated.

In a few hours we will know what direction for the future our leader Mamata Banerjee will give. At present, the nation is at such a juncture where certain elements are trying to destabilise Bengal in the name of religion. We have to work unitedly against such forces and defeat their machinations.

Bengal had been turned into a graveyard during the 34 year old Left rule. We fought unitedly against them and were successful in dislodging them from office. Mamata Banerjee has a long history of struggle. It would be unfair to compare her with any other leader. Trinamool was formed after a long struggle. We are ready to fight again.

We do not work for the people only during elections. We are with them all through the year. Through various developmental schemes and programmes, we are continuously serving the Maa, Mati, Manush of Bengal. Our leader Mamata Banerjee’s motto is to be with people, all the time. We follow in her footsteps.

Those who were with the CPI(M) in the past have switched camps to the BJP. Those who adorned red t-shirts earlier now wear saffron kurtas. Leaders like Laxman Seth, who was responsible for Nandigram, have now joined the BJP. Even Mamata Banerjee has said, these people are CPI(M) supporters during the day and work for BJP at night. Even in the bypolls we have seen that CPI(M) votes have gone to the BJP. But these things do not bother us. Trinamool is number one. We are not worried about who comes second or third.

Mamata Banerjee re-established democracy in Bengal. We have to uphold the unity, harmony, democracy in the State. The surge of development will continue.

We will answer all attempts of slander on Ekushe July: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Youth Congress President Abhishek Banerjee addressed a mass rally yesterday at Dakshin Barasat Football Ground, Joynagar which was a curtain raiser for the 21st July Saheed Divas commemoration calling for a more stronger resistance to the collective slander campaign by the opposition parties. “CPM-Congress-BJP are trying to take on Trinamool with their informal coalition. They have nothing to say against each other but are busy instigating violence between Hindus and Muslims. We will not let them succeed in their ill actions. The people are with us”, he said.

The Trinamool Youth Congress President said, “We will answer all attempts of slander on the 21st of July. We will begin our fight from the stage of ‘Ekushe july’. The slander against the party and the Government is increasing every day. But just as the slander is increasing, the support of the people in the party’s favour is also increasing. Our victory in the Panchayat, Lok Sabha and Municipal elections is a proof of that.”

Those present at the mass rally were AITC secretary general Partha Chatterjee, district president Sovan Chatterjee, MP Pratima Mondal, Dy Speaker Sonali Guha among others.

More than one lakh activists to attend 21 July rally from North 24 Prgs: Abhishek Banerjee

Trinamool Youth Congress and AITC MP Abhishek Banerjee addressed a huge mass meeting at the Basirhat College Ground in North 24 Parganas on Monday. The meeting is a part of a series of curtain raiser for the main event, 21 July Saheed Divas. Abhishek will hold more than 12 such mass meetings at different points of the State.

More than one lakh people from the district of North 24 Parganas will participate on the Saheed Divas on July 21, 2015, he said.

The AITC Youth Congress President, while comparing the past Left Government with the present Trinamool Congress Government said that the years prior to 2011 were marked with incidents of violence and terror while post 2011, Bengal has seen projects like Kanyashree and Yuvashree. He said that in terms of developmental works, the present Trinamool Government is way ahead of the past Left Government or even the present Government at the Centre.
