WBKVIB to help artisans develop cotton khadi as per modern standards

The West Bengal Khadi and Village Industries Board (WBKVIB), buoyed by the success of Project Muslin, has taken up a project to further develop cotton khadi. The project will encompass 14 districts in the State.

At present, there is a huge demand for cotton khadi, both in domestic and international markets, mainly due to its eco-friendly nature.

Around 4,950 artisans will get the training and the project cost will be to the tune of Rs 16.52 crore. These artisans are now mostly producing traditional items of white khadi and conventional items of cotton khadi.

The main objectives of the project, according to the CEO of WBKVIB, are to train the artisans in churning out products as per the present market demand (in terms of design), provide them with the infrastructure to achieve that and create a platform for marketing their products.

The 14 districts that have been earmarked for the project are Birbhum, Malda, Murshidabad, Hooghly, Purba Bardhaman, Paschim Bardhaman, South 24 Parganas, North 24 Parganas, Howrah, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur, Nadia, Uttar Dinajpur and Dakshin Dinajpur.

It may be mentioned that there are about 115 khadi institutions and societies working in the area of cotton khadi production in Bangla at present.

Bangla CM slams BJP’s politics of hate and discrimination

Bangla Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today slammed the BJP for its politics of hate and discrimination. She was speaking at the Khelashree award ceremony. She said an atmosphere of fear prevailed in the country. CBI is hounding anyone who criticizes the BJP.

She also said that sting operations are being organised for money. From computers to internet, mobile phones to banks, even the privacy of people was under attack, she commented.

Highlights of her speech:

Industry is suffering due to GST and demonetisation. Sports and cultural fields are the biggest sufferers due to lack of sponsorship.

They are creating hurdles if someone wants to help the clubs. CBI is hounding them. People are afraid.

Do not be alarmed. Law will take its own course. They want to use state machinery for their political gain; this cannot be allowed.

They are spending money to conduct sting operations. They are recording personal conversations of friends, married couples, journalists, judges, industrialists.

From computers to internet, mobile phones to banks, even the privacy of people was under attack, she commented.

We organise Durga Puja, Christmas, Eid, Buddha Purnima. We all participate in festivities. This is our pride.

In Bangla, even if we have to starve, we will share our food with others. We want our youths to conquer the world. They are our pride.

We love our country and we will not allow anyone to divide it.

Someone’s surname cannot become their identity.

We believe in the ideology of Swami Vivekananda, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Netaji. We believe in the philosophy of Rabindranath and Nazrul. We believe in unity and harmony.

Does anyone ever ask whether Gandhiji was Gujarati or Bengali? No. Gandhiji was Gandhiji. Someone who takes everyone along can become the leader of the nation.

This country is our pride. Bangla’s soil is the purest. Where else can you find soil enriched with such purity? This soil taught us the meaning of freedom. This soil taught us about the renaissance. We must maintain the dignity of this land.

Let the new generation come forward. Even Swami Vivekananda used to say that playing football is an easier way to reach God instead of reading the Gita. Sports promote an environment of harmony and culture.

The Indian Cricket team has seen the captaincy of Md Azharuddin as well as Sourav Ganguly. Have we ever questioned whether they are Bengali or Hindu or Muslim? We work together in harmony.

Those who are the citizens of this country cannot be called foreigners. We are all citizens of this country. We vote; we all hold bank accounts. If one cannot provide their birth certificate of their parents, are they not citizens of the country? This is what is happening in the country. New agendas are being chalked up to discriminate against the people.

To become a citizen (as per the new Bill), one must be considered as a foreigner for the first six years; only then can one receive citizenship. This is the provision. These are election tactics, don’t believe them. Till the time we are alive we cannot be intimidated with such tactics.

If something happens to one person, another will stand up for him/her. People’s court is the highest court. Let everyone live in peace.

Reaction to BJP President’s speech in Malda

The Chief National Spokesperson of the party, Derek O’Brien today issued a statement, reacting to the BJP President’s speech in Malda:

“After listening to the BJP president’s speech in Malda, it is obvious that they are very nervous. They know their days are numbered. They are politically scared.

Their speeches are low on facts and poor in taste. They don’t understand the ethos of India. They don’t understand the ethos of Bengal. They are heading towards a big zero.

Some are saying they are desperate. Some are saying they have gone mad. Or is it a combination of both?”

Jangalmahal tourism circuit is thriving, thanks to Mamata Banerjee’s policies

The situation in Jangalmahal now is a far cry from what it was during the Left Front rule. As a result of the policies of the Trinamool Congress Government, there is peace. One of the primary ways in which Jangalmahal has renewed itself is through the promotion of tourism.

Hundreds of tourists now visit the popular sites as well as the unexplored locales in Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram districts.

Promoting the Jangalmahal tourism circuit, which includes areas of Jhargram, Paschim Medinipur, Bankura and Purulia, the State Government is not only putting up infrastructural facilities like cable cars, heritage hotels and lodges, but also inviting private investments to be a part of the endeavour.

The West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC) has started overnight packages where tourists are taken around unexplored areas of Jhargram district like Belpahari, Banspahari, Kankrajhor, Laljal and others.

The WBTDC is also promoting trekking and other adventure tourism in Kankrajhor.

The Forest Department has taken an initiative to set up one hundred homestays in Jhargram. The forest-dominated district of Jhargram has a lot of potential in tourism and homestays are a major enabler towards fulfilling that potential.

In Paschim Medinipur, the government has given focus on three places – Karambera Fort in Gaganeshwar village in Keshiary block, Karnagarh in Salboni block and Gongoni in Garhbeta block.

Karambera Fort shows signs of the architecture of ancient Odisha as well as of the Mughal period. Karnagarh is well-known for the remnants of a huge stone fort. Karna from the Mahabharata once supposedly ruled this place, and hence the name.

Gongoni is famous for its natural river canyon – a fascinating wide gorge of red soil on the banks of the River Silabati. The canyon is locally known as Gongoni Danga or Gongoni Khola.

New attraction: Archaeological museum on Sagar Island

An innovative Mythological Museum has been set up on Sagar Island, at the site where the famous Gangasagar Mela is held. This is the government’s latest gift to the countless pilgrims and tourists who visit the fair every winter. This year the fair scheduled to be held in February.

It has cost Rs 72 lakh to construct the museum – Rs 45 lakh for the museum itself and Rs 27 lakh for the fencing. The museum is located at the mid-point between the sea cost where the devotees take the dip and the Kapil Muni Temple, which they visit after the holy bath.

There is a big statue of Lord Shiva at the entrance. There is a fountain inside the premises. Inside the museum, there are artefacts related to the puranic stories centred on Gangasagar.

This museum would ensure that people visit Sagar Island all through the year, and thus make it a much more popular tourist spot.

Security measures at Gangasagar Mela – drones, CCTV, GPS-fitted vessels

A slew of measures have been taken by the State Government this year for the security and convenience of the lakhs of pilgrims who will be attending the Gangasagar Mela to take the holy dip.

Among the security measures are 12 drones, 700 closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras, LED television screens and GPS-fitted vessels. And to keep track of all these would be a control room, located at the site of the fair, and another at the State secretariat, Nabanna. Security personnel have been provided with 12 satellite mobile phones.

Metal barricades totalling 220km have constructed along the route to Sagar Island, and in front of the Kapil Muni Temple, where the devotees congregate after taking the holy dip.

Then, there will be 40 battery-run vehicles for picking up garbage for the duration of the fair. The temporary residential structures set up on the island have been painted with fire-retardant material.
