Scottish delegates interested in investing in tidal energy in Bengal
After participating in the Bengal Global Business Summit, a delegation from the University of Edinburgh met the State Power Minister to discuss tidal energy projects in Bengal. Present at the meeting too was a representative from Cardiff University.
Tidal energy or tidal power is a form of hydropower that converts the energy obtained from tides into useful forms of power, mainly electricity. Being a renewable form of energy, like solar and wind, the generation and use of tidal power are non-polluting activities.
The delegation is going to conduct a feasibility study in the Sundarbans and after that, enable investment in a pilot project for the generation of tidal energy. According to the Power Minister, this is likely to lead to the setting up of small units with a capacity of 50 KW each.
According to the professor leading the delegation, developed countries are increasingly generating tidal energy and that Bengal too has a high potential in this field.
The minister told the delegation that the State Government has given a huge emphasis on the development of renewable energy. As a part of that, many initiatives have been taken by the Power Department. Solar energy is being produced in the state on a large scale.
সুন্দরবনে টাইডাল এনার্জি প্রকল্প গড়তে আগ্রহী স্কটিশ সংস্থা
চতুর্থ বিশ্ব বঙ্গ বাণিজ্য সম্মেলনে যোগ দিতে এসে সুন্দরবনে টাইডাল এনার্জি প্রকল্প গড়তে আগ্রহ প্রকাশ করল এক স্কটিশ সংস্থা। বাণিজ্য সম্মেলনের শেষে বিদ্যুৎ ভবনে মন্ত্রীর সঙ্গে বৈঠক করতে আসেন স্কটল্যান্ডের এডিনবরা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রতিনিধিরা। সঙ্গে ছিলেন কার্ডিফ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় প্রতিনিধিও। মোট ১০ সদস্যের প্রতিনিধি দল এখানে আসেন। বৈঠকে টাইডাল এনার্জি সংক্রান্ত একটি প্রেজেন্টেশনও দেখানো হয় প্রতিনিধিদের।
টাইডাল এনার্জি বিষয়টি তুলে ধরেন এডিনবরা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অধ্যাপক এ আর ওয়ারলেস। তিনি বলেন, উন্নত সমুদ্রতটবর্তী দেশগুলিতে টাইডাল এনার্জির ব্যবহার হচ্ছে সাফল্যের সঙ্গে। পশ্চিমবঙ্গেও এই সুযোগ রয়েছে। সুন্দরবনের ঢেউয়ের স্রোতকে ব্যবহার করেই শক্তি উৎপাদন করা যাবে। রাজ্য সরকার এ ব্যপারে আগ্রহী হলে স্কটিশ সংস্থাটি বাংলায় একটি পাইলট প্রকল্প করতে আগ্রহী।
স্কটিশ অধ্যাপক ওয়ালেসের দাবি, এই প্রকল্প কার্যকর হলে, নতুন বিকল্প বিদ্যুতের সম্ভাবনার দিক খুলে যাবে।
