Trinamool hits the streets to protest against killing of Bengalis in Assam

Five persons were shot dead in Assam’s Bishnoimukh village in Assam. The attack occurred near Dhola-Sadiya bridge in Tinsukia district around 7 PM on Thursday.

After condemning the attack, Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee questioned if the killings were in retaliation to the National Register of Citizens in the state. Over 40 lakh people face deportation from India as their names were excluded in the final draft of the list published on July 30.

“Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development,” Mamata Banerjee said in a statement on Twitter.

“We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest. The fifth victim in Tinsukia … Dhananjay Namashudra,” she added.

All India Trinamool Congress held protest marches across Bangla today to condemn these dastardly murders. A protest march was led by Abhishek Banerjee – MP and National President of Trinamool Youth Congress – from Jadavpur to Hazra.

Highlights of Abhishek Banerjee’s speech:

  • Yesterday we received the news of the brutal murder of 5 Bengalis in Tinsukia (Assam) at 10:30 PM. We had witnessed mass murders in the CPI(M) era. This incident is a stark reminder of those incidents.
  • We were instructed by our leader Mamata Banerjee last night itself from north Bengal at late night. Our workers received the news in the morning. We are thankful to all for this stupendous response in this short span of time.
  • When Afrazul was hacked to death in Rajasthan, Mamata Banerjee had instructed us to organise protests. We have hit the streets again today.
  • This is not a fight between Trinamool and BJP. This is not CPI(M) vs Trinamool. This is a fight to preserve the Bengali culture. This is fight for the right of Bengalis. This fight is against BJP’s politics of oppression and forcible occupation. We will work as per the directions given by Mamata Banerjee.
  • In the 80’s and 90’s, we had seen how CPI(M) used to kill farmers and then sermonise about their welfare. Now we are seeing so-called pro-Hindu BJP killing Hindus. ‘Hindu mere Hindu prem, BJP shame shame.”
  • During Left rule, they used to raise the slogan ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ but discriminated among people based on political leanings. And now, BJP only says ‘Jai Shree Ram’ while fuel prices are skyrocketing.
  • The budget for Beti Bachao Beti Padhao is a meagre Rs 200 crore. And they built a statue worth Rs 3000 crore. On the other hand, they are killing Bengalis in Assam.
  • Many people from other States live in Bengal in peace. They have never been discriminated against. This is the culture of Bengal.
  • Today, many of my minority friends finished their namaz and joined these protests against the brutal murder of ‘Hindus’ in Assam. This is culture of harmony in Bengal.
  • Yesterday we heard reports that ULFA was involved in the incident. Today they have given a statement that they have nothing to do with the incident. Who were those people in police uniform, who murdered those five innocent people?
  • There must be a free and fair probe into this incident. The investigation must be monitored by the Supreme Court.
  • The Chief Minister of Assam must resign. Why are Bengalis committing suicide in Assam? Why was a famous singer attacked for singing a Bengali song in Guwahati?
  • Mamata Banerjee has categorically said NRC will not be implemented in Bengal.
  • Mamata Banerjee inaugurated at least 100 Durga Pujas in Kolkata. Have you seen any single flex by BJP during Sharadotsav? No. Because they believe in north Indian culture, not Bengali culture.
  • More than 100 people died in the queues during demonetisation. Farmers were killed in police firing in Madhya Pradesh. More than 80 children died due to lack of oxygen at a hospital in UP. This is the example of governance by BJP.
  • They are bringing leaders from other States. They have no idea about Bengali culture and dream of ‘capturing Bengal’.
  • We believe in politics of courtesy. But if they try to disrupt peace in Bengal, we will not tolerate it.
  • Let them compete on the basis of facts and figures. Let us compare the progress made by Bengal versus that of Centre.
  • In the coming days, our slogan should be ‘Du hajar unish, BJP finish. BJP hatao, desh bachao’.

Mamata Banerjee slams the BJP on NRC issue

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee launched a scathing attack against BJP president Amit Shah on the NRC issue on Tuesday.

Speaking at Nabanna, the state secretariat, she questioned the BJP chief and asked whether his parents had birth certificates.

The brutal attack came after Mamata Banerjee met a delegation from United Bengali Forum who had come from Assam to highlight their plight over the NRC issue.

“I want to ask Amit Shah, does his mother and father have birth certificates? If you ask me, I do not have my parent’s birth certificates. Would Swami Vivekananda have the certificates? Atal ji is ill now, so I cannot ask him, but I wish I could ask him whether he has all the certificates? One family can keep the record, not all. I belonged to a backward family, certificates were not maintained,” Mamata Banerjee said. She also said, “Would Gandhiji’s family have certificates?”

