The State Forest Department is exploring the possibility of a sensor-based technology to track the various sounds made by elephants to track their exact location. The move is a significant stride towards mitigating the problem of elephant deaths on railway tracks in north Bengal.

This will be the first time in the country that such a technology will be used, said a senior official of the Forest Department.

He said that the high-frequency sounds made by an elephant are audible but they also make low-frequency sounds that are inaudible to the human ear; this is where the technology will help. The technology will use artificial intelligence to recognise such sound within a fixed radius

The trials will be held either in Gorumara or Mahananda National Park in September. The Wildlife Institute of India will be making the technology analysis while the Forest Department will be providing field support.

The official also said that if the technology is found to be effective, it will be integrated to the mobile communication used by train drivers so that they get SMS alerts on their phones.

It may be mentioned that the Forest Department has been trying to identify a cost-effective technology to prevent deaths of pachyderms on railway tracks of north Bengal. A two-day workshop was held in Chalsa in November last year, hosted by the department, which was attended by scientists and experts on forest and wildlife across the country.

The Bengal Forest department is planning to set up check posts in Gorumara and Lataguri to check the speed limit of vehicles which often lead to accidents killing wild animals.

The Forest department has taken up an elaborate scheme to set up two check posts along the two forest ranges beside National Highway-31. The Forest department has also fixed the upward limit of speed at 40 kmph along the stretches that go through the forest areas. CCTVs will also be installed at the check posts.

The Forest department officials believe that the move will be able to check the deaths of animals by accidents.

যানবাহনের গতিবেগ নিয়ন্ত্রণ করতে গরুমারা ও লাটাগুড়িতে চেক পোস্ট তৈরি করছে রাজ্য বন দপ্তর।

দ্রুত গতিতে গাড়ি চালানোর ফলে অনেক সময়ই এখানে পশুমৃত্যু ঘটে। এই উদ্যোগের ফলে ৩১ নম্বর জাতীয় সড়কে যেমন দুর্ঘটনা কমবে, তেমনই বন্যপ্রাণীদের মৃত্যুও এড়ানো যাবে।

গরুমারা-লাটাগুড়ি অঞ্চলে গতিবেগের সীমা ঘন্টায় ৪০ কিমি বেঁধে দিচ্ছে বনদপ্তর। চেকপোস্টগুলিতে বসানো হবে সিসিটিভি।

বন্যপ্রাণী মৃত্যু এড়ানো ছাড়াও এর ফলে তাদের বিরক্ত প্রবণতাও কমানো যাবে বলে মনে করা হচ্ছে।

Many of the one-horned rhinoceros of Gorumara and Jaldapara national parks will soon get new homes as the state government has prepared natural habits by developing two other parks — one of which is situated close to Gorumara and the other at Patlakhawa in Cooch Behar.

There are currently more than 255 one-horned rhinos in Gorumara and Jaldapara. Bengal Forest Minister said that the department has a plan to shift around 50 one-horned rhinos to the new forest parks that are coming up in North Bengal.

Natural habitats are there in two new parks where the rhinos would be shifted. The department has also taken up various schemes to build infrastructure. The project aims at the promotion and conservation of the endangered species.

This project will also help in promoting tourism in north Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has laid great stress in promoting tourism in north Bengal besides other places.

 

এবার নতুন ঠিকানা পেতে চলেছে বাংলার এক শিংওয়ালা গন্ডার

গরুমারা ও জলদাপাড়া ন্যাশানাল পার্কের এক শিংওয়ালা গন্ডাররা শীঘ্রই নতুন ঠিকানা পেতে চলেছে। রাজ্য সরকার ২টি নতুন পার্ক তৈরি করেছে তাদের জন্য। একটি গরুমারার কাছে ও অন্যটি কোচবিহারের পাতলাখাওয়া’য় নতুন পার্ক তৈরি করেছে রাজ্য বন দপ্তর।

এই মুহূর্তে গরুমারা ও জলদাপাড়া জাতীয় অভয়ারণ্যে এক শিংওয়ালা গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা ২৫৫র বেশী। রাজ্যের বনমন্ত্রী বলেন, আনুমানিক ৫০টি এক শিংওয়ালা গন্ডারকে নতুন পার্ক দুটিতে স্থানান্তরিত করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে বনদপ্তর। পরিকাঠামো তৈরির জন্য নেওয়া হয়েছে অনেক পদক্ষেপ।

