Gheraos will not be tolerated at educational institutes: Partha Chatterjee

Trinamool Congress Secretary General Dr Partha Chatterjee on Tuesday sent out a strong message against gherao and demonstrations at educational institutes on Tuesday.
This is what he said:
  • Gheraos and demonstration will not be tolerated within the campus of colleges, universities.
  • By no means, the atmosphere of education within the colleges and universities will be compromised.
  • The party's students' wing should inform the leadership before undertaking any programme.
  • If a large number of students, supporters assemble in the university, decency is lost.
  • If students have to meet the vice-chancellor, a small team comprising around five members should do so with an appointment.

Centre has not done anything in six months, only beats own drums on social media: Mamata Banerjee

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee began her visit to the districts today, starting off with a meeting at Pailan in South 24 Parganas.
Today's meeting was attended by members of the Zilla Parishad, Municipalities, Panchayat Samitis, Gram Panchayats and the party's frontal organisations in the district. The Chairperson reviewed the activities of the party in the district and addressed a gathering of party workers.
The Chairperson formed a Steering Committee (to be headed by Joynagar MP Pratima Mandal) to monitor the work done at panchayat level. She asked all party wings to maintain coordination.
Here is what the Chairperson said at the meeting:
I congratulate all of you for maintaining an environment of peace and harmony during the festive season. I thank the people of all communities, castes, creed and religion for maintaining communal harmony. Carry forward the culture and heritage of Bengal.

I am thankful to the people of Bengal for showering their love on us. The sea of humanity today proves that even if we organize a meeting at Brigade grounds, the space will still be small.
Politics is not for minting money. Politics is meant for serving the people. Politics is all about dedication, determination, devotion. Politics requires sacrifice.
The posts that we have now are all given to us by the people. We will be in power as long as they want. We will continue to serve people. Our primary responsibility is to look after people
During the Left rule, CPM used BJP to split Opposition votes, so that they can win. Now CPM workers are joining the BJP. Now that BJP is in power at Centre, they are trying to incite riots in Bengal. I will not allow that as long as I am alive. The two flowers in Trinamool logo represent Hindu and Muslim. They represent agriculture and industry.

A section of the media is constantly engaging in smear campaign against the party. Some people think multi crore smear campaigns will help them in coming to power. BJP only beats its own drum on social media. Few parties are using money power. Small parties like ours who do not have money, how will we survive? Trinamool has always demanded electoral reforms.
I am answerable only to the people. Earlier journalists would risk their lives to show the truth. Sections of the media think they have become God.
When CPM was in power they incurred huge debts. Central Govt (under Cong and BJP) allowed them. After coming to power, we enacted the FRBM system. India has federal system. But are States economically autonomous? Delhi took away major part of our revenue. The new Central Govt wants to restrict MNREGA to a few blocks. Why would other blocks suffer?

Centre has deregulated the price of diesel and fertilizers. Fuel prices have come down drastically in the global market. Have prices come down in India in a proportional manner? When potato prices were hovering between Rs 60-80 in rest of India, in Bengal the price was Rs 22 only. The Centre has hiked FDI in defence. The Centre has no faith on our own scientists?
I have no problem if the section of media slanders me. But I will not tolerate any insult to the people of Bengal. The Left incurred debts. And we are paying for their sins. Centre is taking major share of our revenue. Centre is trying to deprive us of funds. We will fight back.

