World’s first mangrove zoo to come up in Sunderbans: WB CM at Jharkhali

West Bengal Chief Minister, Ms Mamata Banerjee today started her three day visit to Sunderbans. The trip is intended to boast tourism and improve infrastructure in Sunderban areas. She inaugurated a slew of projects at Kultali.

The major highlight of the event was inauguration of the 725 m long Mridanga Setu, which will connect Sunderbans with the mainland. This bridge will connect Mathurapur and Patharpratima.

She also inaugurated the 132 kv Shirakole power substation which will serve vast areas of Dakshin 24 Parganas. Annex building of Dr B R Ambedkar College was also inaugurated.

She then went to Jharkhali. She laid the foundation stone for an eco resort, which will be built in PPP mode with the help of Techno India group. She inaugurated a Tiger Rescue Centre (Byaghro Sundari) at Jharkhali.

New projects for roads, centres for agricultural development, new health facilities and a host of projects were inaugurated.

Highlights of her speech at Kultali:

  • I am working for the all-round development of Dakshin 24 parganas.
  • We have started a university for women at Diamond Harbour. We are setting up a medical college.
  • We are setting up multi super speciality hospitals, fair price medicine shops.
  • We have started Kanyashree, Sikhhashree schemes to encourage children to pursue education.
  • We have started pension schemes for folk-artists.
  • We will give Rs 25000 to unmarried girls at the age of 18 to pursue higher education. Girls are our assets.

Highlights of her speech at Jharkhali:

  • We are launching a Rs 400 crore project at Jharkhali.
  • We are allotting Rs 90 crore for building roads and bridges in Jharkhali area.
  • We have built new roads in Basanti block. Apart from that we have built several roads and bridges here.
  • Like Digha and Sagar Islands, we will build a gateway to Sunderbans also.
  • Our motto is “Aranyer Sathe, Prokritir Pothe”.
  • We want to conserve the endangered flora and fauna of the Sunderbans region.
  • We are also developing eco-tourism parks and resorts. We want to conserve the endangered flora and fauna of the Sunderbans region.
  • We are allotting Rs 25 crore for setting up world’s first mangrove zoo. Land has already been identified.
  • We have inaugurated a Tiger Rescue Centre at Jharkhali. I have named it Byaghro Sundari (Beautiful Tigress).
  • The industrialists who are accompanying me here today will invest in boosting tourism in Sunderbans.