এই উদ্যোগের ফলে উত্তরবঙ্গে পর্যটনেরও বিকাশ হবে। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় চিরকালই উত্তরবঙ্গে পর্যটনের ওপর জোর দিয়েছেন।

The rhinos of Bengal will soon get two new homes in the northern part of the state. Owing to “excess“ population of the one-horned rhino in two national parks of north Bengal – Jaldapara and Gorumara – the State is planning to relocate a few animals to two new locations.

State Forest Mnister said they have identified two areas in Buxa Tiger Reserve and Cooch Behar’s Patlakhawa, which can be developed as rhino reserves. The state is waiting for a clearance from the Centre before finalizing the plan.

“We have more than 255 rhinos in Jaldapara and Gorumara. The number is more than the carrying capacity of both parks. Hence, we are planning to relocate a few rhinos,“ the minister said.

While Jaldapara is home to about 200 of these rhinos, Gorumara has more than 50 of them.

গণ্ডারদের থাকার জন্য দুটি নতুন জায়গা তৈরির পরিকল্পনা করছে বন বিভাগ

রাজ্যের উত্তর অংশে গণ্ডারদের জন্য শীঘ্রই দুটি থাকার জায়গা তৈরি করা হচ্ছে। উত্তরবঙ্গের জলদাপাড়া এবং গোরুমারায় একশৃঙ্গ গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা বেড়ে যাওয়ার কারণে রাজ্যের বনদপ্তর তাদের অন্য জায়গায় স্থানান্তরিত করার সিদ্ধান্ত নিয়েছে।

রাজ্যের বন মন্ত্রী বলেন, তারা বক্সা টাইগার রিজার্ভ এবং কোচবিহারের পাতলাখাওয়ায় দুটি জায়গা চিহ্নিত করেছে, যেখানে গণ্ডার সংরক্ষণ করা সম্ভব হবে। রাজ্য এই পরিকল্পনাকে বাস্তবায়িত করার আগে এখন কেন্দ্রের অনুমোদনের জন্য অপেক্ষা করছে।

মন্ত্রী বলেন, “জলদাপাড়া এবং গোরুমারায় ২৫৫ টি গণ্ডার রয়েছে। এলাকা অনুযায়ী গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা অনেক বেড়ে গেছে। সেজন্য আমরা গণ্ডারগুলিকে স্থানান্তরিত করার পরিকল্পনা করেছি”।

জলদাপাড়ায় গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা ২০০ হলে গোরুমারার গণ্ডারের সংখ্যা আরও ৫০টি বেশি।

The state government is planning to set up green corridor at Mal sub-division of Jalpaiguri district adjacent to Garumara sanctuary which will not only present pollution free environment but will also create employment in the area.
The district administration has a plan to start the work of setting up green corridor in various blocks of Jalpaiguri after Pujas.

Around 5 lakh people from across the state and abroad visit Dooars every year. The proposed green corridor would come up in the area like Lataguri, Moulani under Mal block and Batabari, Baradighi and Chalsa and other adjoining areas of Metli block.

Local families, hotels, resorts, schools would be included in the project. Various bio-degradable elements, kitchen produces collected from the hotels and resorts could be utilised for preparing organic manure.

জলপাইগুড়ি জেলায় সবুজ করিডোর বানানোর উদ্যোগ রাজ্যের

পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সরকার পরিকল্পনা নিয়েছে জলপাইগুড়ি জেলার মাল মাহকুমায় গরুমারা অভয়ারণ্য লাগোয়া অঞ্চলে একটি সবুজ করিডোর তৈরী করার। এর ফলে পরিবেশ দূষণ যেমন কমবে, তেমনি কর্মসংস্থানও তৈরী হবে।

দূর্গাপুজোর ঠিক পরেই এই সবুজ করিডোর তৈরীর কাজ শুরু করবে জেলা প্রশাসন। মাল ব্লকের লাটাগুড়ি, মৌলানি, মেটলী ব্লকের বাটাবাড়ি, বড়দিঘি, চালসা অঞ্চলে সবুজ করিডোর তৈরী হওয়ার কথা।

