In a welcome news for the people of Kolkata, hilsa or ilish has been discovered in a 15-hectare water body in New Town, on the outskirts of Kolkata. Purified water from this lake is supplied to parts of Kolkata.

The Fisheries Department has started tending to the fish with special care as the crop can satisfy a big portion of the demand in Kolkata. This discovery was made recently when a team from the State Fisheries Department had gone there to inspect it.

According to officials, the presence of hilsa is because the lake is connected to the Hooghly through canals, and during high tide some of the hatchlings find their way into the lake from the canals.

The lake is a freshwater lake, and the hilsa found in such water is called ‘jhatka’. On an average, each fish weighs 300 to 400 grams.

 

 

নিউ টাউনের ইলিশ এখন কলকাতাবাসীর পাতে

কলকাতাবাসীর জন্য সুখবর। নিউ টাউনের ১৫ হেক্টর জলাভুমিতে সন্ধান মিলল ইলিশ মাছের। এই লেকের পরিস্রুত জল কলকাতার অনেক অঞ্চলে পাঠানো হয়ে থাকে।

মৎস্য দপ্তর ইতিমধ্যেই এই ব্যাপারে খুব আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করেছে, কারণ এখান থেকে মাছ পাওয়া গেলে কলকাতার বেশ কিছু অঞ্চলের মাছের যোগান দেওয়া যাবে।

আধিকারিকদের মতে এখানে ইলিশ মাছ পাওয়া যাওয়ার কারণ হল এই লেকটি খালের মাধ্যমে হুগলী নদীর সঙ্গে যুক্ত। জোয়ারের সময় চারা মাছেরা খাল হয়ে এই লেকে ঢুকে পড়ে।

এই লেকটি মিষ্টি জলের, এখানে যে ইলিশ মাছ পাওয়া যায়, তাকে বলে “ঝটকা”, প্রতিটি মাছের গড় ওজন ৩০০ থেকে ৪০০ গ্রাম।
