Chief Minister doubles allowance to Singur landlosers, increase from 1,000 to 2,000 rupees

`There will be an increase in the monthly allowance to Singur landlosers, including farmers, bargadars and land labourers from Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000, till they get possession of the land that was forcibly acquired from them. They will also get rice at subsidized rate of two rupees`, said West Bengal Chief Minister Ms. Mamata Banerjee at the Writers` Building.
This is an initiative to provide landlosers, including farmers, bargadars and land labourers with some respite from the financial crunch they are already facing and 1000 rupees was too meager an amount. Realizing this issue Chief Minister on Wednesday doubled the monthly allowance and now the amount will be 2000 rupees instead of 1000 rupees.
Speaking on this occasion Ms. Banerjee said, `We had earlier announced that the allowance would be Rs 1,000 per month. But due to price rise, we have decided to make it Rs 2,000 till they officially get back their land. According to statistics there are nearly 2,940 unwilling farmers officially, and 50 recorded bargadars. The number of unrecorded bargadars is over 200 and land labourers 1200. This takes the total number of beneficiaries to over 4,000, who are likely to claim this monthly allowance.
The revised allowances will be implemented from July onwards.
