Trinamool Congress to continue support to UPA, stand on presidential candidature remains unchanged

Kolkata: Trinamool Congress Chairperson and West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee on Monday evening convened a meeting consisting of all the party Member of Parliaments and Member of Legislative Assembly at the Town Hall. Various issues were discussed in the meeting including the partys stand on alliance with the UPA and presidential candidature.

Speaking Trinamool Congress leader while briefing the PRESS said there are no intentions to bring down the government as the party feels that there might be differences of opinions between the two but the question to come out of the alliance dose not arise. Trinamool is a partner in the ruling coalition, UPA. We are the second largest party. We are staying there. If the government doesn't want us, we will have no hesitation in submitting our resignation, but we have not quit,” he said.

Trinamool Congress Chairperson in her post on her official page in social-networking-site http://www.facebook.com/MamataBanerjeeOfficialreiterated her stand on presidential candidature Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

` Kalam Saheb, you have touched our hearts and our spirit.

I have seen your statement that you are not contesting. This news has hurt all of us deeply.

You were a People's President and bridged the gap between high office and common people. After waiting for 3-4 painful days, some political parties simply failed the people at this critical moment in responding to the clarion call given by so many common citizens of our nation to stand up for a man of impeccable integrity, highest moral character and an inspiration for the young generation of this country.

In these trying and difficult times, public trust in the political class and institutions is under serious stress. There is a lack of faith of the common people in political entities who partake in rampant corruption and underhand dealings. Some self-seeking politicians have discarded all ethics and thereby have alienated themselves from the people.

I have unshakeable belief in the indomitable will of the people of my country. They will rise to cleanse Indian politics and bring back honesty, values and ethics.

Again, I would like to thank from the bottom of my heart, all my brothers and sisters, for your spontaneous and positive response for the great cause of our nation`.

We had proposed the name of Dr. Kalam for the presidential candidature and Trinamool Congress will stand by its decision, however, taking the letter written by him into consideration we will accept his stand`.Dr. Kalam sent a press release stating that he expresses his sincere gratitude to Trinamool Congress Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee for her support but he was not willing to contest the presidential elections.
