Handicrafts hub coming up in north Bengal

Handicrafts hub coming up in north Bengal

The Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Council is taking a unique step to set up a ‘hut’ for local artisans and craftsmen who specialize in handicrafts. A handicrafts hub, to be set up at Kawakhali, will exclusively display and promote the works of the village craftsmen.

The State Small & Medium Scale Industries Department will assist the Siliguri-Jalpaiguri Development Council in this regard.

Recently, the West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee had inaugurated an outlet of the Biswa Bangla chain of stores at Bagdogra Airport.

The government-run chain of stores is the brainchild of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms Mamata Banerjee and has been set up by the Micro and Small-scale Enterprises and Textiles Department to showcase all handicrafts, handloom and other traditional and famous products of the State.

For the first time, all exclusive products of Bengal, from sweets to muslin saris, have been made available under one umbrella. The marketing strategy is different from the familiar Manjusha or Tantuja stores.

Incidentally, the Rural Craft Hub of Bengal, which is run by the Micro Small & Medium Enterprises & Textiles Department of the State, has received the rare honour of being selected by UNESCO Headquarters to showcase their artistes in Paris on 28th July, 2015.
