Lead role for Bengal in new company to mine Birbhum coal

Bengal today led the creation of a new coal company nearly two centuries after it pioneered coal mining in India.

Bengal Birbhum Coalfields, where the state has the largest share, held its first board meeting in the city today, kicking off the process of tapping into arguably one of the bigger coal mines of the country.

The company plans to mine coal from the blocks which have an estimated reserves of around 2 billion tonnes. Bengal will have a 28 per cent share of the total production pie, the largest among all.

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced the name of the company on Twitter and also posted on Facebook: “Bengal Birbhum Coalfields Ltd (BBCL), a new baby is born today. The new company will develop India’s largest coal mine in Deocha-Pachami, Birbhum, which is estimated to have more than 2 billion tonnes of coal. The mine will supply coal to the power plants in Bengal and other states. Lakhs and lakhs of employment will be created and socio-economic infrastructure of the region will change radically, giving a huge boost to the economy and large benefits to the people.”

Mamata Banerjee’s tweets:

Heritage tourism circuit in Birbhum

Birbhum tourism is not just about Tagore’s Santiniketan. The district has a host of traditional temples which have heritage value and also unique architecture. Tourists can now take an interest in it on their way to Santiniketan via Burdwan.

Prodded by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the state tourism department has come up with a Rs 20 crore plan to develop a heritage eco tourism circuit in Birbhum.

The authorities have already started building lodges and cottages and will revamp the areas surrounding Tarapith, Bakreswar and Kenduli. The plan is to develop a tourism circuit around Tarapith, Bakreswar, Kendua and Santiniketan. The thrust will be on heritage and eco-tourism.

The Birbhum district administration will be assisting the tourism department in implementing the project. A meeting was held between the officials of tourism department and Birbhum district administration to chalk out plans.

A beautification programme will also be taken up in Tarapith, surrounding the temple, where the roads will be beautified. A tourist lodge will be set up at Tarapith where about 80 visitors could be accommodated. The authorities have already started setting up tourist cottages in Bakreswar.

Plans are also on to provide shelters to the ‘sadhus’ there. Landscaping will also be done along the Dwaraka river. Welcome entry gates will be set up at Jaydeb and Kenduli.

The tourism department also has plans to initiate a public private partnership (PPP) project on a nine-acre plot in Santiniketan to develop eco-tourism.

WB CM personally monitors flood relief operations from Nabanna

The excessive rain for the past two days coupled with high tide and water released from Jharkhand and Odisha has rendered the flood situation in West Bengal “beyond control”, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Sunday.

She advised people in vulnerable areas to take shelter in relief camps to avoid “untoward incidents”.

“In the last four years, there has been no flood like this year’s. So far, we have witnessed man-made floods and we have restricted them quite successfully. But the situation at present is rendered beyond control,” Banerjee told reporters at the state secretariat Nabanna on Sunday.

“I know that it is difficult to stay out of home but life is priority. So you must stay in relief camps for two, three days,” Banerjee said, advising people in vulnerable areas to take shelter at relief camps.

Yesterday, I had said that there was 61 percent excess rainfall. Today, it’s 70 percent excess rainfall, she said.

Holding the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) responsible for releasing excess water resulting in floods in the state, Banerjee said, “DVC is doing business…We love them but that does not mean they will submerge Bengal.”

“Two years ago, we had written to the Centre that more than two lakh cusecs of water can be reserved in DVC reservoir only if dredging is done. I will again write to them,” she said.

The Chief Minister earlier held a meeting with Chief Secretary, DGP, IG Law and Order, IG Police and Disaster Management Secretary.