Bengal is No. 1 in 100 Days' Work Scheme. I have conducted 75 block-level meetings. Has any other Government conducted meetings at grassroots level? Our Govt does not sit idly in the Capital. We have started 8 new universities. A new women's university has started functioning at Diamond Harbour.
Till 2011, Bengal had only 1300 medical seats. We added 1400 new seats in the last 3 years. We have done away with the system of paying beds. We are selling medicines at 60% discount. We have started fair price medicine shops. And the Central Govt has hiked the price of life-saving drugs.
A section of the media glorified the chit funds, carried their ads. Chit funds started in Bengal during Left rule. Why did the Centre issue media licenses to the chit funds? Lending a hand of support to innocent sufferers is not corruption.
I love Bangladesh. That does not mean I support illegal infiltration. Terrorists do not have any religion, caste or creed. Blaming one community for the fault of one person is not right. Are they not ashamed of Babri Masjid demolition and Gujarat riots? Do you know there were communal clashes in Gujarat in September?
I also belong to a Hindu family. My culture teaches me to respect all religions. Swami Vivekananda had said Hinduism is a universal religion. He taught us to respect all religions. Ramakrishna Paramhansa taught us about unity of all religions. There is a masjid inside Belur Math. We respect Ramakrishna Mission. We also go to Furfura Sharif.
Inform local police stations and send a copy to the party HQ if you witness any untoward incident. Do not fall prey to the tactics of those who want to incite riots. Fire of riots will destroy everything. I believe in work culture. You must carry out the developmental works for poor people.
Those who think I am not aware of day-to-day activities of the party, are wrong. I have all the information. Corporation elections will be held on time. New generation of leaders will have to emerge from the youth. We have to shape them.
Bengal is No. 1 in skill development. We are setting up fair price diagnostic centres. Critical Care Units are coming up in every sub-divisional hospital. Our Kanyashree scheme has been praised all over the world. We have distributed over 2 lakh land pattas in the last 3 years. We started Nija Griha Nija Bhoomi scheme to empower landless and homeless people. Be positive.

Think positive. Stay positive. People watch your actions. If you commit some wrong, people blame the party. So, be careful about what you do. Discipline is very important in public life.

Solar-powered bus shelter comes up in Kolkata

In a first of its kind, the state government has set up a solar-powered bus shelter in the city in order to highlight the efficiency and practical application of solar energy.

Situated opposite the Kolkata Doordarshan Kendra, the bus shelter is already an attraction for local people and passerby. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), along with a city-based NGO, 'FREED' have come up with the initiative, which would produce 547 kW of electricity per year.
According to an environment expert, this would save three ton of coal per year resulting in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions up to 4.5 ton of carbon dioxide.

The project would create substantial environmental benefits by reducing of dependence on fossil fuel. Apart from the environmental aspect, the architecture of the bus shelter is designed with creative usage of heritage folk artisan of Bengal to promote the Khadi handicrafts. This would also add to the sustainable livelihood and markets for such handicrafts.
“If successful this would be implemented in the entire city. This is a new initiative and I think Kolkata would be a pioneer in using such green option,” Said Mr Arup Biswas state Housing and Youth Welfare minister.

State Agriculture department organises Krishi Unnayan Mela in Kalyani

The state Agriculture department and Confederation of Indian Industries will organise a three-day agriculture fair at Mohanpur in Kalyani from 5 November to train farmers on the latest irrigation, machineries and fertilisers.

State Agriculture Minister Mr Purnendu Bose said that for the first time the state government is jointly organising such a fair with a business confederation. This could also provide the farmers more opportunities to know the use of high-tech machineries for better harvesting. The fair will be held at  Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya (BCKV).

Several organisations and companies associated with other sectors like poultry, fisheries, dairy, horticulture, floricultures will participate in the fair. The name of the fair is 'Krishi Unnayan Mela', and will also exhibit agriculture-related products and services.

A separate session 'Krishak Pathshala' will be held regularly in order to educate and provide training to the farmers on farm mechanisation, enhanced cropping intensity, improvement in high-yielding varieties of seeds and other agro-related topics.

There will be buyer-seller meet and farmers could purchase equipment directly from the manufacturers. This will help farmers to purchase equipments on cheap rate as manufacturers will directly sell items. Several officials from different departments of the state government will participate in the fair.

Participants will come from first moving consumer goods (FMCG) related to agriculture sectors, food-processing sector, baking, insurance and financial institutes, educational sector, research and training institute, animal husbandry sector, cold storage, packaging and solar power sectors.