দেশি ও বিদেশি মিলিয়ে আনুমানিক পাঁচ লক্ষ পর্যটক প্রতি বছর জলপাইগুড়ি আসেন। এর ফলে তারাও উপকৃত হবে।

এই অঞ্চলের বিভিন্ন পরিবার, স্কুল, হোটেলগুলিকে এই সবুজ করিডোরে যুক্ত করা হবে। হোটেল বা বাড়িগুলি থেকে বিভিন্ন বায়ো-ডিগ্রেডেবল আবর্জনা সংগ্রহ করে জৈবিক সার উৎপাদন করা হবে।

West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation has come up with two new tour packages. One is for Kolkata, called ‘New City Tour’ and the other is for the Dooars region.

The ‘New City Tour’ is exactly that – a day trip through some of the newer places of interest. The spots include Nicco Park, Arts Acre, Mother’s Wax Museum and Eco Park (Prakriti Tirtha). It would start from and end at the Tourism Centre in BBD Bag. The tour is priced at Rs 1050 per head (including vegetarian lunch and tax).

The Dooars tour – named ‘Dooars Package Tour’ – is a two nights-three days package for Rs 9200 per heard (including tax). It would start and end in Siliguri, covering the wildlife havens of Jaldapara, Gorumara and Buxa, and Cooch Behar.

পশ্চিমবঙ্গ পর্যটন নিগম ২ টি নতুন ভ্রমণ ব্যবস্থা চালু করতে চলেছে। একটি কলকাতার জন্য যার নাম ‘নিউ সিটি ট্যুর’ এবং দ্বিতীয়টি ডুয়ার্স এর জন্য।

‘নিউ সিটি ট্যুর’ হল একদিনের একটি প্যাকেজ যেখানে নতুন কিছু জায়গা দেখানো হবে। এখানে নিকো পার্ক,আর্টস একর, মাদার ওয়াক্স মিউজিয়াম এবং ইকো পার্ক ঘোরানো হবে। এই ভ্রমণ যাত্রা শুরু এবং শেষ হবে বিবাদী বাগে। মাথাপিছু ১০৫০ টাকা ধার্য (কর এবং নিরামিষ মধ্যাহ্নভোজ সমেত)।

‘ডুয়ার্স ভ্রমণ ব্যবস্থা’ এটি ২ রাত ৩ দিনের একটি প্যাকেজ, মাথাপিছু ৯২০০ টাকা (কর সমেত)। এই ভ্রমণ যাত্রার  শুরু এবং শেষ হবে শিলিগুড়িতেই। জলদাপারা, গরুমারা, বক্সা ও কুচবিহার ভ্রমণও রয়েছে এই প্যাকেজের মধ্যেই।

The West Bengal Tourism Department has decided to associate with the Public Works and Forest departments in order to modernize and expand infrastructural facilities and give a boost to tourism in the State.

While the PWD will construct more than 100 ‘Pather Sathis’ (attractive motels) alongside almost all the national and state highways across the state at a cost of more than Rs 20 crore, all forest ‘rest houses’ will be upgraded with essential gadgets like air-conditioners, LED television sets, geysers and refrigerators.

Motels facilitating pleasant connectivity to tourist spots would be handed over to the Tourism department by the PWD on completion for maintenance and formation of joint ventures wherever possible for quick recovery of costs.

Revenues earned by the Forest department would be shared by all stakeholders, including private partners, who would promote sales and guarantee upkeep of the facilities for weekend travelers.

Yet another novel method of attracting travelers– both domestic and foreign, would be the arrangement of short ‘home-stays’ deep inside forests with picturesque surroundings.

Promoted through enterprising ‘Forest Protection Committee’ members, these cosy nooks mostly in North Bengal, Dooars and Darjeeling (in places like Tagda, Chimney and Pokriata) would give private entrepreneurs, especially tea garden owners, a run for their money.

However, the most frequented facilities like Mirik, Jaldapara, Gorumara, Holong, Digha and Gangasagar will not be given lesser importance.
