Bengal Govt promoting strawberry production
The initiative may be a bit different, but it has certainly borne fruit! Farmers are smiling at the prospects of profitability from the trial run of strawberry farming undertaken by the Bengal Government’s Agriculture Department, and are looking forward to this alternative crop.
The field with small green plants, some with ripe red berries and some with ripening ones, seems to be a location in the hills. But no, this field basking in the golden sunlight is in Bagnan in Howrah district! The experiment has been carried out by the Agriculture section of Gopalpur Block I office, and the results have indicated profits for the farmers. About 5,000 strawberries can be produced from one bigha of land.
At first, farmers were sceptical over whether the climate and conditions in South Bengal would suit strawberry cultivation. But those worries have been set at rest with the outcome of the initiative. They can now feel confident about going ahead with growing this sought-after and delicious berry.

হোক না একটু আলাদা। কিন্তু ফল মিলেছে ভালই। নতুন চাষে তাই চওড়া হয়েছে হাসি। রাজ্য সরকারের কৃষি দফতরের উদ্যোগে পরীক্ষামূলকভাবে স্ট্রবেরি চাষে লাভের মুখ দেখলেন চাষিরা। আগামী দিনেও তাঁরা এগোতে চাইছেন বিকল্প চাষে।
মাটির উপর ছোট ছোট সবুজ গাছ। কোনওটায় লাল টুকটুকে পাকা । কোনওটায় আবার কাঁচা। থোকা থোকা ফলে আছে স্ট্রবেরি। না, পাহাড়ি কোনও এলাকা নয়। সোনালি রোদ ছড়ানো এই জমি হাওড়ার বাগনানের।
এক নম্বর ব্লকের গোপালপুরে কৃষি দফতরের উদ্যোগে পরীক্ষামূলকভাবে করা হয় স্ট্রবেরি চাষ। আর তাতে কয়েকদিনের মধ্যেই লাভের মুখ দেখেছেন চাষিরা। এক বিঘা জমিতে প্রায় পাঁচ হাজারের মত স্ট্রবেরি চাষ করা যায়।
দক্ষিণবঙ্গের জমি আর আবহাওয়া। স্ট্রবেরি চাষ নিয়ে প্রথমদিকে একটু হলেও চিন্তায় ছিলেন চাষিরা। সেই চিন্তা ঘুচেছে। সোনালি রোদ গায়ে মেখে এগিয়ে চলেছেন চাষিরা। তাঁদের হাতেই এগিয়ে চলছে সাধের স্ট্রবেরি চাষ।