“This fair will also showcase major Indian agriculture, food processing machineries and equipments and explore possibility of setting up units which manufacture farm equipments,” said Mr Bose. It may be recalled that the state accounts for 30 per cent of potatoes, 27 per cent  of pineapples, 12 per cent of bananas and 16 per cent of India's rice production. Additionally fruits like mangoes, papaya, guava, and jackfruits and vegetables like tomatoes, cauliflowers, cabbage, brinjal and pumpkin are available in plenty.

WB Govt to set up farming machinery banks for small, marginal farmers

The West Bengal Government now has taken the initiative to set up a farming machinery bank. The initiative comes after the successful project of setting up seed banks. With the help of the farming machinery bank, the farmers of the state, who mostly belong to poor and marginal class, will be able to loan required machinery for cultivating their lands at a low cost.

With power tiller, Tractors, rotavetor, combined harvestors and drum seeders in store, the farmers, individually or in groups, will be able to loan such machinery, The Bank will decide what the charges will be for hiring the machinery, but cost will be minimum and affordable.

The State Government will give a maximum of Rs 24 lakh as subsidy to the investments made by the banks. Such a Bank may invest Rs 10 to 60 lakh for the machinery. Up to 35% of the loan amounts will be available from regional or cooperative banks too. A committee under the district magistrate will examine the applications and make the process faster.

It is expected that after the processes are in place, there will be a 30% increase in agricultural production in the state.

BJP trying to create unrest in Bengal: Partha Chatterjee

Trinamool Congress Secretary General, Dr Partha Chatterjee, Sunday accused BJP of trying to create unrest in the state by indulging in violence and alleged that other opposition parties like the CPI-M and the Congress were also providing support to its activities.

“BJP and other parties like CPI-M and the Congress are trying to create unrest in Bengal. Keeping BJP in the front, they are working to destabilise the state,” Dr Chatterjee said.

“There is no place for violence in Bengal. This is an attempt to stop development work being carried out by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee despite several roadblocks,” Dr Chatterjee added.

“These people are trying to destabilise the state by indulging in violence, but people of Bengal will not tolerate such activities,” he said.

Terming as political gimmick the BJP's attempt to reach relief materials like food and blankets to the affected people in Makhra, where prohibitory orders under Section 144 CrPC are in force for the last few days, Dr Chatterjee said, “Where were they for all these years? I have not seen them giving even puffed rice to anybody earlier.”

Trinamool Chairperson meets elected representatives of KMC

Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms Mamata Banerjee had convened a meeting of KMC MMICs, borough chairpersons and councillors for formulating the party strategy for the coming civic poll for KMC earlier today at the Kalighat party office.
Earlier, on 26 October, senior party leaders, MPs and MLAs held meeting with KMC MMICs, borough chairpersons and councillors at Trinamool Bhavan to chalk out the plan for the KMC poll due in 2015 May.
For today's meeting all the elected representatives of the municipal corporation had been asked to bring a summary of the works done in their respective areas.
“The party Chairperson will review the developmental works done in the areas herself,” Trinamool Congress Secretary General, Dr Partha Chatterjee had said on Sunday.
As the Chief Minister of the State, Ms Banerjee has been holding such meetings with her council of ministers twice a year.

KMC to spend Rs 400 crore for the development of Kolkata

Trinamool Congress-run Kolkata Municipal Corporation will spend Rs 400 crore for the development of Kolkata. Rs 155 crore out of this will be provided by the state and the rest of the money is coming from KMC's own revenue.

Kolkata Mayor Sovan Chatterjee on Friday held a meeting with his council members to finalize the projects and deadlines. Particular emphasis will be on wrapping up pending infrastructure work.

Water treatment plants

KMC hopes that the Dhapa water treatment plant on EM Bypass will be completed on time. It can deliver 100 million gallons of water a day. Once complete, this would be a boon to lakhs along the entire length of EM Bypass.

The Kolkata Mayor on Friday announced an allocation of Rs 45 crore for construction of booster pumping stations that will carry filtered water from the Dhapa plant to large areas in Beliaghata.

Garbage Compactors

Next on the priority list is cleanliness. He kept aside Rs 50 crore to set up garbage compactor stations across the city to phase out open vats that are such an ugly sight on city roads. This is one of the new projects planned in the Rs 400 crore package.

