Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee urges the medical fraternity to be more humane, work in rural areas

AITMC Web News, February 3, Kolkata: “I will not tolerate any reluctance among the fresh doctors to serve in the villages as I feel its not only their duty but also responsibility  towards their profession as it one of the noble profession and a patient treats a doctor no less than their savior. I want all the doctors to stay in a village or district for the initial three-years, I assure them they will not be a part of the district cadre but will be inducted in the state cadre once they complete the three-year-period`, were the words of West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee who was speaking at the felicitation programme at Swastha Bhawan.

The Chief Minister requested the doctors and nurses to be more humane as people in general look look upto them with faith and trust. “I was recently in Gosaba and I was told that the health center there lacks doctor and staff. Only one doctor is there who too is too rude. I want you all to be more humane”, she added. However, the Chief Minister said that those who will serve in the villages will be inducted once the phase was over and by that time the next lot of doctors and nurses will be ready to serve in the villages. Ms. Banerjee also reiterated her stand on the issue and said, “I will ask the concerned department to implement from next academic year as I am committed to development and health is most important issue. However, I will further say that those willing to stay in villages should be ready to accept any posting as we will not take their permission allotting village postings. I will not accept any reluctance in this matter”.

“I want those doctors who can and are already in large numbers serving in any particular hospital or nursing home to take charge of the small health centers as your services are required and I will be happy if you realize your responsibilities and come forward. There are so many small hospitals which lack good health care, why can’t you make it a point to visit them as patients who cannot afford your services will be happy to see your presence and believe me they will bless”, said Ms. Banerjee. She said that there are no places where the poor patients can get their blood and other pathological tests done in the villages forget about ECG or other bigger tests. “I want that the state should have good diagnostic center in all the rural district and the health centers must improve and upgrade”, said the Chief Minister who reiterated her conviction to make the health sector better and for that matter she will not hesitate to introduce the Public-Private Partnership model.
