The Bengal Government is constructing 45 cyclone shelters in the Sunderbans region of North 24 Parganas. These ‘multipurpose cyclone shelters’, as they are called, will protect people not only from cyclones but from all types of natural calamities like earthquakes, floods, etc.

After the competition of these, the district would be getting a total of 65 such shelters. Of the 20 being constructed in the first phase, the work for 19 is over.

These shelters are actually large houses but constructed on elevated platforms to protect from rising water levels.

The 45 would be constructed in the blocks of Hasnabad (five shelters), Hingalganj (nine shelters), Sandeshkhali-1 (12 shelters), Sandeshkhali-2 (15 shelters) and Minakha (four shelters). These five, and Haroa, comprise the Sundarbans region in North 24 Parganas.

Of these six, besides Haroa, the others lie in coastal areas, with the rivers Raimangal, Vidyadhari, Ichhamati, Dansa, Kulti and a few others flowing through them.

সাইক্লোন, ভূমিকম্প, বন্যা সহ বিভিন্ন প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয়ের সময়ে দুর্গত মানুষদের আশ্রয় দিতে উত্তর ২৪ পরগনার সুন্দরবন অঞ্চলে আরও ৪৫টি নতুন ‘মাল্টিপারপাস সাইক্লোন সেন্টার’ তৈরি করছে রাজ্য সরকার।

এর আগে এই জেলাতেই এই ধরনের ২০টি সেন্টার তৈরি হয়েছে। ফলে, নতুন ৪৫টির কাজ শেষ হলে মোট ৬৫টি মাল্টিপারপাস সাইক্লোন সেন্টার হবে এই জেলায়। এর ফলে কয়েক হাজার মানুষ উপকৃত হবেন। ইতিমধ্যে প্রতিটি জায়গাতেই কাজ শুরু হয়েছে। এই সেন্টারগুলি জি-প্লাস-টু অর্থাৎ তিনতলা হবে।

চলতি আর্থিক বছরে যে ৪৫টি নতুন মাল্টিপারপাস সাইক্লোন সেন্টার তৈরি হচ্ছে, তার মধ্যে সন্দেশখালি-২নং ব্লকে ১৫টি, সন্দেশখালি-১নং ব্লকে ১২টি, হিঙ্গলগঞ্জে ন’টি, হাসনাবাদে পাঁচটি এবং মিনাখাঁয় চারটি তৈরি হচ্ছে। রাজ্য সরকারের বিপর্যয় ব্যবস্থাপনা দপ্তর এই সেন্টার তৈরি করছে।

অপেক্ষাকৃত উঁচু জায়গায় এইসব সেন্টার তৈরি হচ্ছে। যাতে প্রাকৃতিক বিপর্যয় হলেও সেখানে জল না জমে। প্রথম পর্যায়ের ২০টি সেন্টারের মধ্যে ১৯টির কাজ সম্পূর্ণ হয়ে গিয়েছে। একটির কাজ আংশিক বাকি। দ্বিতীয় পর্যায়ে ৪৫টির কাজ যাতে দ্রুত হয়, সে ব্যাপারে জেলা প্রশাসনের তরফে তদারকি করা হচ্ছে।
