Dokra artefacts to be gifted to players, delegates on final day of Under-17 World cup
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been very active in promoting the traditional arts and crafts of Bengal. In the latest effort, dokra artefacts made by artisans from a village in Purba Bardhaman district are going to be showcased to the world.
The plan is to gift a dokra artefact each – depicting a robust Santhal youth playing the instrument of madal – to players and delegates from across the world on the day of the FIFA under-17 World Cup final at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan (VYBK). Thus, footballers and FIFA officials from across the world would become the brand ambassadors of this ancient craft.
A group of dokra creators from Dariapur village in Ausgram-I block in Purba Bardhaman district – consisting of 130 artisans from 42 families – have made the gifts. The Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Department has been directing the efforts in this regard.
Dokra is a non-ferrous metal casting using the primitive was casting using the primitive was casting process, which was invented by Indian artisans about 4,000 years ago.

বর্ধমান জেলার ডোকরা শিল্পীরা তাদের প্রতিভা বিশ্বের সামনে তুলে ধরার সুযোগ পেলেন অনূর্ধ্ব ১৭ বিশ্বকাপ প্রতিযোগিতার সুবাদে।
কলকাতার বিবেকানন্দ যুবভারতী ক্রীড়াঙ্গনে অনুষ্ঠিত হতে চলা ফাইনাল ম্যাচে সারা পৃথিবীর প্রতিনিধিদের হাতে তুলে দেওয়া হবে ডোকরার তৈরী একটি করে মূর্তি। পূর্ব বর্ধমান জেলার দরাইপুর গ্রাম ডোকরা শিল্পের জন্য বিখ্যাত। বর্তমানে সেখানকার ৪২টি পরিবারের ১৩০জন শিল্পী এই মূর্তিগুলি তৈরী করেছেন।
এই দরাইপুর গ্রাম দশকের পর দশক ধরে অগনিত মূর্তি রপ্তানি করে চলেছে বিশ্বজুড়ে। দরাইপুর গ্রামের ৫ জন শিল্পী রাষ্ট্রপতি পুরস্কার পান তাদের শৈল্পিক কারুকার্যের জন্য। গত তিন বছর ধরে একটি স্বেচ্ছাসেবী সংস্থার সহযোগিতায় রাজ্য সরকার এই শিল্পীদের সাহায্যার্থে আয়োজন করেছে ‘ডোকরা মেলা’র।
২০১৩ সালে রাজ্য সরকার ডোকরা শিল্পীদের উন্নয়নের স্বার্থে ইউনেস্কো’র সঙ্গে একটি মৌ স্বাক্ষর করে।