Development of slums

Next, the civic body will spend Rs 45 crore for development of slums. Basic amenities like supply of filtered water, sanitation and sewerage in slums will be set up. The board will focus on developing the sewerage network, especially where old brick sewers are under threat.

Beautification

The KMC will also spend Rs 10 crore for beautification of water bodies and parks. The mayor said tenders were being floated for these projects. “We will issue work orders as soon as the tender process is complete,” Chatterjee said.

Bengal showered with praise at investment road show in Delhi

West Bengal was showered with praises at an investment road show at FICCI's Federation House, where Dr Amit Mitra, State Finance and Industry Minister invited the business community to actively participate in the 'Bengal Global Business Summit' on January 7-8, 2015 in Kolkata.

Industrialists having presence in West Bengal said the state has a stable law and order situation, and a pro-active government, among others positive aspects.

Praise from industry captains

Mr Sidharth Birla, President, FICCI, dwelt on some of the important changes noticed by him in West Bengal as an investor. These changes mostly fall in the domain of policy and ease of doing business. “The State Government has not only come up with a new West Bengal Investment & Industrial Policy 2013 but also various sector specific policies in the areas like Textiles, MSME, ICT, to provide fillip to the industrial investments in the State. Many significant measures have been taken to improve the 'Ease of Doing Business' in West Bengal by introducing time bound, process driven and ICT enabled systems to bring more transparency and reduce red tape,” he said.

He stated that West Bengal has rich agricultural and mineral resources. The State has well developed rail, road and port infrastructure. Further, the qualified and skilled manpower coming out of centres of excellence and various technical institutes is a great asset. The cumulative impact of these factors makes West Bengal as one of the ideal destinations for industries like IT & ITES, food processing, textiles, leather goods, MSME, tourism and many other sectors.

Mr Harshavardhan Neotia, Vice President, FICCI, said that West Bengal has emerged as one of the favored investment destinations for investors. With the new policies in place the State Government has ensured 'ease of doing business', which is a big step towards encouraging investors.

Mr Puneet Dalmia, Managing Director, Dalmia Bharat Cement, said his experience of dealing with the State government was extremely positive. He is setting up a 1.5 million tonne per annum cement plant in the state with an investment for Rs 600 crore. “What we saw is totally different. Government is incredibly fast and decisive. We never had a better experience. We operate in 14 other states,” he said.

Mr Utsav Parekh, Director of Bengal Aerotropolis, which is building a Greenfield airport near Durgapur (in which Changi Airport of Singapore has 33 per cent stake), said Changi's maiden investment in any Greenfield project was a testimony of its faith on the state.

Turnaround in investor sentiment

Marking a turnaround in investor sentiment, West Bengal has “under process” Rs 78,263 crore investment and garnered proposals for another Rs 1.2 lakh crore, Dr Amit Mitra said at his speech. The upsurge is a result of government's pro-active approach towards business and industry with leading firms setting up shop, Dr Mitra said, adding that the momentum would gather more pace in the coming days.

“All are turning towards West Bengal. We have Rs 78,263 crore worth of investment under process which means that these are at various stages of completion. We also have Rs 1.2 lakh crore fresh investment proposals,” Dr Mitra said.

He said both large and medium sized business houses have evinced their interests in investing in West Bengal, huge investment opportunities exist in West Bengal in various sectors such as manufacturing, MSME, food processing, textiles, urban infrastructure and housing, IT software and hardware.

Bengal Global Business Summit

Dr Mitra also invited business community to actively take part in the two-day “Bengal Global Business Summit” to be held in Kolkata from January 7.

Highlighting some of the initiatives that the government has taken to ramp up industrial activity including creation of a 3,000 acre of land bank, he said to overcome siltation in the existing ports, a 18.5-metre deep sea port at Sagar Island is being jointly developed by the state and the Centre.

The state has also doubled its tax collections from Rs 21,000 crore to Rs 40,000 in 2013-14, he said adding the aim was to reach Rs 45,000 crore in the current financial year, Dr Mitra informed.
