WB CM urges Centre to take immediate steps for the sick tea gardens
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee urged the Centre to take immediate steps to pay wages to the workers of seven tea gardens owned by the Duncans group that it had decided to take over in January. She also announced that the State Government would take over six other closed tea gardens and put them up for auction. She said the State Government would soon formulate a policy for this.
Blaming the Centre for the worsening condition in the Duncans’ tea gardens, she said the workers there were now in a “peculiar condition” because in spite of the Centre asking the Tea Board to take them over, the workers there continue to be deprived of everything. “The state government is providing them rice and electricity and looking after their health,” Mamata Banerjee said.
The CM held an administrative meeting at Subasani tea garden in Alipurduar district during the day. “The Centre’s decision to take over seven of the Duncans’ 14 tea gardens in the Dooars in Alipurduar district has only increased the workers’ suffering,” she said.

কেন্দ্রীয় সরকারকে বন্ধ চা বাগানগুলি খোলার অনুরোধ জানাবেন মুখ্যমন্ত্রী মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। ডানকানের বন্ধ হওয়া সাতটি চা বাগান খুলে দেওয়ার আশ্বাস দেওয়া হয়েছিল ভোটের আগে৷ সেগুলি খুলে দেওয়ার অনুরোধ জানানো হবে। তিনি আরও জানান ৬টি বন্ধ চা বাগান অধিগ্রহণ করে নিলামের পরিকল্পনা নিয়েছে রাজ্য সরকার। চা বাগানের সমস্যা দেখার জন্য মুখ্যমন্ত্রী এদিন ডিরেক্টরেট গঠন করে দেন৷
ডানকানের বন্ধ হওয়া চা বাগানগুলির খারাপ অবস্থার জন্য কেন্দ্রকে দায়ী করে তিনি বলেন যে ‘চা শ্রমিকরা এখন এক অদ্ভুত পরিস্থিতিতে রয়েছেন’। মুখ্যমন্ত্রী বলেন, ‘রাজ্য সরকার এইসব চা শ্রমিকদের চাল ও বিদ্যুৎ সরবরাহ করছে এবং তাদের দেখাশোনা করছে’।
গতকাল আলিপুরদুয়ার জেলায় একটি প্রশাসনিক বৈঠক করেন মমতা বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়। তিনি বলেন কেন্দ্র শুধু ডানকানের বন্ধ হওয়া সাতটি চা বাগান অধিগ্রহণের আশ্বাস দিয়েছে কিন্তু আলিপুরদুয়ার জেলার ডুয়ার্সের ১৪টি চা বাগানের শ্রমিকরা এখনও ভুক্তভোগী।