She went on to call the entire NRC exercise as politically motivated. “This is a political move ahead of the elections. Sometimes they (the Centre) will play India-Pakistan, sometimes they will play India-China. I am also hearing that they are getting the currency notes printed outside the country,” the CM alleged.

She alleged that Bengali-speaking population was being targeted. She claimed a majority of the 40 lakh who did not make it to the Assam draft list were a Bengali-speaking people.

“Of the total 40 lakh, 25 lakhs are Bengali Hindus, 13 lakhs Bengali Muslims and 2 lakh Nepalis, Biharis and others. I have shown you so many documents. People in Punjab and Pakistan speak the same language. People in Bengal and Bangladesh speak the same language. Isn’t Hindi and Urdu widely spoken in the country? If you do not like a particular community, you cannot spread hatred like this. Hasina ji (Bangla PM) is welcome, others not? Didn’t Bengal participate in the freedom struggle? What’s wrong in speaking the Bangla language?” she said.

She further said that even cows should now be given certificates to identify whether a cow is a refugee or an infiltrator. “My question is to all the Gau-rakshaks, is cow a refugee or an infiltrators. Make certificates for cows so that we know whether they are refugees or infiltrators. Amit Shah may not eat Hilsa fish. But people in Bangladesh, Bengal, UP and Bihar eat Hilsa fish. Is Hilsa a refugee or an infiltrator? This is super-emergency,” she claimed.

Trinamool observes ‘Black Day’

Trinamool Congress observed ‘black day’ in districts and blocks across the state on Saturday to protest against the “detention and manhandling” of its leaders in Assam’s Silchar airport, where they had gone to assess the situation after the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

The protest will continue on Sunday too. Carrying placards and sporting black masks and badges, TMC activists shouted slogans against the BJP governments at the Centre and Assam and the final draft of the NRC.

Trinamool Chairperson Mamata Banerjee had alleged that the members of the delegation, including women, were manhandled at the airport and accused the BJP of imposing a “super emergency” in the country.

Party’s Secretary-General Partha Chatterjee had said, “What happened to our party delegation is not only shameful but also undemocratic. Our slogan will be ‘we don’t need this monstrous government any more’.”

Day 2 of Trinamool’s countrywide protests against demonetisation and political vendetta

Today was the second day of Trinamool’s countrywide protests against demonetisation and political vendetta.

Trinamool MPs of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha held a sit-in demonstration at South Avenue for the second day. The dharna began with 2 minutes silence for the 120 people who lost their lives due to demonetisation. Several MPs – Saugata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Sisir Adhikari, Sultan Ahmed – made short speeches highlighting the sufferings of people every hour.

A dharna was organised just three kilometres away from the office of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in Bhubaneswar. Senior Trinamool Congress leaders including Secretary General of the party Partha Chatterjee, All India General Secretary, Subrata Bakshi, Chandrima Bhattacharya and Manish Gupta  attended the dharna.

Dharnas were also organised in front of CGO complex and RBI headquarters in Kolkata. They will continue even today.

Centre discriminating between tea garden workers of Bengal and Assam: Mamata Banerjee

Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday accused the Narendra Modi government of “discriminating” against the state by depriving tea garden workers of their wages, while providing the same to workers in BJP-ruled Assam.

“It is shocking that the Central government is ruthlessly discriminating against Bengal and its toiling tea garden workers by starving them of cash wages, while giving cash from RBI to workers in BJP-ruled state of Assam,” she said in a series of tweets.

“While both states started a similar payment model, suddenly Bengal’s payments were cut off at the end of November. Our workers are starving. I demand that RBI restores payment by our government through our DMs immediately and continue it till March next year,” she added.

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy speaks on recent attack in Kokrajhar

We share the agony and anguish with the Hon’ble member and also condemn the brutal attack on the people. But this is not the first time that this has happened. Someone has said that in December, 2014 such incident took place in that particular area of Kokrajhar and more than 70 people were killed and many injured.

There is 21 percent Bengali Muslim population in that district, bordering West Bengal, particularly in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal. During December, 2014 hundreds of villagers had to free to Cooch Behar district of West Bengal and our Hon’ble Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had to arrange for their shelter, foods, medical treatments etc. Now again this has happened and one of the Ministers from Assam is on record saying that it was not a planned attack. That is why Government did not have any information and the security forces reached the spot half an hour or one hour after the incident took place and this is why they could not prevent the incident.

But, Sir, this is not an isolated incident. This Kokrajhar district has suffered since long and the so-called Bodo agitation has going on and after the peace agreement of 2005, when people thought that everything will be improved. But again this is happening.

The clarification that I would like to seek from the Hon’ble Minister is that whether it is a case of intelligence failure. If that is the case, whether the Government of India is advising the State Government to take appropriate steps for improving the intelligence mechanism together with the Central Government to combat recurrence of such incidents in future in a diligent manner.
