WB govt taking proactive steps to stop crib-deaths in the state

All Government Hospitals will now have a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU). The State Health Department has already set up SNCUs and SNSUs in all major State Hospitals as promised by the West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee. The next step is to set these emergency critical care units for the patients aged between 1 year and 18 years which is termed as PICU. Decisions have been made that such units will be in place in all state run medical college hospitals and district general hospitals within the next year. The Task Force of the Health Department has been taking advises and suggestions from the leading child-health institutes of the country in this regard.
Out of the 13 state-run medical colleges and hospitals and other such hospitals, PICU is present in 7 places – SSKM, NRS, Chittranjan Sishusadan, BC Roy, and Bardhaman, Maldah and Uttarbanga Medical College and Hospital.
The Health Dept. is also starting a 1-year fellowship course to increase the expertise of pediatricians. Those who have done MD in pediatrics are eligible for the fellowship.
