Kolkata Police to set up one cyber crime cell in each of its 9 divisions

With the spurt in cyber crimes of various types, Kolkata Police has decided to set up a cyber crime cell in each of the nine police divisions in its jurisdiction. According to the police, there are a growing number of complaints of tech torment, especially from women.

The first two cyber crime cells have been planned to be in the Port and South Suburban divisions. Currently, there is only one such cell for the entire city – functioning from the police headquarters at Lalbazar.

The primary duty of the cyber crime cells will be to tackle trolling and provide the forensic back-up needed for investigating cyber offences. Complaints related to e-mail hacking, fake social media profiles and cheating through impersonation are common. A large number of such complaints are received from women.

On an average, around 200 cases are forwarded to the cyber crime cell at Lalbazar from the 79 police stations annually. Add to that the complaints the cell receives via emails and the social media. This year till May, the Lalbazar cell has received more than 1,700 complaints.

Last October, 86 posts had been created for tackling cyber crime. Apart from new recruits, select officers from police stations are being trained to investigate cyber offences.

Cyber crime police stations in every district

Cyber crimes are increasing day by day. Posts in poor taste, provocative posts, hacking others’ accounts, etc. on social media and other cyber crimes like banking frauds, etc. are on the rise here, as in so many places across the world.

To combat such online crimes originating in Bengal, the State Government has decided to firm up its cyber crime fighting capabilities. For a start, it is being planned to set up cyber crime police stations in the districts.

Right now there is a cyber crime setup at the police headquarters in Lalbazar, Kolkata. However, having only one such unit hampers proper investigations of such crimes.

The State Police Department is now carrying on a study on which districts to set up the cyber crime-fighting units in, depending on where most crimes emanate from. Gradually such units will be set up in all the districts.

A group of police personnel are given special training on how to handle such crimes. Officers to operate from these district-based cyber crime police stations would be selected from this group. The computers in the police stations would be installed with the special software.

Plans are on to open some police stations this year itself. Budget requirements are being prepared. The Police Department would send the proposals to the Government soon.

There is need for communicative policing: WB CM

WB CM Ms Mamata Banerjee today gave away service awards at the 12th Investiture Ceremony of West Bengal Police, held at Nazrul Mancha. She appreciated the hard work that is done by the police in ensuring peace and stressed on the importance of ‘communicative policing’.

Hooghly has been honoured with Best District in the state for performance of the State Police.

“Those who perform well must be rewarded. Police takes care of the law and order. We must take care of their well-being. We have started Pratyasha scheme, started housing scheme for police force. Constables who serve for 15 years can now be transferred to their home districts,” she said.

The State Government has created 57 new police stations, 20 new women’s police stations, 14 postal police stations and 5 cyber police stations and almost 400 new sub inspectors. About 40,000 constables and 1.3 lakh civic police  have been recruited.

West Bengal Police has also been involved in organising sports events for the youth in Jangalmahal, Darjeeling and Sunderbans.

The Chief Minister urged the police to use less force in solving any crisis. “In today’s world, policing has to be done with common sense more than lathis and gas,” she said.

She also had a word of caution to the state police when she said, “Some people are trying to incite riots. Police’s work has become even more crucial.”

She assured the policemen for full co-operation from her government and urged them to carry the good work. “Police work round the clock, everyday of the year. This is exemplary. Without their support, it is not possible for servicemen to work. Some people only criticize. They do not see the humane side of the police,” she added.
